Well done! I was on in a Skippers Course in 1979 on a 100 year old gaff rigged 65 feet Dutch sailing barge without a motor for 2 years. We went everywhere under sail and booming even through the big city of Amsterdam. The old (former seacaptain) Frans Eissenloeffel tought us to drop first all sail when coming alongside. Then he stopped the ship off with a line. We had an anchor ready aft to stop but never had to use it. When we came in we would drop the sails half or a third depending on the wind and one of us would pull the leach untill it caught enough wind. However when it was upwind you would use full sail untill you had enough way to catch the shore. But before we reached the quay the sails would be down. We had downhauls on the sails which were the end side off the falls. The sails were made of heavy cotton. He had more ships and told those without an engine made the least damage!
