In this day and age, can't a bank just electronically verify a check is valid? It shouldn't be that hard for a bank to tell a fake from a real check. I hope she wins her lawsuit.

If she was trying to commit fraud, she would have tried to cash it not deposit it into her own account!!

She was putting money IN the bank, not robbing it!

This is not the first time Chase has had this issue with certain customers. Time to move your money to another bank and let them feel the pain of losing our money.

I worked in a Senior role at JP Morgan Chase but eventually ended up suing for race discrimination in 2012. Then fast forward to 2022 and the old dog is still performing the same tricks.

What’s the big deal??? People of all walks of life have this kind of money. Sell a house, get a bonus check, take out a loan to run a business. That’s not an odd amount of money. She didn’t come there with a $5 million check. WTH!!!

I used to work in banking and am now retired. JPMC really screwed up on the wrong person here. They had no right to refuse the doctor here. If they were worried about the validity of the check all they had to do was place a hold on it until it cleared the issuing bank, just like the newscaster said. Instead what they did was treat her like a criminal and refused to do business with her. I hope this lovely doctor gets every cent she is suing them for. The justice department needs to be informed as this is a clear cut case of racial discrimination. It would be great idea to have banking investigators and auditors to come in and do an exstensive audit of their banking practises. I hope she wins big time!!!

Congrats to Dr. Malika Stewart. I checked for an update and discovered that she dropped the lawsuit after she and Chase settled for an undisclosed amount. She is very pleased. You think that something is a misfortune, and God will turn around and make that misfortune, a true blessing!

I myself have deposited large checks through my lifetime, and never been asked one question or refused a deposit. Best of luck Doctor with your career and lawsuit. I will discontinue any dealings with CHASE.

The manager said " they can refuse service to anyone without a reason." That right there should tell you all you need to know Black people!

I had this issue recently with Chase. They can literally just call the bank that distributed the check to verify that’s it’s legit.

This happened to a colleague of mine who was arrested at Fifth Third Bank for banking while Hispanic. She was trying to deposit a paycheck from the federal courts and the teller thought it was a fake welfare check. Only in her case, she was cuffed and taken to the police station.

That is absolutely true they could have just placed the check on hold until they verified that it was a valid check. I worked at a bank for a number of years so I am speaking from experience.

Don't bank with Chase. This is what we need to do when we experience discrimination like this. Take our business elsewhere.

My parents were deaf and a bank in Canada refused to open an account for them in the 1950s, unless they had a 'responsible' hearing person co-sign for them. This shows that discrimination occurs in all sizes, shapes, colours and time periods. Unfortunately, my parents were not able to sue the bank.

I went to chase to cash a check in Maple Grove MN, I was told that the company has a cash limit on their account and my check was too large and they couldn’t tell me the limit - this happened last month. I don’t recall being asked if I wanted to open a an account. - matter of fact I wasn’t asked I was told to deposit it in like a bank account of my own. In Jan I went to Wells Fargo to cash a check and wasn’t asked if k wants to open an account either. The manager called HR to be on the phone while I cashed my check. They asked for my social security number, birthday and what I did for a living - maybe I should check on these to make sure that was protocol.

I hope she wins her lawsuit. I hope Chase pays off all of her medical school debt 3x over. This is ridiculous. There are ways to verify checks including putting them on hold for a few days. Chase didn’t even try, instead they told her that they have a right to refuse. Pay the lady👩‍⚖️

JPMorgan Chase Bank has a history of this. January 2017 JP Morgan Chase Bank was fine 53 million for charging black and brown people higher interest rates or their mortgages.

She should sue and not settle.

in April 2023, Chase settled without disclosing how much. The young doctor likely paid off her medical school debt in one go.

Now, if it happens to her, a doctor, it is happening everyday to others that do not have the ability to sue. I hope she wins every single penny.

The employee don't have a problem stealing the customers money but they've a problem depositing a check.

Those employees should be ashamed of themselves. Should be fired. There are bad apples in every country and company.

I had the same thing happen to me with Chase about 28 years ago. My father sent me a bank check, drawn on a Chase bank where he lived. He sent it to me, but the Chase where I live refused to honor it, even when I pointed out that the bank itself held the funds that covered the check. About the same time, I attempted to open a new account at my local Bank of America, and they told me that it would take TWENTY-TWO working days for the check to clear! With a vey composed voice I asked the agent how much interest would accrue on the stated amount on the check while the bank used my money. Her eyes almost fell out of their sockets and gasped that they don't pay interest on checks during the clearing process. I took the check, stood up and said that I wasn't in the business of lending interest-free money, and walked out. I hope that doctor Mitchell prevails.

I've worked at a check cashing place. They teach you how to spot a fake check and there are ways to verify a check i.e. calling that company the printed the it to check the validity. There was absolutely no excuse for mishandling that situation.

In June of 2022 Chase reached a settlement before the case went to trial. Terms not disclosed. They paid something. Thank goodness.Big bank bullies need to be sued enough and pay out enough to stop treating depositors money like it theirs.

I used to work for a bank anything over 10K supposed to be investigated, when she deposits the check the investigation would start, I believe there is a 5-10 day hold on the funds until everything is verified. But their hate is wouldn't allow them to even follow the procedures.

All they had to do was put a hold on the check. WTH? So wrong. I’m sorry she had to go through that. Congratulations on becoming a doctor.

Something like this happened to me about 10 years ago. I was DEPOSITING money and they asked for my ID!!!! They check and my VISA card had my name on it. I thought it was strange so I forked over my license. I went to a different branch the next week and handed my license and the teller asked me why? I told her what happened the previous week and she became visible mad. I didn't pursue more information but now I know what was going on. She told me "you don't give your licenses to deposit money." 😒

They wanted to humiliate her plain and simple. The Dr. even had them call the hospital to verify the check. I'm also certain the Dr. would have understood a hold put on the check. Those bank tellers were probably foaming at the mouth knowing it would take them several months to accumulate her start up salary. Welp... at least she can get school loans paid off.

I desperately hope she wins this lawsuit against JP Morgan Chase Bank. She has worked too hard to be treated like a common thief. I know I will not be banking with them again. That apology wasn't good enough next time they will think before they act

Had a similar issue with Compass bank where they would constantly put 10 day holds on my checks that came from my software consulting clients back in the early 2000s when I was in my 20s. Switched banks after about the 3 time of that and after hearing older colleagues with more experience (read charged higher rates) and did not look like me did not have the same issue.

They can verify electronically.. Received a CASHIER’S CHECK from my daughter. They immediately jumped on the phone to check the validity of the check. The check was deposited and partially available. I had enough to cover the entire check, so it was no biggie. I appreciate them checking, but those questions were just racial profiling. So sick of Amurica!

Chase has BEEN doing this. Remember the NFL player they denied opening a high end account a few years ago? Y'all know they got their start by using our ancestors as stocks and bonds, right? They insured slaves as property. They've always been wicked and discriminatory.

1. If anything goes wrong with a bank transaction, you want to talk to "an officer of the bank." An "officer of the bank" can make a decision and bind the bank. 2. I prefer credit unions and smaller banks. If you are active in the community (Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, etc.), you may actually know the people behind the counter. I am an attorney who handles probate and conservatorships. Often, I need a bank that will handle accounts where all executors or conservators need to sign the checks. Only a few banks will handle that type of account. I have a list of 7 in the Los Angeles, Orange County, California area.

Sue their ass. Get as much money as you can. Tell them you have post traumatic syndrome and shake every time you see a bank. Get all your money because the people at that bank were disgusting. Make them give you a public apology. Put it in the newspaper. They are a bank why would they have an account for a customer then refuse them service. What type of foolishness is that? They need to have a valid reason and rules written down listing their reasons for failing to accept a check from an account holder. Sue them for 10 million dollars.

They can deposit the check and just make the funds unavailable until the check clears. Banks do that all the time.

Change comes when we hold them financially accountable for the mental and emotional trauma inflicted!!!

I’m currently living in Texas and I have experienced racism at Chase Bank myself!!!! So I’m not surprised. 🙄

As a banker for over 20 years...if they felt like the check was fraudulent all they had to do was place a Reg CC hold and allow the check to clear. (That's only one if many options) I typed my comment before listening to the entire video (confirmed)

I'm in accounting at my job and we will not as a matter of policy ever issue a sign-on bonus as a live check for exactly this reason. It's often a younger person new to the area trying to open an account with just the check, and banks give them the runaround. So we require a savings or checking account to receive your sign-on bonus and HR puts that in the offer letter so they can't claim they didn't agree to it. We give information on local credit unions to new employees relocating to the area where you can open an account with as little as $10.

The bank took her happy moment away? That's worth $1M? That's punitive. You have them fire the employee that should have known better, and they upgrade your account for free. I thought when the check was processed, if it is invalid, they would reverse the deposit and probably penalize the account holder. No need to scrutinize the individual making the deposit.

It’s bizarre that the employees at bank of such size with resources at their disposal cannot verify the integrity of a check on a timely manner. Moreover, it’s common practice and knowledge that the amount of a deposited check cannot be made available for withdrawal for at least 3 business days as the so-called float can be cleared. In short, there is absolutely no need for this to happen to this customer. Yet, it did. This begs the question of there is some extra unsavory thing going here. The fact that she is Black, trying to do banking in an industry that has shown again and again to discriminate against them, raises the real possibility that racial discrimination and bias is afoot here. Yes, lady, sue the bank. Force its hand through discovery process to air its dirty laundry.

Every African American who banks at Chase should find another bank to handle their business. Just as Chase made it clear to Dr. Mitchel-Steward they had the right to deny her service, we, as customers also have the privilege to deny them the right to handle our money. Money is the language that Chase understands. Chase's statement means they can deny you service based on your color, and do not have to tell you anything. Wake up folks.

Imagine the hilarity that will ensue when she goes to deposit her $1 million settlement check and Chase says, "Ma'am we're not depositing that. That check is fake!" Maybe she will sue for a billion dollars then.

The bank is required by law to ask questions about any transaction of 10k or more. I bought a used car for like 9k (need a cashier check from my bank) and my bank insulted me and asked you can't buy a car for 9k. You going to be doing a whole bunch of repairs and fixing that car up? They could of refused to give me a 9k cashier check...i don't get a million dollars because the bank manager made me feel like shit i was buying a used car...

Dr Mitchell-Stewart is just one of many. I wouldn’t look for an apology, suing and winning would be good for me. People are jealous, racist and can’t stand to see us win. The amount of the check was the issue. It was more than what those tellers get in 3-4 months. Smh I pray she gets all or even more than a mil

Doctor listen to what I’m about to tell you. Anytime a bank don’t take your check. Especially that large. You go to a completely new bank and open a new account. And once you’re comfortable with that and it clears at the new bank did you go back to the bank they denied you the request. Hopefully you get the same teller. And tell her you want to withdraw all your money and close your account.

This is 2022, and they still don’t have a system in place to verify the validity of a check before accusing someone of being a criminal. What the F….

I remember depositing a large check to my bank, not CHASE. They accepted it, made $1,000 available right away, the half of the amount available after five days, then the rest was available after 7 days. The bank was making sure that it was a real check, but never asked me questions, like what I did for a living, etc.

Not even refused cash it....refused to deposit it. How humiliating. That's what a hold is for.

Banks has procedures for checking out checks with large amounts. Just follow the damn procedure. Sue the hell out of them.

To explain to his civil rights law students that even though black America had experience civil and Voting rights victories in 1964 and 1965 . I too was racially profiled by Chase and was harassed by the workers there. That was 13.5 years ago and it still bothers me. I wrote a letter to the District Manager of the east coat to arrange a meeting with him to review the video surveillance tape as to why they did what they did to me. They said no!!! These are people whom may be telling their workers. or communicate in some way to profile their customers. Sad.

I experienced the same thing with a teller at a Chase Bank and she wouldn't cash my work check. Plus I had the funds in my account to cover it if she was that worried. I wrote a very detailed review about that location, management never responded to me. I went to another location and was treated much better. Sometimes the banks really need to look and train their workers properly. I used to work for a different bank sometime ago and we were given training on how to properly verify a check and we could deposit and get verification by escalating if necessary too. They would tell us what questions to ask and everything. But what you cant change is personal bias. Sad this successful doctor had to go through this. I hope she wins the case and the bank can improve and do better.

The bank tellers actions were deliberate. Given these tellers the unrestrained power to refuse service to anyone with justification. They wanted to humiliate this young doctor...without justification.

I know the feeling. I'm a business owner. I get large checks from several large companies with name recognition. I got tired of the stupid looks and questions. So I only deposit my checks in the atm or mobile banking. My bank allows 100k per month in mobile deposits. After that I use the atm.

This is a PR nightmare. The bank should have known that.

As a foreigner, I'm English, it strikes me that being paid by cheque is still a thing in the USA. Cheques (yeah, sorry we really do spell it like that) are rarely used over here. Wages etc are paid directly into employees' bank accounts by transfer.

This was deliberate racism. I experienced the same thing at a local credit union. It was only $4,500 and I have been a customer for over 10 years!

THAT MOMENT of THAT FEELING when you realize that you are being penalized, dismissed, discredited for reasons that are imaginary at best. The narrative that has been repeated about women who look like the doctor has been amplified by the "discomfort" of the tellers, to the point where chase has just lost any consideration for MY business as an artist. THAT FEELING of being on the receiving end of racism for invalid false reasons is not a good one for anyone to have. We have two children about the age of the doctor who are echoing that same things I endured as a photojournalist in the capitol city of the Show Me state back in the 80s. The first time it hits you it is a shock. Living with it day after day like our grandparents did, simply can no longer be tolerated. The behavior I endured in the work place in 2019 should have been over long before the 1980s, but I lost a job at a newspaper due to the poor team building skills of those who try to do less than substandard in the work place. All of you who have not had THAT FEELING as an employee or a customer, consider yourselves lucky. Please encourage those around you to give you a heads-up about who says what when people who look like you are not in the room. That is what you can do to help out young people who look like us. Let the people around you know they should encourage the people who are "uncomfortable" serving people at work based on skin tone. We know a standard of excellence on our worst days at work that we know now that 40% could never do as an imagined goal in their dreams, especially when it comes to manners and how we behave in the workplace and the job we agreed to do. THAT FEELING angered me so much, it was all I could do not to act upon things frowned upon in courts of law. The behavior was so blatant, I negotiated the settlement on my own with a clip in my brain. The exacerbated PTSD of the fury and despair is still a problem two years later. I hope she wins. Texas is dangerous these days. At the very least, those tellers should have been fired on the spot. The job of everyone at a bank is to take money when it walks through the door!!!!! I had this happen in Detroit at Bank of America reversed, I am white and tried to deposit my paycheck in a black run branch. The same branch I had opened my account with and had done business with for years, they KNEW me by first name basis. When I complained to the district manager things changed in a hurry, I was even offered a $100 dollar credit. I declined it and took my business and money elsewhere.

There is no such ting as a reputable bank anymore. Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America are now listed as the worst banks to do any business with. This is why I only use credit unions...

I am really disappointed, it must be a slow news day. This incident happens frequently with banks. It is their prerogative to ask questions and to verify certain deposits especially when it is large amount. There have been times when chase would call us just to make sure we authorized a purchase more than $2,000.

I hope she wins her law suit and they will payoff her college loans.
