This show was such a part of my life growing up. As a child I'd wake up at midnight from a bad dream and go see my parents as they watched Johnny. As a teen I enjoyed the funniest comedians and great musicians. As a young adult I loved Johnny's comic brilliance, dapper style and imagined being interviewed by him. There was more class in one night's show than there has been in the entire late night lineup since Johnny signed off.

Wow, listen to how he so powerfully lays into that double Bb at 5:39 like it's nothing and continues a long phrase that descends all the way to the bottom of the horn (down to low Ab to be exact) all in one breath with lot's of articulation and intricate playing in all registers in between. I have been playing trumpet for 52 years. When I was 16, on a Friday night when I could stay up to midnight, the band played a piece with Doc playing a solo in the upper register. I was so excited about Doc's playing that I couldn't like let Doc outdue me! So I picked up my horn and wailed away on it forgetting what time it was. Then I heard a bang from upstairs from my dad jumping out of bed and running downstairs. He yelled "what are you doing?" Realizing that I just woke up everyone in the house all I could say was that I couldn't like Doc out play me! He laughed and went back to bed.

I was in the Kilgore High School Band at the time and attended both year’s concerts in Dodson Auditorium to a sell-out crowd. What a showman Doc was! Amazing technique and range. It literally blew me away. Doc was so impressed with the small town atmosphere of Kilgore that he insisted on getting his senior daughter Nancy out of the big city and attending KC and becoming a member of the band. This video is a great example of why Johnny was so much better than Jay Leno. Look at the interaction between Johnny, Ed, and Doc. Very relaxed, cordial, and respectful. Johnny really cared for his team and interacted with them in a sincere way. Jay Leno, on the other hand, only had Kevin Eubanks and treated him like dirt. Jay Leno was a one man show where the main character was marginally funny. Johnny was an amazing talent made all the better by the people he surrounded himself with. THAT is what made Johnny a legend

@@toddbu-WK7L such a great analysis, Todd, all true. One of Johnny's greatest attributes us something no one else has proved to do: make fun of himself all the time and it seems he really enjoyed it. He was edgy and laid back all the time. We never knew what pure gold he had in him until he retired and all the wannabes proved Johnny the best by not being able to come up to his shoetops. I never laugh at or with the others. I have just started watching these old shows and I do laugh and they are usually wildly entertaining across the board. What a luck out for NBC. They never could have imagined what they had in 1961 when they first hired him. I hope more of th eff shows fron the 60's and 70's keep resurfacing. I was too young and in bed to remember the 60', welk, maybe the late 69's, but to see the NBC peacock at the beginning with the narrator, " the following program is presented in living color, on NBC". When NBC approached Johnny in the 80's and asked him to downsize his band, he told them to take a hike. Finally when they got to replace him they fired the entire orchestra. There has never been a big jazz band on television since. I miss it too.

@@JohnSmith-gq9gn. Exactly. A bunch of leftist idiots making asses of themselves. I don't even try to watch late night anymore. After Leno & Letterman were gone, there was no more late night. Although Ferguson was a good laugh at times.

The bass player had a really awesome groove going which anchored the entire song. In fact the entire rhythm section was fantastic. The wha-wha pedal on the rhythm guitar gave it that total 70’s feel.

I am so happy to see this posted here, thanks for that. They were so tight and well arranged it was incredible. But one of the few criticisms I have of Johnny and the show is how often he announced that the band would be playing a song, and I'd always watch no matter who was on to see the band. And, no exaggeration, almost every time at the end Johnny would announce that sorry we are out of time and the band won't play. I mean, they'd be bsing about some lame crap on and on, and I'm like, it ain't gonna happen. Doc eventually started to get in his face about, and would be like "Yea, we are supposed to play, I hope we don't run out of time, again" kind of thing. It got to be a bit of a thing between them I think. Anyway, it really pissed me off because it happened so much. Maybe I can find all the times they actually played now on the Tube.

That’s the great thing about these musicians. They are so good, they can sound as tight as a band that has been playing an arrangement for a month even though they first saw the music that afternoon at rehearsal. Spectacular!

Doc Severinsen is still kicking! I see below he just turned 94. God Bless the man for the incredible performances. Musicians were the best of the best to get on that crew and virtuoso's sat in every chair. Watch Ed Shaughnessy sight-reading his chart in the first few bars...

I was lucky enough to attend a drum clinic Ed put on at a college here in Hampton VA in the early 90s. I know that's one of his kits but that sure doesn't look like him. I think it might be someone sitting in for him. Just don't know????

@@dallasstiles118 He had quite the resume. My bass teacher landed a bass gig in Hollywood back in the eighties playing with Tom Scott for the Pat Sajak show. This was after touring with Madonna and doing the Rippington’s first two discs. He’s playing bass on this fairly well known smooth jazz tune: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZqUdKpzld_Pmps.html Sadly, I recently found out that he has early stages of dementia.
