Yes, I still have plenty of those old game manuals. The trade in for in game tutorials is not bad but they are often not detailed enough and are info dumps. A lot of the information does not stick for many people.

The combat is so radically different than what I’m used to I’m having a hard time getting into it….I feel like there are to many mechanics it’s insane. There should be a practice area where you can’t kill the enemy so you can keep attacking/learning

"radically different than what I'm used to" in terms of "Tales of" games or gaming in general? This one is more methodic and purposeful to me than the previous ones I've played. "There should be a practice area where you can't kill the enemy so you can keep attacking/learning." I agree. There should be one 'earlier' in the game.

@@cardadcgt-buildingdecks just in general. I’ve never played a tales game before. I put 10ish more hours in and I’m starting to get it. Had to start over to get rid of the dlc items it was making the game unbalanced. Was killing stuff to easily without any skill.

There’s an artifact you can get that makes you and enemies deal 1 damage with every attack. Pretty tough to die and you can just go hard on combo practice.
@johnnyallenshaneprater4870
@johnnyallenshaneprater4870 9 ай бұрын
There is a practice area basically. The training grounds in Menancia. It's in Vinscint. Do the solo challenge with whoever you want to choose then pick the bottom option, where you have to knock them down in order to do damage. Then just make sure you dont use your boost attack cause then it will drop the enemy depending on which character you're using. As long as you dont knock down the enemy then you will only do 1 point of damage every time so it basically turns the enemy into an endless punching bag.

@cardadcgt-buildingdecks
@cardadcgt-buildingdecks Жыл бұрын
What skills character's use is within your control but making it so they don't get hit as much!? Unfortunately that is not happening and that is just how multi character action games are, BUT in the "Party AI Controls" timestamp. "tweaking my AI party so they use the better skills" - Turn off the skills you don't want characters to use in the Artes menu. "wont get hit as much" - The most you can do is switch between set strategies in the Strategy menu. Healing only and Don't do anything will make them prioritize their safety and Focus on healing will make them focus on safety if their HP is low enough. Use Change Tactics Details to adjust the values of any of these.

Very comprehensive! I’d just like to add a few points! First the point about spells being quicker to cast the longer your chain of actions. As long as you do not return to idle, this bonus is maintained. Once you run out of AG, you can string together dodges or jumps to keep your chain alive. As soon as you jump/dodge your AG will start to recover. Simply keep dodging or jumping until AG is full and you’ll be able to cast the high tier spells with a maxed out casting speed. Second, just a small hidden effect of some stats. Likely a leftover from Zestiria and Berseria, having more Elemental Attack increase healing given and having more Elemental Defence increases healing received. Third is ailment effect on AG. This one is a bit misleading, it doesn’t reduce AG recovery speed as implied, but actually caps your max AG to half (rounded up). Fourth is details about cooking. You can press the pad button to get a detailed explanation of the effect of a recipe and view the character’s favourite meal effect in full detail.
@cardadcgt-buildingdecks
@cardadcgt-buildingdecks Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. There is always something I'll not notice/know. I encourage informing me of such information. First Point. Excuse me sir you can do that!? (Goes to check.........you can!) Second Point. Oh really! Third Point. This is a Tales of classic of something not working exactly as it is written. Gotta love em for that. Fourth Point. I did not mention the touch pad button press. Thank you for pointing it out. I could not see a more detailed version of a character's favorite meal effect in the 'Cooking Effect Details' window (It does show up arrows and down arrows along with time changes for some of them though when hovered over.)
@Jamesaga
@Jamesaga Жыл бұрын
@@cardadcgt-buildingdecks No problem! Sadly these games don’t explain themselves well sometimes, so videos like this are always really appreciated! As for the favourite meal effect, most of them fit in that little window on the right, but Dohalim and Shionne’s get cut off and can only be read in the details screen. It took me ages to figure out Dohalim’s effect wasn’t just “Increase effect by 30% once duration” or whatever it gets cut off at lmao. Iirc, the Cooking Effect Details screen also describes the exact percentage it increases your stats, but I’m not confident on that one, just a hazy memory.

I know im a bit late to be posting on this video, so i hope i dont get too many "necromancer" comments, even though i love playing as a necromancer in games 😂😂. Anyways, my reason for making this comment is because i would jist like to thank you so very much for making such a detailed breakdown of the combat and other mechanics in the game. Im new to the Tales series, but not RPGs or JRPGs in general so i had a bit of an eaiser time than a conplete newcomer, but even after watching other videos and reading other posts, i was having a little trouble with the combo system. Having a limit to the number of normal attacks before you go into a cooldown period, was new to me in these types of games so i looked for more help online and finally found this video and its easily the best video to watch for newcomers to the game. You have my deepest gratitude, my good sir, for taking the time and effort to make this video to help people like me. I rarely if ever, like and subscribe and all that, to KZfaq channels, but i made an exception for you and your page soley on this video. Please keep making more videos like it for other games. Maybe for Trials of Mana, FF7 Remake, and Scarlet Nexus, to name a few of the games ive started playing and could use some more info on lol. But seriously, thank you again for doing this video the way you did and keep up the noble work!
@cardadcgt-buildingdecks

It is never too late to post a comment. I've seen decade+ old videos still getting new comments...AND being responded to by the channel owner! Also you are not alone with the combo system because previous Tales of games did not have 2 attack types to worry about. Like your normal attacks and artes that Arise has. Older games sometimes did limit how many attacks you could do in a row but there was no interweaving of 2 different attack types. Arise's system I'm sure was new to a lot of people. It is always amazing to know that what I wanted to get across by making these videos hits as intended because I would often run into gaps of information in the past when wanting to know something specific about a game. Videos would tell me the basics...which I knew but did not mention the little things I wanted to know. Thank you for your comment! As for your game suggestions. I know of each of them and I've thought about FF7 Remake. I currently have other games in mind first though.

Thank you. Start with Alphen or Law as they are the easiest to combo with. Many of their artes combo into each other well (especially the earlier ones). Try replacing a ground or aerial arte from the example combos in the video with a different one or pick 2 artes and see if they combo. It is trial and error. Faster artes will make comboing easier like Swallow Blade for Alphen as an example (I almost used it through the entire game). Here are a few ways to go about combos. Look at the "Combat example" timestamp. Use slow attacks while enemies are downed and faster ones when not or even start the combo with the slower attack. Use Boost Attacks when you find something is not in Break status and is about to hit you, Boost Attacks can extend combos (Add any boost attack at the end of any of the example combos to regain 3 AG and start the combo over on the same enemy. Do wait a bit cause of course you won't be juggling it while it is downed.), and if you have Overlimit you don't need to worry about any of that since AG is no longer a factor. Try these sets and see what you think: Alphen - Ground Attacks Lightning Thrust, Shockwave Slash, Thunder Fang Alphen - Aerial Attacks Mirage, Stardust, Luna Rondo Law - Ground Attacks Super Swallow Dance (Pay attention to the usable artes in the bottom right corner), Whirlwind Snap, Tectonic Punch Law - Aerial Attacks Death Blossom, Fang Bolero, Glimmer Dragon

Holding block and attacking does not activate the "Stronger if activated while guarding" for Kisara. The shield glows white and the damage for the arte increases. @@cardadcgt-buildingdecks Actually the Guard Ignition aka the "shield grows white and damage increases" is different from what "Stronger if activated while guard" is referring to. Artes with this description are called shield strike artes, using them while guarding will turn them into a stronger version with more hits(for example Tiger Blade an originally two-hit arte will now deal 3 hits), some even come with additional effects/animations. You can try using Kisara's Lion Howl in training area, compare using it with and without holding the block button, the difference is fairly obvious.

You are not wrong. It is possible to play that way in many games. It starts to put a game's balance into question, but ultimately it is up to us to play either efficiently or in what way we have the most fun. I've done the same as you in other games and it can be funny how broken a game is (once you figure it out). Your explanation is why I put "most" games on whatever the hardest difficulty is available. It forces me to really learn the systems and form a strategy (this does not work for all games as some difficulty levels are utter insanity like getting hit once and dying or shoot this enemy for 5 minutes from behind cover without ever moving).

Now that I've finally played this game, the combat is unfortunately subpar. This game is marred by balancing issues and the combat system itself is no exception. Like the boost system, it's great in concept but is almost useless in execution due to them restricting how often you can use them. Yes you can counter a shielded enemy- one single enemy one time per multiple fights, that is in a group and you might need to fight a few groups in a row before you can use the boost attack again. So %90+ of the time you end up dealing with shielded enemies not with the boost attacks but by some other means, usually just running behind them. Same with flying enemies (aerial attacks to counter), spell casting enemies (waiting for them to start casting and then just hit them). In the end the whole boost attack mechanic becomes just a special attack used against certain bosses and mini bosses or particularly annoying enemies of that type and isn't a counter for that type of enemy at all. Yes I know there's way to get the gauge to boost faster but it'll never be fast enough to be a counter to all the enemies of a type you'll fight, thus you need learn a way to deal with them without the boost mechanic, which makes the mechanic rather pointless as a counter mechanic.
@cardadcgt-buildingdecks
@cardadcgt-buildingdecks Жыл бұрын
You are correct. The boost attacks will not get you out of every situation since they have to charge to be used (so they aren't available all the time) and some boost attack counters can only be done a certain number of times in a fight. Luckily you still get the knockdowns or juggles. The only thing that is different in my thinking of this mechanic stems from how Tales of games function in general. I see their mechanics as a means to create an early advantage for yourself. From there you combo enemies down before they can retaliate against you after burning your resources. The mechanics are not a means to keep the player at a constant advantage during an entire fight. The games want you to have an understanding of how to fight enemies so they do not simply zerg you down or become a huge annoyance. Again you are correct and I understand how these things could cause frustration.

what annoys me is how poorly the game explains what certain stats do. I had no idea there was a stat tied to breaking through super armor and I was so annoyed by how clunky the combat was. Alfyn and especially law if you go raw attack power on them nothing ever reacts to their hits so they just get steam rolled but if you build them properly enemies actually begin to stop being a brick wall unless its a large enemy or a boss fight. I hope they explain the super armor a bit better so my experience isnt soured as badly next time.
@cardadcgt-buildingdecks
@cardadcgt-buildingdecks 8 ай бұрын
Yep that tends to be a rpg thing where what a stat does is not obvious. You either have to look in the menus and find it or the information was not there from the start. The combat clunkyness comes from the attacks not being able to be cancelled mid animation. This style is hit or miss for people.
