Check out my reaction to Bojack Horseman: • DOCTOR REACTS TO BOJAC...
It's a Sin reviews: • DOCTOR REACTS TO IT'S ...
Let's do a Doctor Reacts video on Season 3 of Ted Lasso. This is the first of two videos I'm doing on Season 3 and as you'd expect, there is so much mental health content to discuss. We get to follow Nate's story of desperately wanting Ted to notice and appreciate him, a gay footballer at AFC Richmond, why Ted hates therapists (jusifiable so) & ayahuasca.
Let me know what you think!

Psychologist here. Ted Lasso really humanizes mental health disorders in a way similar to what Scrubs used to do. The major difference is that Ted Lasso keeps up the story lines, follows through and stays consistent yet human. As Bill Lawrence is associated with both shows, I would imagine that he is influential in this style. Another show of Bill Lawrence, Shrinking, does it in a bit different way though.

Van Gogh didn't create beautiful art because of his mental illness, he created beautiful art in SPITE of his mental iillness, because of the love and support he got through people in his life like his brother. i think that's the big change in narrative we're pushing for in the art world.

Personally, I do think mental illness can improve a person’s creative side. At least depression can. Many very good and creative people are depressed. If memory serves, Nier director Yoko Taro says his creativity comes from his endless negativity. Granted it’s worth noting his stories delve into horrifically disturbing, existential, and somewhat nihilistic themes. The Nier series alone features underage rape, genocide, suicide, the meaning of existence, and what defines humanity or sentience. It’s fucking great.

I cried watching the conversation between Colin and Trent as they sit at the memorial to LGBT people that were murdered during the Holocaust. I had wondered if Colin was gay after his “like Grindr” comment and I did suspect that Ted Lasso writers would want to include a storyline like this. When Colin talks about the ache for his two lives to be his only life and not wanting to be a spokesperson - I had such empathy. I also liked that they didn’t just have that story in one episode. I know a lot of people got annoyed that after the Amsterdam episode nothing was said for a couple of episodes - but I’m so glad that’s how they did it. It made it more real. I also fully enjoyed Rebecca’s arc in episodes 1 to Amsterdam episode as it flits back to old Rebecca being vs Rupert and then that gradual choosing to trust Ted again (thanks Keeley for guiding her friend and reminding her of thr right path) and realising Ted is right, she has won, and those words in Rupert’s ear to getting on that team bus singing Dont worry about a thing… it’s such a turning point. Also, I hope you’ll react to one of my most wishes for scenes… that we would get to meet Sam’s dad. The callback to the father & son interaction and tears at Wembley with Jamie’s dad vs Sam and Ola not to mention the little pulling on Sam’s ears which Sam told Ted his dad would do for luck way back at the beginning of season 1… 👨‍🍳 😘

More Ted! More ted! More ted! Longer videos. I could watch you talk about the mental health aspects (and football aspects) of Ted for hours.

My therapist shares some personal details with me. Sometimes just pleasantries, how a recent trip went, how her studies are going, her recent ADHD diagnosis, and sometimes examples of her life that help contextualizes the themes she's discussing with me during our sessions. Honestly, I love it. It helps me connect with her. Makes me feel less alone. Also, her self-disclosures are never more than a couple of minutes long, so it never feels like she's not monopolizing the conversation with her problems.

Thank you, I really enjoy your insightful commentaries. The confrontation between Colin and Isaac was an epiphany for me. I remembered how hurt I was when my best friend and roommate confided her queerness to a mutual friend (my boyfriend at the time), but not to me. Now finally, fifty years later I realized how hard it must have been for her to risk telling anyone, especially remembering the hell she went through with her parents. We are still best friends but living on different continents. I reached out to her the other day and apologized for putting my hurt feelings above hers. Bless her, she said she didn’t remember, but what a good talk we had!

Anthony Head does love to play unsavory characters. It always looks like he's having a great time creeping it up.

I just recently discovered your channel, and I love it. I lived most of my life with mental illness that went undiagnosed until my life collapsed about 17ish years ago. Basically, I have some trauma from my early teen years, ADHD, clinical depression and an Anxiety disorder. I've been working on myself and I'm doing a lot better. But I did have a major setback during Covid (I lost 3 friends during the early days of the disease). In any case, I love Ted Lasso. I think the character is a great role model for anyone.

Cognitive reframing is interesting. I think CBT and other therapies pin too much on it. In some situations (unrealistic perception) it might be appropriate, but it also risks ignoring real issues or patronising patients. Our modern world has genuine challenges, and acceptance seems more appropriate to a lot of those

Psilocybin is not a new technique or a new field of research in mental health treatment. Research started in the 60s and 70s until it was shut down by the war in drugs. Not sure the history of its usage “across the pond” but these medicinal techniques have also been used by humans for thousands of years.

Not so. I was referred by my psychiatrist to a psilocybin research project run by a well respected research facility near me just a few months ago.
