(one of them was "fart", another was "diesel fuel") Like I get the allure of possibly having certain scents in a video game, but I think there is a very heavy line in the sand about what scents should be in a game, because something like the smell of burned coffee, or someone smoking pot ("skunk" smell) might make someone vomit in seconds. If a scent is a food, it might trigger an allergy (cause some people have had reactions this way), or it might make someone sick or hungry. If a scent is a non-food (Eg gasoline, grass, rotting flesh) it might also make someone sick. I'd say there are potentially maybe 20 scents that are viable, that we commonly smell: Food/People: - Coconut/Suntan lotion - Cherry, Raspberry and Strawberry ("berry" smell) - Orange, Lemon, Lime and Grapefruit (Citrus/acidic) - Grape/Wine smell - Fried Potato/Potato chip/French Fries (deep frying) - Corn/Popcorn/Buttered popcorn - Fish (fresh) - Women's expensive perfume (alcohol) - Men's expensive cologne (alcohol) Environment: - Fresh cut Grass (Kentucky Bluegrass) - Pine/Spruce/Douglas Fir (Evergreen conifer trees) - Ocean (salt water) - Candle/matches (sulfur) - Burning wood Gross smells: - Stale tobacco - Stale beer - Garbage - Skunk/Cannabis - Fish (dead) - 2-stroke gasoline fuel (lawn mower/outboard boat motor) These are all off the top of my head, now intensity of certain smells should be controlled like volume controls. Because I don't want to play a game that is gonna make me vomit every time I go into a zombie environment. Hell, I would probably disable the system entirely. But on the flip side of that, a game like Cooking Simulator can't possibly simulate 1000 different food dishes smells, but it should be able to replicate the major smells of a kitchen, fruity smells, vegetable smells, deep frying, baking, melting butter, fish, etc. Likewise playing something like Pacific Drive would likely be exclusively Evergreen, Grass, gasoline and the occasional garbage smell.

I remember my first immersion was watching something on TV back in the early to mid 1980's with a scratch card that you had to scratch when the programme required it. 1000% no. Scent allergies are very common, with estimates as high as 5% of the population. My wife and eldest child both fall into that category, with fragrances being a migraine trigger for them.

If a game developer worked with them and released scent packs tuned to a specific game, I could see it being a good way to increase immersion or even a really good experience. Truthfully, I would love it if they would cut back on in game micro-transactions to sell scent refills for the games that somebody might spend several hundred or a thousand plus hours in, at least the money would be going to an actual consumable. Less horse armor, more horse crap!

I think that the best way to have a standardized set of scents would be to completely do away with using essential oils that are dispensed, and instead find a way to stimulate the smell receptors in the nose (or the neurons responsible for processing smell in the brain). Now, if only we could find a way to stimulate those individual receptors. Who knows, maybe perhaps something like Neuralink could even be used to excite those receptors/nerve cells (though, to be honest... I'm not a big fan of having a chip inserted into my brain, lol). So it has to be something that you can easily put on or off (like with a VR headset).

I do really like smell effects when I experience them in theme park rides, but I think it might be tricky to implement into video games because of how much variety there is Edit: also fun fact, there is a vrchat convention that sometimes sells room sprays that fit the environment that it's set in. Assuming the smells would even be accurate, this is a completely doomed idea and here's why: Using AI to add smells means that you'll effectively be experiencing a delay in your olefactory senses all the time. The AI has to see the grass for it to be released as a scent. Where it would be a value add is if you could smell that you're near water before it appears on screen. I realize for people who don't spend much time outside this probably doesn't even make sense, sort of negating this idea yet again. In short, it's really cool to see experiments like this, but this is a terrible idea in every way I can think of.
