I love your enthusiasm for rheumatology. I just pray you keep that spirit. Too many rheumatologists in the US are so jaded and don't listen to their patients. I have been battling an undiagnosed issue for years. I finally got a rheumatology referral and was excited to go. I have a family history of autoimmune disorders and have all the classic vague symptoms. I spent about 20 minutes giving a thorough patient history and list of symptoms. He did a cursory physical exam, and then proceeded to tell me it was not rheumatological because my ANA was negative. He then, with a straight face, told me I may just have to learn to live with my symptoms without a diagnosis. That was it. I was stunned and disappointed.

A football helmet was once used on a patient in the emergency. He needed this procedure done and he was a football player who collapsed on the field and was rushed into the casualty. There was no helmet available in casualty, just the tubing. Patients relative suggested he go to the car and get his helmet which was used exactly like you did. It has become the accepted alternative to use in an emergency. Keep up with the videos. Love them. Thanks from Janet in South Africa.

As a "zebra" (I have a form of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) and premed student, I cannot help but feel excited about your choice of specialty. After years of chronic pain and other mysterious, seemingly unrelated symptoms (which were often dismissed stress-related, among other things), my rheumatologist was able to solve the mystery. Watching your content for the last few years has been so inspirational, and I am certain that you will be a force of good for so many patients.

A diversion here : The lead picture on this vid hits home for me. The last few minutes my Father, my age, threw up blood in the sink. He 🚬 and 🍸, always stressed. When Drs. Ask me what cause of death was I say, 'he threw up blood in the sink.' This is why I'm obsessed with sustenance. Never squared what the actual cause was. Thank you for the 'Ask the Doctor' presentation. Siobhan, be safe n' be well!

Hi Siobhan. I love that I came across your channel. I am pursuing med school and also graduated from IU as well. And the craziest thing about this video is I met Mauricio and his wife as I helped take care of him as a patient of mine in the ED. This kind of came full circle because his wife had asked me if I was a doctor or planned to go to medical school, and then said that I need to study with Mauricio because he has had many students of his go on to med school. What a small world this is and what a coincidence I came across both of you.

Thank you for going into Rheumatology. I've been seeing one every since I was a year old. It's a doctor that most patients have to drive far to see, either because of insurance or because there just isn't one near by. I know that Pediatric Rheumatologist are really needed and often even harder to see because of distance and there's not alot of them. When I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatold Arthritis at the age of 18 months back in 1977, my parents drove and an hour to the biggest city for treatment. I also remember getting blood work and x-rays there as well. I've heard of kids who have had to drive a couple hours one way if they lived really far from a big city, We didn't get a local Rheumatologist who would see a child until 10 years later. Even till this day there's only one Rheumatologists in a town of 96,000 people but she is out of network, my in network doctor is an hour away. I would say out of the many Rheumatologists that I've seen through out my life about three of them I've felt really happy with and they've all been women, again that's just my experience. I've have awful experiences with male Rheumatologists, don't know why. Again, thank you going into this specialty. I would love to have you as my doctor. Any child would too.

I am so glad I found this vlog. Seeing someone so dedicated to the medical profession and such a caring, positive person makes me hopeful for the future. Being in the USA means we are not very aware of what differences exist between US & Canada re: medical training. I spent 47 years in a hospital Lab with specialty in Blood Banking and we had very little actual interaction with the physicians. I have always thought that patients would be better off if all departments worked as more of a team. Thanks again for your awesome videos.

Hey Siobhan, since you have had time in internal medicine I was curious if you've ever had a patient with Dysautonomia? I have "general Dysautonomia"; POTS, IST, OI, NCS. Here in the US there are only a few medical schools that teach about this autonomic disorder so finding a doctor who has ever heard about it is like finding a needle in a haystack. I have found the only doctors that have heard of it tend to be in internal medicine. Thank you for the life saving work you do! Stay safe on the front lines.

Dr. Adam Hotchkiss I love that! I wish I had a great rheumatologist near me in the Bay Area. Haven’t had much luck finding one that seems to actually care about me 😭

It's actually been seven years since she started medical school, assuming medical school is four years long in Canada 4 years of medical school 3 years of internal medical residency And now she is in her 1st year of a two year long rheumatology fellowship

@@krabbypatty1962 You require an undergraduate degree before attending grad school - medicine, dentistry, law are all grad schools. Most students who are considering a health related career take a pre-med science degree. There are also a few students who took arts related courses and graduated with a BA that decide they wish to pursue a medical degree. If you had great grades and did well in the MCAT (or whatever course the various schools require) your chances are just as good as the science grads.

No way!! You studied with Mauricio ! I am a pianist but I remember accompanying and meeting a lot of his students when he was doing masterclasses in France. We must know so many musicians in common. He is the most delightful man and I learnt so much from him not only about violin but about great musicianship ❤️ !
