As always ... awesome lesson Jay. I love the sticking rules that you've used in the video. I also like to use Gary Chaffee's stickings assignments for filling in the 16th's between the melody notes. So of course the distance of three 16th notes you would play either a: RLL or LRR depending on which hand is leading and for a Quarter note or four 16th's you could play a paradiddle, similarly the distance of six 16th's notes you could play a double paradiddle or a paradiddle-diddle and so on. The distance of five 16th's and seven 16th's would have their own stickings of course. I would most likely have to write them in ... as it is a work in progress. I also steal, steal, steal like a thief !! Thanks for the video.

Thanks for this excellent lesson Jay ! Personally, I use right hand leading. When I read a melody, I take care of things so that I accent on right hand only. For this purpose, I use diddles. Best regards. Franck

Franck Reidt that’s a good one... especially when you use Ted Reed’s Syncopation for the note source and read in swing time. That’s probably worthy of a lesson in itself.

@@Thedrummersalmanac It works very well with sixteenth too. I find that more easy than Shaffee's sticking and single stroke.Furthermore, it sounds awesome . Fore those reasons I use it all the time for fills. I look forward to see your video about that matter ! 👍😉

That's awesome Jonh... It's almost like you're using Gary Chaffee's A, B, C and D stickings from his "Sticking Patterns" book, and then applying them as a sticking rule. Very cool and very tough. Definity worth it if you can get it together.

A note source just needs to be random. A good source that I use is in the Gary Chester New Breed book... it has a really nice note source for coasting. For triplets my go to is Ted Reeds Syncopation... starting on pg 38.

Hey Sal, I hear ya. "Thumbs down" are just part of the online climate. You can never please everyone, nor should you try. ... Hi Gianluca, Interesting comment... I'd love to know why you think I can't post a video on drum solos with the drums muted in this way, exactly? Would you care to elaborate? As a teacher, I like to be able to talk and explain over what I am playing. The mutes allow me to do that. Also, a lot of people don't have the means to practice on an acoustic drum set, so mutes like this are a solid option for them.

Perhaps you're not listening to the right drum solos… not all drum solos are equal, so it’s a pretty broad judgment to make.

1. This a very well conceived and articulated lesson. 2. If you can think musically, you can play musically. Think of yourself as a musician who plays drums. Take what he’s given you here and apply it to the form of a given tune. Play such that anyone hearing you will be able to sing the melody over what you’re playing. You may find your musical awareness enhanced.

E Kap ...thanks for the comment! Just to clarify for you. I am not assuming every drummer has the same gig.lol Of course, every situation is different, but the technique is the same and can be applied to any situation. As far as band leaders only existing in the big band era. I am currently the band leader of an 11 piece club date band and those types of situations are very common these days. If you are in a smaller group like an original project, then you probably don’t have a band leader, but most professional situations still have a music director, which is essentially the same thing. As far as coasting... you said something like “that does not mean what you are playing sounds good...” that is true, but this lesson just demonstrates the technique or the tool... it is not about how to apply it musically and in the right situation. That is more for you to develop on your own and comes with experience. I do have other lessons that talk about that in more detail, if you’re interested. Thanks again, my friend.
