Do you remember the dreaded rural purge? The year that CBS cancelled every TV show with a tree in it? Shows like Mayberry RFD and The Beverly Hillbillies were victims of the purge. Here's my take on one of the most controversial moves in television history.

@Daniel Appleton yes... Archie did quite well, telling stories for 50 years without swearing, (in the 1970's it was printed by Christian Comics, and often mentioned Christ). I miss the shows like LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE and HAPPY DAYS, that covered adult themes, but could be watched by the whole family. Those days are over. I grew up in the '70's and all of the popular shows, (Disney, Little House, Waltons, Dukes), were all rural throw-backs. Even Happy Days, Laverne, and Eight is Enough celebrated rural values, (Not to mention McCloud). Maybe CBS gave up on rural shows, but America didn't...

disney fan81 I used to love watching The Dukes of Hazzard. The TV show, not the tackied up movie they made with a whole different cast. @@jdsundstrom Excellent Video.. I fully agree with your analysis on looking back in the summer of 1971 that a handful of "rural-based" comedies and variety shows i.e Hillbillies, etc. could have stayed on the air for a little while longer. With that said, it was a huge gamble that then CBS Boss Fred Silverman and his staff did in going fully in with showing these then ground breaking sit-coms and dramas such as Archie Bunker, the Jeffersons, Maude, M*A*S* H, etc. 1971 is a landmark year in history of American Entertainment, as the first era of TV programming going back little over 20 years, aka the so called "Golden Era" was coming to a grinding halt. With that said, if you could tweak this video Dave, you forget to add in one other big factor on the cause of the so called "Rural Purge." That is that the rural-comedies did not reflect the other population of America i.e No Black/Afro-Americans, Latino and Asians were even regular cast members on these shows. PS Dave. Just an idea you don't have to do it, but what about doing a video segment on the year 2000 and the start of the reality TV era. 2000 is just an important historic year in TV history as say 1971 was in this case. Thanks.

I feel the Rural Purge was the moment worldly cynicism conquered innocent escapism. There was no good reason to cancel popular programs except to purposely embrace a more edgy and dour aesthetic. I agree with you that the two could have coexisted at least for a time. Sometimes we want something comforting we don't have to over-think, something that reminds us that there's naivete and sweetness in the world as well as harsh reality. I feel that television went out of of balance because of this decision and took its first steps towards the dark and heavy entertainment that dominates our screens today.

@@donnicholas7552Looking back I agree with the Narrator (I think his name is Dave)that TV needed to adapt. However. CBS could have kept a couple of the "rural" shows while at the same time gradually add in "All in the Family" etc as well during this transition period. Honestly in 1971, too bad Cable TV did not exist on a wide scale then. The best solution since Cable TV was not around yet, was that a 4th major Network in America should been created. That 4th Network either could have continued to show these "rural" shows. Or start brand new with shows in the "Archie Bunker" programming format. There was room for both forms of entertainment.

David Ellis I’ve noticed a pattern that almost every decade sitcoms shift themes and focus. Early to mid 50s a lot of “televised vaudeville” lots of song and dancing in front of a live audience Mid 50s into the 60s came the filmed sitcom Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best and Andy Griffith the era of escapism. Late 60s into late 70s the era of social issues All in the Family, Sanford and Son and MASH etc early 80s until about 1992 was more of a throwback to the escapism of the 50s-60s with upperclass families in their two story suburban house. What ever issues they face always works out in the end, whatever problems are always solved with hug. Early 90s to early 2000s it was the young, single adult 20 somethings living in the city Mad About You, Martin, Living Single and Friends type shows.

Seed_drill Sadly, too many young people had to move away from rural areas, and home and family, to get a decent job. Then they become "city fellers", even though they have rural roots. That's the cost of doing business profitably now. You have to be in the middle of everything, where your product can be shipped out, and more inventory can be gotten in efficiently. American companies are either sold to foreign corporations, or are just slaves to profit, existing only to keep the CEOs pocket lined, and the shareholders happy. Not a thought is given to hometown people who gave decades in loyal service, or the pride in keeping jobs in America. It's all about the $$$. That's the loss of the American dream.

Dave Sundstrom The Rural Purge may have been a case of cold- blooded cowardice on the part of CBS, but in 1979, there was no amount of urban sophistication that could stop two good ol' boys and the orange '69 Charger. As a matter of fact, most city folk wouldn't know how to handle all that horsepower. The Dukes Of Hazzard was the first salvo in the Rural Revenge that gave us Evening Shade, Matlock, and In The Heat Of The Night. And after the turn of the millennium, cable and satellite TV gave us Swamp People and Duck Dynasty from my Louisiana. No amount of urban sophistication can match the old fashioned American values.

@@jdsundstrom Then again, the ratings on PJ suffered for some time due to the continued absence of matriarch Kate Bradley (played by Bea Benaderet). It was the beginning of the end for PJ when, after Benaderet's death from lung cancer, Dr. Janet Craig (played by June Lockhart, fresh from her stint on Lost In Space) assumed the matriarch role, although the character was not related to the Bradley girls or Joe Carson.

Nicely done. I enjoy your videos. A number of your stories, I heard my dad say over the years. My dad Camp Russell worked at Universal Studios during the fifties thru the 70’s as a still photographer. He was surprised too since a number of the shows were finically successful. His take was the tv studio execs were pivoting from the soft-take of 50’s sitcoms, The escapism of the 60’s Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction (also in this fun genre in my view is: I Dream if Jeannie, My Favorite Martian, etc.) and in the 70’s start catering to a more urban audience that wanted the grit of defective shows, (remember we were lousy with detective shows in the 70’s) then medical themes with a ‘smart’ dialogue and story lines, conditions, medical terms and medicines that resonated with the public. The strategy had some merit. But as you point out, why couldn’t these two genres co-exist on TV? It was a departure for sure. Bold to some and silly to others. Really enjoy your videos. Thank you and keep up your good work.

I have a love hate relationship with CBS as they canceled Gilligan's Island and Lost in Space (both shows were told they would have a 4th season) and would go on to cancel Logan's Run after changing its schedule. The Rural Purge of 1970-71 ended the so called feel good shows of the 60's. Strangely enough, the networks would do the same thing again a decade later when in 1981, they would cancel a bevy of shows that started in the 70's such as Charlie's Angels, Buck Rogers, Eight is Enough, Soap, and The Waltons.

I could go on. But then I've given up on tv except for news. I like local news for being local, Fox for laughs at their hilarious Trumpism and CNN for their relentless sanctimony. When my group house changed cable packages, I said "great, the History Channel", only to find pawn shops, swamp people, knife making and target practice littering that neighborhood. What a letdown, with so much history out there to be mined. "America's business IS business" has gotten truer every minute. Was it the advent of mass media that really started the snowball rolling? Newspapers, movies, radio, television, internet "with progress and regress for all". And now we have influencers and likes for all the idiots out there. Whew!

The rural purge was short-sighted. The rural aspects of those shows was only the motif. The deeper meaning of some (or all) of those shows was profound and timeless. Take the Beverly Hillbillies for example. The Beverly Hillbillies was a morality play critiquing vanity, superficiality, pride, other forms of materialism and the Seven Deadly Sins. It was also a statement on the converse: simplicity, humility, and other important virtues. The Beverly Hillbillies was popular and funny because it was true.

Yes, the cancellation of those shows was a sudden shock to a kid of our generation. To suddenly no longer have those shows on the air, except in syndication, was heartbreaking. I know that most good shows don't last forever, but the really good ones sometimes never get to say a proper farewell. And that is the biggest crime to me that CBS committed. It may have seemed like an excellent programming decision but to not let us say goodbye to our favorite shows and actors was an act of cowardice and they should have given those programs the right send off. Oh well, we still have our memories and archives to remind us of those simpler times.

It wasn't courage, Dave. The Purge was spurred by a profound change in morality and the buying power of those involved in the "new morality". No courage needed, just a cash register. I have a question to ask about those shows that got the axe, though. If they were no longer reflective of the time they represented then why are we all trying so hard to climb back into that womb? And for a very long time now. ME TV is doing a fantastic business on a truck load of the shows I grew up watching. The hubby and I could qoute the scripts forward and backward from many of them but still we watch. And it's more than simple nostalgia, Dave. As I've said before, these are TV shows I don't have to be afraid of watching with my family, or alone. No nudity, vulgarity, blood and guts, hate speech, no nothing that characterizes what is promoted today. Those old programs were, and still are, just plain good. Sorry for droning on. The rural purge was all about demos. Sure, the rural shows had lots of viewers, but the demo was skewing VERY old...and the older the person, the less likely they are to spend money on things that aren't essential. The sponsors wanted viewers in the 18-49 demo, since they spend money on things that older 50-plus people would not spend money on. That's a cold, but honest, way to explain the rural purge. It all comes down to dollars and cents. Sad, but true.

Wasn't the whole purge due to demographics? The people watching the rural show didn't have much money, it's the advertisers that call the shots eventually. Wealthy viewers were more prized by advertisers, so a smaller audience got to call the shots about what shows lived and died.

How did the shows they DIDN'T cancel fare? Not the shows they brought in to replace them but the ones they decided to keep that were already on the air when the purge happened?

Great question, Patrick. Well...one show that was saved from the purge on CBS was Gunsmoke which held on until 1975 before the network execs finally gave it the axe.

I believe the purge had to be done eventually, but I agree with you Dave, it would have been an easier transition for fans if the latter shows like "All In The Family" overlapped with the "rural" programs winding down. On another note, it recently was brought to my attention Max Baer, Jr. is the only surviving cast member from "The Beverly Hillbillies". I even checked on semi-regular Louis Nye (Sonny Drysdale) and he passed away in the early 2000's. Can you consider a video on him? I always thought Louis Nye was an under-appreciated talent.

The final season of The Beverly Hillbillies was really tired I noticed. CBS had awful demographics (older, largely rural audiences to try and attract advertising $$ with). These shows/concepts had been around for years..the suits hated them and their crap demographics. The success of All in the Family and Mary Tyler Moore can also be 'thanked'. They needed time slots for the new blood (shows) to turn the laggard CBS around and in a couple years, CBS was number one from these moves...the rural purge was part of it...for good or bad, even though some still had high ratings, just weak demographics and tired formats....

The thing is I love All in The Family, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, Good Times, What's Happening, Barney Miller, Taxi, WKRP, The Bob Newhart Show, The Odd Couple, Mary Tyler Moore etc. and more 70s shows like that but at the same time I think there's no reason why they couldn't have at least given the rural shows last episodes the fans deserved at least that much not to mention the casts and crews of those shows were just as talented and hardworking as the later shows. All I know is that there's no reason both can't co exist, tv should be diverse like real life in content yet it's still so singular. Hell, they seem to co exist on nostalgic channels like METV, Get Tv, Tv Land etc.

@@kendallrivers1119 Are you talking about the rural comedies having a series finale? So the audiences could say goodbye to the beloved characters? Sitcoms back then NEVER had big final episodes. That came later.

We disconnected our cable and stopped watching television about four years ago. My wife and I found nothing but junk and reality tv with a really generous helping of advertisements. We read, use the internet and talk with our neighbours. Perhaps if programs like the Andy Griffith Show and Carol Burnet were still on, perhaps we’d still be watching.

The shows you seek are on an OTA (over the air) network called MeTV. If you are 30 or so miles near a big city, you should be able to pick it up on one of the local sub-channels with something like a Mohu Leaf antenna. Best part...after you pay for the antenna, your TV is free. Woo hoo!

I have much to say about Fred Silverman as well. He was president of all three networks at different times, and not only was responsible for the Rural Purge, but was responsible for cancelling The Bionic Woman on ABC while it still did well in the ratings, and then when it switched to NBC, he became its president and canceled it again. His downfall occurred when he approved of a show called Super Train (Love Boat on railroad tracks) due to the massive expenditures the show required and Hello Larry which is widely considered one of the worst tv shows of all time. NBC was taken over by Brandon Tartikoff after Silverman was given the boot.

The show's from the fifties till about the early nineties were good. Loved the rural shows and I remember when we went from rural shows to MTM, All in the family, Bob Newhart etc. Those were great shows as well. Most people who were old enough remember what they watched on Saturday nights in 1973. I know I do. Great line up on CBS. Today there is so much on TV that I don't watch. I usually watch the old stuff on ME TV, Antenna TV. There is way to much out there and I don't want to get attached to any new shows. Plus most of what's out their is garbage. At least in my eyes. I'm saying this as am watching an episode of Mannix from 1970. Old TV shows and music are way better from years ago.

I enjoy your videos a lot, nice change of pace from this chaotic world. To be honest I never watched any of these shows. When I was a kid, we were outside from the moment we got home from school until dad turned on the porch light, and then it was homework and off to bed. The 70's may have been a turbulent time but it was a great time to be a kid. I still don't watch tv which is probably a blessing in this time.

The "real world" was still watching those shows. It wasn't the audience; it was the conceit and agenda of the programmers. Besides, The "Waltons" which was also on CBS and about "simple folks" continued throughout the 1970's as did "Little House on the Prairie" on NBC. That sort of contradicts your general theory but those were primarily family dramas with "progressive" themes so that was more to the liking of the studio management and their perceived pressures to be more socially relevant. In the 1970's even sitcoms had to have a "very special" episode to depress the audience.

Here’s a curiosity. In the midst of this purge and the debut of more sophisticated shows (some actually were great, like MTM), CBS debuted The Walton’s in 1971. Couldn’t get more rural than that show, though it differed in that it took place starting during the Great Depression. That show was a hit and ran for 10 more years.
@jdsundstrom

It is a curiosity indeed. And, on NBC, Little House on the Prairie debuted a couple of years after that. My thinking is that the purge was directed at comedies and variety shows. For whatever reason, the dramas seemed to be okay.

I recall that time very well, though I have to admit I wasn't very interested in current events at that stage in my life. I was mainly concerned with getting to watch my beloved cartoon shows; Bugs Bunny, The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, The Archie Show, and my fave, The Banana Splits. But I do remember a gradual phasing out of shows that I also loved; The Andy Griffith Show, Mr. Ed, The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, Mayberry R.F.D., etc. in favor of more "urban" themed shows like All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford and Son, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Chico and the Man, The Bob Newhart Show, etc., all of which I grew to enjoy as well. Wow, I miss my childhood.
