a friend of mine has this story about how he was looking for a new house and he didn't want to move into the wrong area (he had and experiences w homophobes) and he literally just knocked on doors in the area like "hi do you support the LGBT+ community?" and one guy responded "yeah, I'm gay. Do you wanna come in? I made fairy cakes" five years later I just got a wedding invitation- edit: guys I'm British and Fairy Cakes are like small cupcakes (not muffins, cakes) where you cut off some of the top of the cake and make "fairy wings" out of the bits you cut off. then you put icing (not frosting) on it and stick the fairy wings in that.

@@MeemahSN I just think platonic friendships between different genders should be normalized and it feels ridiculous to me they aren't? Never had a guy friend growing up, only girls (well, and enbies, later it turned out 😄), and I honestly didn't process guys being, like, people? Which sounds super bad yeah 😅 But to me as a kid, there was my dad, my grandpa, and the boys my age were just a mysterious existence of "you see them at school, are expected to have a crush on them" 🙈 I seriously wish I would have had guy friends much sooner. And yeah, one of my best friends now is a guy, and yes, when we first started hanging out, it took like a year to convince my family we weren't dating, and we've been treated as a couple by all sorts of shop clerks, too, which... Well it can be funny, but mostly it's just kinda annoying 😅 Not to mention his first boyfriend was paranoid over if we had something going on and it was so awkward and awful 😖 So please, people, normalize friendships between different genders, and *believe* people when they tell you they're friends!

Yeah I'm curious about that. If you come across any other similar posters that give context I would like to know. Awhile ago I came across two handmade posters outside of a hotel I was staying at. One was a poster I did not understand; talking about protecting kids from something (it used a word or bill # that at the time I didnt know the meaning of). The other poster was very anti-choice and I used that context to assume I really wasn't going to like the confusing poster. I tore them both down and it turns out the confusing poster was VERY homophobic and was trying to "protect children" by making it illegal to talk about anything lgbt related in classrooms.

Agreed. I'm turning 44 this week, and I only just figured out I was non-binary 5 or 6 years ago, though I probably would have worked it out when I was a questioning teen, had the language and concepts been available in the small, rural, pre-internet town where I was growing up. Hell, figuring out I was queer in that environment was awful enough. I absolutely feel what you are feeling, and I'm with you, my friend.

In real life, I just told them. If i slip up at first, out of habit, please correct me. I ofc don't mean to. It's not a big deal. Because they knew it was accidental. You are probably getting confused and mixed with robes that men used to wear. Robes are completely different from dresses, including kilts. The Bible says that wearing clothes that pertain to the opposite gender, is not only a sin, but it's also an abomination. Those men are in trouble on the day of judgement if they don't repent! Men shouldn't wear dresses or skirts under any circumstance, no matter how "comfortable" it may feel. Men wear those as a sexual fetish/kink. It is an act of self degrading perversion.

@heleneverbach
@heleneverbach 2 жыл бұрын
@@clarence_claymore. sexual identity is (often) about a lot more than "who you want to sleep with". Displaying a pride flag is less like posting a sign saying "I think blondes are hot" or some other sexual preference and more like posting a sign saying "I'm accepting of sexually marginalized people". As far as I know, none of the people who've knocked on my parent's door have been responding to any sexual desires communicated through the pride flag, because it's a pretty vague symbol in terms of communicating attraction or desire or any information about who someone has sex with or dates. My parents are a monogamously married man and woman, so if anyone does interpret the pride flag as some symbol of who they want to have sex with, they'll be disappointed to realize my parents are basically just the standard American hetero couple. Really, in this context, the pride flag is a symbol demonstrating my parent's dedication to queer and trans people's rights and to a world in which saying "I support queer people" would be a politically neutral act

@heleneverbach
@heleneverbach 2 жыл бұрын
@@clarence_claymore. I'm not super into your use of the term 'homosexual', although that's totally a personal preference about language. I just feel like 'homosexual' has pathologizing implications because of its history coming out of psychiatry and sexology in the 19th century as a mental illness classification (unlike the terms gay or queer, which also have complex histories but which I personally prefer to use when talking about myself or other gay and queer people). To answer your question for how are queer people marginalized, a bunch of ways! We're discriminated against legally (so it is surprising you seem to think the government, I assume you mean the US government since you later say silicon valley, is supportive of us). There is no federal law that bans discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in public accommodations, like restaurants, theaters and other businesses. In some states, it is legal to fire people for being LGBTQIA+. Some states deny trans people from using public restrooms. Trans people are disproportionately victims of physical violence, something that is compounded by race and class (so poor trans women of color are more vulnerable to this kind of violence than white wealthy trans women for instance). Hollywood certainly has a complex history with supporting queer people- the Hays code in the mid 20th century made it so all hollywood films depicting queer characters ended in those characters being punished, usually through violent death. This established a film language for queer people's suffering that continues in film (and particularly cartoons) today with queer coded characters dying horribly (look into 'bury your gays' trope for examples). Universities vary with their queer support- certainly some do support their queer students, but many unfortunately don't. If queerness isn't about sexual desire, do I think it's about activism? Sort of. I think queerness can mean a lot of different things to different people. Personally I do think queer as a political term is a pretty radical and interesting idea- check out Cathy Cohen's excellent essay "Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens" to read more about this idea (she basically argues that queer is more useful as a term for political organizing around liberation of all sexually marginalized people, including single black mothers on welfare, rather than using queer as an essentialist term describing desire). It seems you don't identify as queer, so I kind of feel like the nuances of what queer means to different queer people is something you've probably not spent that much time looking into (which is okay! I have a BA in feminist studies and am getting an MA in this topic right now, and I don't expect all people to find reading post-structuralist discourse about sexual identity labels as interesting as I do). If you do wanna learn more about this topic, a good introductory text is Queer a Graphic History. Nikki Sullivan's “Queer: a Question of Being or a Question of Doing?” is also good.

oh SAME, I've never understood "gay people shouldn't flaunt their gayness" because to me, everyone is always flaunting their attraction (especially the Str8s) and it's kind of weird. It's worse when it comes to marriage discussions.

Thank you Jamie. In a world where the media is constantly bombarded with the worst (RvW possibly repealed, Alabama's overt anti trans legislation, etc), it's nice to see people being genuinely supportive. Don't get me wrong, I love a good r/arethestraightsokay video, but it's important to view the really good things as well. Absolutely loved the oldies in the dresses supporting Evan. Also, the lines on my hand sync up.... Is there something I need to tell my wife?
