@@RotarySMP Do you actually do it as stop motion - stage each frame, and take an image, or do you just let a video camera run, and grab a frame when there's no outside stuff in the shot?
@RotarySMP
@RotarySMP 7 ай бұрын
@@gorak9000 It was stop motion. Move a bit, snap a pic, move a bit, snap a pic. The Lumix cameras are fantastic for it, as they leave a ghost image of the last two frames, so you can see how much you move each bit.

As a German, I second that: _Almost_ any tool found anywhere has bottle-opening capabilities. And, depending on whos calipers/torque wrench/ratchet/...you just used to open your beer with, you are also liable to find out that _every single tool within reach_ also can be used to smack you on the head quite hard.
@RotarySMP

@@kaibroeking9968 I like that. You know I was at a surplus tool place in Slovakia a few years ago, and they sold by the kg, so the light stuff was cheap, but vises etc too expensive. They had a bin full of 2worn out micrometers. I should have bought a handful and used them as welding G-clamps. :)

I used to be an automotive mechanic back when we still turned rotors and drums at the shop. We were always told to inspect for inclusions or defects after every pass. I probably turned thousands of rotors/drums over the years and never found any. So yeah, they're probably a great source of cast iron, especially if the part you need is smaller than the original dimension of the rotor.

I guess with the enormous production volumes, combined with the safety risks, the vendors making them and the car companies have a really strong grip on process control with them.

For mounting weird stuff in the lathe, I have a sacrificial face plate. It's just 12mm thick aluminium plate cut to a 150mm circle, and permanently mounted on a 25mm mandrel which fits securely in the 3 jaw lathe chuck. So I can take it in/out of the chuck in a couple of seconds. Being "sacrificial" I just drill and tap anywhere on it to hold the weird gubbins as needed, and can even hold a counterweight etc. For most jobs it has enough tapped holes in it I can usually find a way to hold the gubbins with some of the existing holes and some washers or bits of junk used as washers. I'm sure you can imagine it. But that best bit is the mandrel lets me pull the whole thing in and out of the lathe in a couple of seconds, retaining concentric alignment in the 3 jaw. Very handy! 👍

G’Day Mark, loads to comment upon, so here we go. First, Danke Stefan! You must be one of the good guys. 👍 Next, crafty repair work there. I’d not have thought of bringing epoxy into it, myself, but it seems perfectly suitable in this application. 🤔 That’s a superb drill press you have. Wish I could find one… Love that stop motion! 😃 I suspect that Vienna imposes the same sidewalk rule that we see here: irrespective of the municipal ownership of the sidewalk itself, it’s the abutter’s duty to clear the sidewalk of snow. We have 24 hours to accomplish this. It is burdensome for some owners, but we muddle through.
@RotarySMP
@RotarySMP 7 ай бұрын
Hi Doric. That drill is lovely. Made in Vienna, so probably not common in New England. Thanks. I like doing the stop motion for small assemblies like that. Here if you dont clear the sidewalk, and someone slips, you are liable. At least if it is icy, you theoretically dont have to clear snow, but it will turn to ice. Lucky I only have 9m of sidewalk.

An excellent video that obviously took a great deal of effort to put together! At one point I found myself thinking NO in my head as the epoxy was deployed, then once I had reigned in my inner engineer I realised that the solution I would have taken would have been far more work, and suitable for a Rolls Royce engine not a bandsaw blade guide 🙂

What can you possibly say to a man who has a hydraulically operated rise and fall bench drill? Awesome!! Loved the video. The blade on the bandsaw should be set so that it just barely clears the pin in the bearing centre and any deflection whatever makes the bearing spin. When i get mine set like that it makes a huge difference to how the machine performs and ease of use. Unfortunately it is not a doall! Phil

Thanks Stefan! Also, if anyone is wondering why people would convert to Mach3 instead of Mach4 - the newer version isn't compatible with a lot of the older stuff, and the company, Newfangled Solutions, does quite a bit of gate keeping when it comes to developing for Mach4, and getting the SDK and development tools. I also see someone got themselves an RGB light for filming...
@RotarySMP
@RotarySMP 7 ай бұрын
Hi Alex, I have two RGB lights. One is a COB with a soft box, and the other a smaller LED panel. The main room is now has 4000K LED panels in the ceiling, so it works fine for filming Schuablin, DoAll, and general bench stuff. The garage is a mess of incandescent bulbs, old florescent tubes, etc. I am chipping away at it. The ring light on the Maho was a gift, but it has really cold light (must be 5500K LED's, probably with low CRI). and is a nightmare for color balancing the filming of milling operations. Sooner or later I need to redo it with some high CRI 4000K LEDs.

Nice video. I've always thought that Doall seemed to go out of their way to complicate many aspects of their bandsaws. From the guides to the transmissions. As complicated as the guide casting are, they still are not adjustable for different blade widths. You are giving new life and making things better tho. Grob saws are the same, different guides for each blade width. I made fully (1/8-1") adjustable guides for my Grob vert. saw.

The only benefit I see is to grease them very regularly, so that the grease is flowing in from behind the bearing, flushing the saw dust and grit out the front of the bearing each time.

that's not snow - just barley frost🤣 this morning i had -18 degrees C and just over kneedeep of snow - but it's early in the winter,so it will be much more , a nice fix Marc whit a sloppy fit like that on the berarings i woud have used loctite bearing-glue to fix them in place - the casting might be damaged if the entire bearing starts to rotate

I suspected there might be other parts of the world where this rare "heavy" snow fall is not so heavy :) I considered loctiting them in, but since the loading from the band is nearly entirely axial, and very light at that, I decided to use them as is.

Hi Andrew. I could have, if I had touched off to find center before gluing in the chunk of cast iron. Once i did that, it covered about 40% of the circumference, and would have been a pain to touch off on. Also as I didn't want to touch the bores, just the seat, the lathe allowed my to infeed at the bottom of the bore.

Nice work! If you're going to be ripping metal parts on the doall, it might be worthwhile to fab a gravity/pulley based feed mechanism (and spring guides) to keep a light steady pressure on the part? pull the part with a magnet or a hook in a notch?

Pity you do not have high temp metal spraying equipment as this would have allowed a much simpler repair of the guide slots and potentially the bearing bores. I have repaired key seats like this many times. You were lucky machining over the thread inserts. Instant death of the cutter if the insert were to move. Don't ask how I know :)

@@RotarySMP eutectic have a have a hot and "cold" processes. both use specialised oxy - acetylene torches. The cold process is really only suitable for building up bearing journals and is useless for tensile stresses. The hot process is akin to brazing but uses a very fine powder to supply a self fluxing filler. Both systems require proprietary torches and powders and are crazy expensive and really only justifiable on high value or parts. I don't follow Abom but a quick search throws up SNS279 showing the hot process and it's applications.
