I have had one for 6 years now and I can attest to everything you have described in this video. They are aggressive, love high random flow and a very picky eaters at the beginning. Now it is the dominant tang in my aquarium. Lots of variety in foods helps with disease control and maintaining weight with a highly active species like the Achilles Tangs

A lot of this video is spot on. Especially cleaner shrimp being a good choice in tank mates. In my experience however the Achilles tang is no more aggressive than other tangs. My Achilles is 3 years old and doing great, furthermore he has never had an issue eating frozen food, live food, or nori. It is a terrific member of our family and many of our guests comment on it. When he had ich initially he recovered on his own with the cleaner shrimp and lots of good food, has not shown any ich now in years.

Prestige Reef yes he did have white spot and tang disease(black ick, idk if it’s called the same thing in the UK). I QTed him but probably not long enough so right now everyone is in QT while I’m in the middle of my 125 build. I FW dipped everyone and they are going through hyposalinity and I plan to do praziquantel for the black ick, maybe an additional copper treatment after hyposalinity to be extra sure because I want to keep the new tank really clean of parasites too.

I had this fish alive for many years, than i moved to other country and gave it up to the store. In my opinion, it needs gracilaria parvispora red algae. I also fed him with mysis and pellets, but this algae was his best food. Once i ve been to Maui and spoke with a guy in a fish store, he told me, they feed them with almost only this algae. So, i tried to find it on live rock in a store and reproduced it in my algae refugium. It got bigger and had no problems with cheto. The fish never had white spots. I also had a 36w UV running on a different eheim pump, and a 55w UV on bypass from the main return pump into the algae ref.

Question(s): First of all.. god damn you’re brave and that’s an awesome tank... bloody huge! I’m new to reefing and just came across this channel today. Anyway ... a few questions for ya.. 1. I currently run GFO, Carbon, filter floss, a protein skimmer, etc in my 3.5 month old tank and I’m having an issue with sand particles floating around. They’re definitely sand and not bubbles. Any suggestions on getting rid of them? I’ve tried many many many things... - Change in flow (Return pump) - Position of powerheads - Turning on/off power heads over time - Dosing calcium carbonate - Dosing Clarity by Seachem - Water changes and syphoning the sand bed And more. Nothing has worked :( 2. What in the world do you do for a career? Mind me asking.. I’m trying to find a career path myself and I’m having a horrible time trying to find what I want to do I’ve also got so, suggestions: - You should do a reef general tips video unless you’ve done one already :D - You should definitely also reach out to companies about sponsors if you’ve not done that too Sorry I’m typing this late at night and I’ve had a really rough couple of days here so I may seem like I’m a 15 year old kid typing all this. Otherwise, amazing quality vids! I like how you bring in video content then go back and forth to you talking. Keeps the video more interesting and less boring. Also keeping the video content relevant too is crucial which you see to do great at! The underwater shots (by the looks) are also stunning. Great stuff! Can’t believe I found such a amazing channel. Very under rated!
@PrestigeReef

Hi SuperVIP 1.Are you sure its sand and not precipitation clouding the water, this is usually caused by an imbalance of Calcium, KH and Mag. Sand usually settles or is filtered out reasonably quickly. Have you got anything stirring it up? 2. Its very unexciting but I work in an office, this channel is a hobby rather than a job. Thank you for the suggestions :)

Those white spot are irritate skin by Ich parasite when they drop off. Ich burrows in the skin and feeds on the fish. There are three stages of the life cycle. Copper, tank top tank transfer method and hyposalinity are options to break the cycle. These should be addressed at the quarantine process. Maybe you know this but no info was giving in the video of it.

I had a beautiful Achilles tang (and 90 gallon bow front) that was alive and well for well over a year and a half UNTIL I got divorced and kicked out of my house and they wouldn’t let me in to take care of my reef tank. Don't forget they are also very susceptible to many viruses and bacterial infections. Hence why back when I used to have one I would constantly feed it garlic and selcon. Sadly however I listened to wrong people on forums and this lead to him dying.

When i added my Powder Brown , he got very stressed a few times and at one point he was covered in white spots.... I didn't noticed any other fish being affected so i just let him be and made sure he was eating good (not saying that that was the best option ). But is been almost 2 years and he is doing great. Sadly i have tried to introduce a Powder Blue ( would be a awesome combo) but my P Brown will not let it happen.

I heard that cleaner wrasse will harass tank mates if there is not enough fishes for them to clean. I aim to have an achilles tang one day (though I also dream of having a tank that goes from floor to ceiling). Heard that UV might be a good investment when having such tangs (hopefully better alternative for cleaner wrasse).

UV does nothing, cleaner wrasse and shrimp also do nothing for ick. Ick in certain stages buries under the skin/gills where either a wrasse or shrimp is going to be able to get it off.

Great video bud. Top of my wishlist but not with current tangs. It would die. My Clown tang is probably my shyest and my vampire tang is the most meanest. Funny how individual fish really are, keep up the great work ✌️️👍

How have you managed white spot in your reef?? I had a 6x2x2 mixed reef and after 8 years running I unknowingly introduced a rampant strain of WS on a blue throat trigger and battled spot for 3 months leaving the tank fallow of fish for 9wks. After Quarantining everything there after it broke out again killing everything except the trigger some 8 months later.. I killed off the live rock and left it sun baked then dry for a year now with no current marines at all. I feel scared to reuse the now dead base rock but feel its too valuable to disregard. You opinions please.. congrats on your reef its amazing matey.

If the rock has been out of the tank for a year it should be fine, I left my tank fallow once for 12 weeks which appeared to have worked. Something you have to think about is if anything is stressing the fish, correct food, water quality, etc...my powder blue gets the occasional few white spots but it never develops into anything significant.

Prestige Reef I see where your coming from.. my tank was all good for 8 years with the occasional light breakout as you explain but I think the trigger was carrying a potent strain, all parameters were good. The only stress was like you 5 tang and the occasional tail slapping but that's all. Im glad you think the rock will be ok.. any suggestions on maturing it! ?? Add new live rock ?? Artificial bacteria ? Recent discussion see to say that Acros don't flourish without live rock starts. Thanx for your reply and advice. HAPPY REEFING! Great channel .

I've never used an artificial bacterial before and I don't like to comment on things I haven't tried, I have always started my systems with live rock but its from tanks have been running a while and don't have any of the negative downsides to live rock, such as pest

I have a 180 gallon tank with a Red Sea sailfin tang, male/female square back, blue jaw trigger, orange shoulder tang, and hippo tang. I Also have a few dwarf angels. Are these tank mates okay for an Achilles tang?

Step 1, make sure you have a tank that is at least 180 gallons and 6 feet long. Step 2, quarantine your new healthy fish... So, how big is your QT tank?

But that's the same with every tang really aswell, there all mainly aggressive and prone to whitespot! So it's not just this Pacific tang it's MOST tangs

That is very true but some are often far worse than others. For example in 8 years my scopes has never had whitespot but my powder blue gets it intermittently

For one you have a huge bio load in that aquarium so yes keeping these fish is gonna be hard not that I am complaining your tank is nice but I am going nowhere near that in mine when I set it up. The more fish the more issues and the more expensive equipment you need! depends what you want to do I'm gonna run 63 gallon with three fish maybe four I want to work less as I have other freshwater tanks to take care of.

Would love to know others' opinions... Currently setting up a 125 g 6 ft mega-flow and was wanting to get this fish. The system will have over-sizeable protein skimmer, refugium, etc. (there's a lot of filtration!) I also planned on making a significant amount of water flow (ranging between 9x and 20x gph, relative to tank volume), while also only having a ridge of live rock across the middle to allow for a lot of horizontal swim room. I have kept "expert fish" with success and know at times living conditions are circumstantial. Essentially I'm asking if anyone strongly advises against getting this fish simply due to the size of the tank (125 g, 6ft), assuming the other "picky" aspects of its' living conditions are met. Thanks!

Great video, although I think the comments around white spot aren't quite correct. You say that white spot is virtually unavoidable. It's not. Correct quarantine of all fish before introduction to a tank will guarantee a white spot free tank. R Also cleaner shrimp don't do anything for white spot.

It’s not actual electricity per se, but a form of bioluminescence produced by the scallop. If you’re interested, google “electric flame scallop”.
