This mother & calf have been separated from the herd, it’s not common that this happens. Staying with the herd ensures the safety of the calf & provides support for the mother. Matriarchal herds work together to care & protect the young, so being separated can be dangerous.
Elephants may walk up to 50 miles a day, so they most certainly would have caught up to their herd eventually.
