It's funny to see that, despite all the mature well crafted movies these two have watched, they are still watching movies with the sensibilities of twenty year olds. They fell for every single hackneyed o.p. moment, every deus ex machina enthralled them, all the poorly written call-backs delighted them. But it's not just from being 20. Nearly everyone, who likes Dr. Sleep as a sequel, fails to understand Kubrick's Shining. Trying to use Kubrick's film as a template for a King sequel is like trying to set a modern story in the 1700s, complete with characters using smart phones and cars. It just doesn't work, except for the ignorant.

Interesting little anecdote, apparently during the baseball torture scene, the kid was fine but the adult actors (especially the woman who played hat) were deeply traumatized by doing that scene, to the point where the shoot had to be stopped for a full hour to allow her to regain her composure, and ironically the kid actor ended up comforting her until they were ready to go again, then lay back down on the dirt with a smile assuring her he was fine.
@MrLeFluffy1
@MrLeFluffy1 Жыл бұрын
I absolutely believe that - that kid was _astonishly_ good in that scene. I myself was traumatized by his screams when I first saw the movie - he truly, _truly_ sounded like he was dying, and dying in _pain._ I'm still awed by how convincing that kid was. To actually be there, seeing that kid covered in (fake) blood, screaming like that, directly in your face? Yeah, I'd need to take breaks, too!

Rebecca Ferguson who played Rose the Hat said in an interview she was physically ill and the Jacob Tremblay was squealing with laughter and ran off to craft service after and was eating a PB&J and kept putting the strawberry jelly on his tongue and sticking it out to mess with her! Rose The Hat is so much creepier in the book, especially when she turns in her vampire form. We never see their "real" vampire appearances in the movie. What I really like about this movie is that it is an adaption of both the sequel novel and the first movie. Kubrick's movie was great but it so far from the novel, especially the whole Shining thing, that it feels like it has nothing to do with it at times. But this movie respects both versions.

It isn't going to be a Kubrick film, it wasn't going to be, it can't be, and it's fine. This film is a master piece in its own right that I think will have a cult following in the years to come. Several years later when I heard they was I got super excited. My wife an I saw it on opening weekend and my God I was enthralled the whole time. The actors who took the place of Scatman Crothers and Shelley Duvall are really damn good. The Directors Cut is way better and I do like the ending a lot more. I previously thought the ending of the book is far superior and explains a bit more. But...watching it with you, I understand a bit more. Danny and Wendy, who couldn't look at each other(Wendy because Danny had Jack's eyes and Danny because Wendy was covered in flies from her sickness)finally look into each others eyes. The part about Danny being able to see when a person is sick is in the book because of his shine. He saw his mother was going to die of cancer, but it was too late. He also sees Billy with flies on him as well, but because he catches it early, Billy is treated. At one point, he takes in Abra's grandmothers cancer into himself and sees flies on his own face(see below for more on that). The True Knot start dying at a fast rate after they take the steam from the "Baseball Boy", who had measles(because of their longevity, they didn't have resistance to such things, which is why Grandpa Flick dies after so long)and they believe Abra's steam will cure them, which adds to the reason of why they need her so badly. Billy is also revealed to have a bit of Shining to him, which is why he feels it's right to hire Danny. Danny is revealed to be Abra's uncle(Jack had an affair with Abra's grandmother, meaning that Abra's mom is his half sister). Abra's grandmother is dying of cancer, which Danny absorbs into himself and feeds to the rest of the True Knot, which rapidly kills them. Billy and Abra's father survive and they just use the last of the remaining ghosts, of which only Horace Derwent("Great party, isnt it?")was left(the ghosts slowly weakened and disappear over time) to deal with the last of Rose's crew, who's an assassin who makes herself invisible with her "shine", while they psychically battle Rose, with Rose being pushed off the Overlook's balcony with the help of Jack's spirit, which gives him redemption). Abra reveals she has a lot of buried rage similar to Jack's own, which Danny tries to help her with. Danny also finally tells his AA group about the girl he left and her child, only for everyone in the group to accept him, which also brings it full circle.

Since King doesn't like Kubrick's film, the director asked his permission to make references to that film. As a result, the ending is very different from the book. For instance, the Overlook blew up at the end of the The Shining book. So, the ending of the Doctor Sleep book doesn't take place there.

One thing you seemed confused by was the flashback when young Danny went into the bathroom and was looking in the mirror. He said later that his mother couldn't look in his eyes because she saw his dad in them, so he changed them. Before that, Danny's eyes were brown, he changed them to blue. I noticed it at the time, but I didn't understand why that happened until he explained it later that he changed it so she wouldn't see his dad in him when she looked at him.

Hey guys! I so much appreciate that you came and watch the sequel so close after you've watched the original. This is SO underrated movie, it pretty much bombed in the box office when it came out because of bad timing and the time passed after "The Shining". I watched it alone in the cinema cause my then gf was not in the country and I was thinking some time before the end (as I've read the book and knew how much time approximately there's left) "Why the F did my second beer is over, was I drinking faster than usual?", cause usually I get to drink two beers during a movie. After I went out of the cinema, I checked and discovered it (the theatrical version) was 2 1/2 hours long. I was in awe. Really, really underrated movie with some great visuals, great story and fantastic acting. Especially Rebecca Ferguson (Rose "the Hat") just blew me away with her performance. So happy that you've enjoyed it too and I had to re-live it through your reaction. Cheers!

Such a great movie. And to add a little spooky to the mix, my mom used to be a nurse at a nursing home. She often told stories about a cat being seen by patients who were soon to die. Until I saw this movie, always thought it was just a localized legend, but I’m guessing it’s a folklore around enough that even Stephen King was aware of it.

A great sequel and companion to the book and film The Shining. Dick Hallorann tells Danny that “shining” is, at its core, a fusion of telepathy and clairvoyance. Being able to shine means being able to communicate with others using the mind, and gives people the ability to see things that have happened in the past, or will happen in the future. There’s also no major revelation about the connection between Dan and Abra in the movie. In the book, when Dan goes to visit Concetta (book character) , he learns that Abra’s mother is none other than Jack Torrance’s daughter. Yes, the book’s version of Dan and Abra’s mom are half-siblings, which means that the character that Abra chooses to call “Uncle Dan” really is, well, Uncle Dan. This fact might have made it easier to understand why Abra and Dan maintain such a firm connection, and possibly even suggest that shining powers are hereditary

Strange film, in-so-far it is both a semi-sequel to both the book and the film, at the same time...despite their inconsolable differences with plot. It's a good film, but honestly...I would have cried if they had use the likeness and voices of the original cast. Speaking of crying...a little factoid; When filming the scene of the True Knot torturing the Baseball Boy, the actor's screams were so realistic, it caused the whole cast and crew to cry afterwards, and constant takes, due to them asking if he was OK. A very respectable film (during unrespectable times) a well-crafted dark fantasy, which genre has been sorely missing since the 80s!

I could tell when Wendy goes into the bathroom and see's the wet footprints on the bathmat. That scene was not in the theatrical. You get so much more development and amazing dialogue in this version. Oh. When young Danny is looking in the mirror and you asked what happened: Danny changed what color people perceive his eyes to be. He turned them blue because his mom would see his father Jack in his eyes and he didn't want her to feel that pain anymore when she looked at him.

In the original novel of The Shining, the hotel blew up from the boiler and Dick survived. So, when King wrote the sequel, Doctor Sleep, the ending would be different. Such a great movie! It mixes themes from Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of the first Shining and Stephen King’s original book, as the book and first film were quite different in some parts. The sequel is a great balance. And rare in Stephen King’s world as he never does sequels to his books. Interestingly enough, as great as it is, the movie Doctor Sleep didn’t do well at the box office due in large part because people didn’t realize it was a sequel to The Shining. The name Doctor Sleep threw them off and didn’t sound appealing to them. It’s something that as a horror fan really bums me out. It deserved its time to shine (pardon the pun) in packed theaters. I was one of those that saw it in the big screen and can attest there were many vacant seats. I’m so happy you gave it a chance and enjoyed it. It is one that is getting more eyeballs on it now upon word of mouth. It’s just a shame many missed out on it when it hit theaters. Love your channel and your horror reactions! Much love to you two! Btw, the Director’s Cut is definitely worth a watch! It’s even better!
