The Shining is one of the greatest horror movies of all time, so releasing a sequel nearly 40 years later is quite the ballsy move. We're going to go over what worked, what didn't, and figure out what happened to Mike Flanagan's Doctor Sleep, with Kyliegh Curran and Ewan McGregor.
Written, Narrated and Edited by Tyler Nichols
Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols
Executive Producer: Berge Garabedian
WATCH OR OWN THE FILM HERE: amzn.to/3z1MfsW
SERIES SYNOPSIS: "WTF Happened To This Unmade Horror Movie" takes a look at the various horror projects that could never seem to get things off the ground, be it for budgetary concerns, creative differences, or just an ever evolving Hollywood landscape. We dive into every aspect and see just how close these films had come to cameras rolling

This movie was better than it had any right being. You don't just make a sequel to The shining and not expect some scrutiny, but I walked away impressed. In fact, I would call it one of the better horror movies in recent years.

@@bz7661 I really enjoyed Hereditary and I love A24 in general, but Doctor Sleep was incredibly personal to me and, in my opinion, continued the story of The Shining in the best way possible even with its deviations from King’s book (that it, of course, did have to do to be a true sequel to Kubrick’s masterpiece original film).

I had just finished reading "The Shining" when the 1980 film came out. I was so hyped to see it and was so underwhelmed and disappointed. For years I never told folks I didn't care for the Kubrick film because I figured I just didn't get it since it was immediately heralded as a modern horror classic. I've watched it over the years and am still "meh" on it. I blame the casting. Jack and Wendy are so NORMAL in the book that the slow descent they both fall into is truly horrifying as the story unfolds. Jack Nicholson is a great actor but from frame one he already seemed unstable. Poor Shelley Duvall was pretty much relegated to playing a spineless church mouse (far removed from the sunny version in the book). When "Doctor Sleep" came out, I was impressed with both book and film.

@@koala201211 Short Answer; Social engineering is why. Studies show women are not loyal to their "group", we seen this with French women in WW2 marrying NAZI occupiers. The liberal myth of the "sexually liberated woman" from the 60s' to today has been a failure for women, but a boon for the elite who use them as pawns to destroy western civilization (break down of the family unit). Hollywood elites put this type of propaganda in the minds of young women to desensitize and normalize this abhorrent behavior. Pick up a book sometimes, you'll be amazed by the things you learn.

I don't think people truly comprehend what a perfect balancing act this film manages to pull off. It somehow takes modern horror elements and Flanagan's directorial style and blends them with the more surreal, stylized elements of Kubrick's 'Shining' in a way that doesn't feel like they're at odds with one another and leaves the sequel still feeling like its own thing, finds a way to integrate the hotel into the story (the Overlook never makes an appearance in the 'Doctor Sleep' novel) in a way that doesn't feel like mere fanservice, but makes complete sense and plays into the ending seamlessly, *and* it even managed to get the blessing of the original film's biggest critic, Stephen King, despite it borrowing so much from the Kubrick version. Danny even completes Jack's redemption arc from the original novel by sacrificing himself to save Abra in the film, something that King heavily criticized the original film for not including. The fact that this movie not only exists but is as astonishingly good as it is, with everything coming together in a way that never feels forced or out of place, is a plain miracle, and a major testament to Mike Flanagan's skill and care as a director. I sometimes hear people describe 'Doctor Sleep' as "mid," but considering what a monumental train wreck this film *should* have been I'd say that's pretty darn impressive in of itself.

It wasn't a TERRIBLE film; I just didn't care. Turned characters into supernatural superheroes. It implies a "King-verse" I'm not interested in. But really, it wasn't made by Kubrick or by a director who shares his sensibilities. I think it can be summed up - generally - like this: the people who liked "Sleep" are more King fans than Kubrick fans, and the people who didn't like it are the reverse.

I really liked it. Some say the nostalgia bits were a bit too much but I ate it up man! I loved all the new directions the story takes but all the Overlook stuff had me hyped.

That took a lot of cajones to wear that Apollo sweater in front of King lol

I absolutely love this movie. I didn’t think it was possible to marry King and Kubrick’s versions and make a faithful adaptation to the book but damn does Mike Flanagan pull it off. The man is a genius. I think some people expected it to be like the original but if they had read the book, they would have known it was an entirely different type of story. And the True Knot is freaking terrifying

I like Dr Sleep more than the Shining. It was a great movie. The villains were great especially Rose the hat. It was entertaining and Ewan was phenomenal. The little black girl was excellent. That scene where they torture and kill that kid was straight out of a nightmare. Such an underrated movie.

Can't help but think one reason they cast Henry Thomas was that he has experience playing an iconic horror character that's synonymous with the original actor. Thomas was cast as a young Norman Bates in the underrated Psycho IV: The Beginning and did a damn fine job.

Henry's a great actor and has been in a number of the director's (Mike Flanagan) projects.

Just saw it tonight. It was good! I can't remember anything I've seen from Mike Flanagan that wasn't awesome.

I always thought that David Harbour would be great to play Jack Torrance if they ever remade the Shining
