Could you help me make this clear, sir? "Do you have any idea how much it would cost to upgrade to first class?" why do you use would here instead of will? 'Cause I think it is a shortening of "Do you have any idea how much it will cost if I upgrade to first class?" and it's a conditional sentences type 1. Thanks.

"Will" is a more forceful or assertive word than "could". It is considered to be more polite to use "could" instead of "will".
