The thing about Missy not getting a final goodbye with 12, is that she died with the intention to help the doctor without him knowing. She died without witness, without hope, and without reward.

I think she intentionally grabbed the doctor's hand so he could feel that small palm sized blade so he would know she had changed without letting Simm's master know. If you listen closely when she shakes his hand you can clearly hear a loud "metal on skin" clap! 12:53

The tragedy of this episode is that, for all of the happily ever afters and fulfilled character arcs WE got to see, Twelve didn’t. Missy redeemed herself and he doesn’t know. Bill was revived and found her old water girlfriend, and he has absolutely no idea. He wakes up in the TARDIS wondering how he isn’t dead. And for him that’s the end of the story. Missy betrayed him, Bill is doomed to be consumed by the cyber-technology. His final stance was futile in his eyes. That is his burden to bear. This episode is absolutely magnificent.

I think it's her afterlife because we see her as a Cyberman dying, but I think she physically died and only spiritually survived because of Heather. Just like Heather is technically dead, but "alive" because of the Alien water thingy in her. In my mind Bill dies on this episode, and that seems to be confirmed by the... glass people whatever they are. Capaldi's finest moment. This story sums up Peter Capaldi's Doctor so well. To me, he is the ultimate incarnation of the Doctor, embodying everything the Doctor has ever been and yet still brings across his own style. The speech he delivers was written for HIM, and, like 'Heaven Sent', there are only a few Doctors who could have articulated a speech like this so well with no music, and he's one of them. He’s not showing off, he’s just asking his old friend(s) for help and desperately trying to find the good in them, and Capaldi delivers his best performance. If David Tennant and Matt Smith felt like Doctors you could become best pals with, Capaldi's felt like a Doctor you could look up to and respect as a hero.
@suncore5985 жыл бұрын
"If David Tennant and Matt Smith felt like Doctors you could become best pals with, Capaldi's felt like a Doctor you could look up to and respect as a hero." That was perfectly put.
@petersvillage74475 жыл бұрын
I've felt something similar - I'm never going to say anybody is 'the best Doctor', but to me Capaldi felt like The Complete Doctor - almost as if this is him, all that he is, and some of the other incarnations were costumes he'd put on...
@antoniochasten31925 жыл бұрын
@@petersvillage7447 Same. Capaldi dresses like his Doctor in real life and I know he personally believes in being as nice and as kind as you can to people. Every fan that meets him always talks about how funny and nice he is. I haven't heard one bad report of a fan meeting Capaldi. He took the time to write a 9 yr old a handwritten letter because the boy was sad Capaldi was leaving the show. The guy was visiting Children's Hospitals for months and didn't want the BBC or the hospitals to leak it out that he was visiting because it wasn't about that for him. "He does what he does because it's right, because it's decent and above all it's kind. It's just that. Just kind." The lines blur with the 12th Doctor and Peter Capaldi.
@petersvillage74475 жыл бұрын
@@antoniochasten3192 When Capaldi started in the role I was slow to warm to him, but always thought the quality of his performance was undeniable. But there soon came a point where, for me, he'd entirely occupied the role. I began to find myself wondering if I thought he was the very best... and I'm against the idea of selecting any as 'the best', just because... Hartnell is the godfather... and Troughton is amazing... and Tom Baker IS The Doctor, and so on - they all of them have their claim on the title. The way I ultimately saw it, though, was... Capaldi showed as the very heart of the character, like this is all of who the Doctor has always been, and he never quite showed it before. I've since realised this coincides with Vastra's lines in 'Deep Breath' where she suggests that the Doctor was finally showing Clara who he really was because he trusted her enough to let his guard down... but also the idea that Capaldi's Doctor returns to a number of times, that he's not really 'The Doctor' - he's actually somebody that we don't necessarily know, who has become caught up in living up to the high expectations of others who see him as 'The Doctor'. I suspect this take on the character may come from the experience of being a parent - of having somebody in your life who expects you to solve every problem and know ever answer, and feeling you have to live up to those expectations whatever your feelings on the matter.
@antoniochasten31925 жыл бұрын
@@petersvillage7447 I'd agree. Your comment reminds me of another line from "The Witch's Familiar" during the Doctor/Davros convo. 12 says "There is no such thing as the Doctor. I'm just a bloke in a box. Telling stories. And I didn't come here because I was ashamed. A bit of shame never hurt anyone. I came because you were sick and you asked. And because sometimes, on a good day, if I try very hard...I'm not some old TIme Lord who ran away. I'm the Doctor."

Missy's ending is the culmination the lines from Extremis: Without Hope, without Witness, without Reward. She chose to do what was right alone and died for it. I absolutely love her ending. This epsiode is absolute perfection. It's so beautiful and melancholy. I cried almost throughout. I loved Bill's ending too. I guessed in episode 1 that Heather would come back for her in the finale. Bill always seemed to represent Hope and that she loses it when she asks to die in this episode was heartbreaking, and I think she cries over the Doctor's body as much for herself (because the Doctor can't fulfill his promise to help her die) than the Doctor's death. She really does through the ringer in the Finale 2 parter and Heather is that last bit of Hope. I could talk about this epsiode all day but my thumbs will likely fall off!

The last scene with Missy and Twelve might have something which can change everything: when Missy grabs the hand of the Doctor. The first time I watched I thought "oh, that’s an unusual way to grab someone's hand". BUT then I saw on the Internet a very good theory: she does that so the Doctor can feel the knife. She made him knew that she had to knock out the (other) Master before anything. Also, when the Doctor says that he doesn't want to regenerate makes me think about his first episode (again a saw this on the Internet, but I think you really should know it). In his first episode, when he says all the stuff about changing the stick and the brush. I think that his opinion about regeneration was already clear just after Eleven.

@@alexcooke4856 I think it's more than that. Moffat gets a lot of undeserving crap. Yeah, he gets in his own way sometimes but there were alot of times the BBC shot down ideas that I thought were good. Like the one where we were suppose to get Victorian Clara. I was excited because I've been wanting a companion from the past to travel with the Doctor. The BBC nixed the idea because they wanted a 21st century companion so we got Modern Clara. Moffat wanted to bring back some of the old companions for the 50th but the BBC nixed that idea. Moffat did try to get Eccleston to return but that was on Eccleston turning it down and not the Beeb so I can't blame them for that one. But with him turning it down, we got the wonderful War Doctor played by John Hurt. Moffat wanted to do a full length one hour special with the Eighth Doctor but the Beeb shot that down so we get a shitty six minute mini sode with 8 instead. Shitty in length not the actual production. I appreciated it but come on now. How awesome would a full one hour Night of the Doctor with Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor would've been?

I really like the distinction between 12's refusal to regenerate and 10's refusal to do so. 10 was just kind of arrogant and in love with himself, to the point that he didn't want to give it up and regenerate into someone else. 12, on the other hand, is just tired. He's lost everybody that he had close to him, he failed (as far as he knows) to make an impact on Missy, and he's just had enough of it all. He doesn't just not want to stop being 12, he just doesn't want to keep living at all.

Remember, by the end of his life, as he was regenerating, he was doing so for (as far as he knew) the last time, after only six years, after having already wasted a regeneration to remain in that form, after only six years for a being that has lived for centuries, after having lost the closest thing to a known romantic relationship he had up to that point, after having his own daughter die just as peace was made between Humanity and the Hoth, after having effectively killed Donna and condemned her to return to her previous life, wracked with guilt after intervening to try to prevent the Kotturuh and the death of Adelaide Brooke, after having just solidified Donna's own loss, after just condemning (in his eyes) his entire race, a group that despite their radicalisation during the WiH/LGTW was still mourned by him, to death in the final moments of the Time War once again, after having just failed to save his former best friend, and with no real accomplishments he could reflect on in the same vein as other incarnations. I don't blame him for being reluctant.

For those who are curious, there are many references to Classic Who in this episode: SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! "- The Doctor recounts his various victories over the Cybermen: on Telos where he sealed them in their ice tombs, (The Tomb of the Cybermen, Second Doctor), Voga (Revenge of the Cybermen, Fourth Doctor), Canary Wharf (Army of Ghosts / Doomsday, Tenth Doctor, New Who), Planet 14. (The Invasion, Second Doctor) , the Moon (The Moonbase, Second Doctor). - The Doctor has a brief recall of some of his past companions from his ninth incarnation onwards, just before his body attempts to regenerate. The Fourth and Fifth Doctor similarly had this occur to him. Like with the Fifth Doctor, the last face he sees is the Master's. - When waking up after his pre-regeneration flashbacks, the Doctor says "Sontarans! Perverting the course of human history!". They were the first words of the Fourth Doctor after regenerating. (Robot) He previously said the same thing after waking up from being knocked out by flying objects due to air pressure. (Listen) - The Doctor and Bill both recite the line "where there's tears, there's hope" at different points. A similar line, "while there's life, there's hope," served as the final words of the Third Doctor, while trying to console a crying Sarah Jane Smith. (Planet of the Spiders). - The Twelfth Doctor, and later the First Doctor, describe themselves as "the Doctor, the original you might say." The First Doctor previously said this exact phrase to Tegan Jovanka. (The Five Doctors)." Source: The Doctor Who Wiki.

Responding to your last Classic Who spoiler: First scene of the Fourth Doctor had him saying pretty much the same thing as both First and Twelfth Doctors. It is actual a snippet on KZfaq over at the Doctor Who channel: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gZlziruiute0dnU.html

Also 3's last words were "a tear Sarah Jane, now don't cry. While there's life there's..." which I've always felt was very close to "while there's tears there's hope"

We also never physically see Simm regenerate into Gomez. Some people have suggested that there are more incarnation(s) in between the two. The lines "I imagine you're the next one along, then? / Oh, I think so. I'm a bit hazy on the whole regeneration thing" definitely leave open that possibility.

Moffat really outdid himself with this two-parter in my opinion. It's an incredible piece of storytelling and your reaction was pure gold, Jess, as were your final comments. It makes me so happy to know you've grown to love the Twelfth Doctor so much. That moment at 11:27 perfectly encapsulates why he's my absolute favorite, and I'll never not miss him. Next week it's getting even more emotional, so we all will be here with you! :)

A delightful reaction. There are so many "wait till she sees" moments in this episode. I thought you'd be more set-off by the "when the doctor was me" reference to 11 but there was so much going on. The crying Cyber-Bill gets to me every time. The Dr is left not knowing Bill is freed or that Missy took his side at the end then he sees his younger self walking through the snow. It was a bit of bad day all round. Onwards to Christmas! (aka next week).

I think the character of the Master per se, does die in the form of Missy. It is all the more significant because most of the Master's previous incarnations have been obsessed with prolonging their lives by extending their regeneration cycle. The fact that John Simm's Master kills his own future regeneration when he learns that a future version of his will stand with the Doctor should be a definitive ending to the Master's character, because that is the one thing that would ultimately drive him to stop prolonging his life and kill himself. Any other version we see in the future (Sacha Dhawan) can be fitted between John Simm and Missy, as long as Missy gets to be the Master's last incarnation.

This Doctor Who episode is one of those I have watched over and over again. It's one of my favourites. And the Christmas episode that follows is even better. So I'm looking forward to seeing the next reaction to that one. The good thing about Doctor Who is that it delivers a variety of emotions. Laughter, sorrow, shocks and terrors that get children demanding their parents move the sofa away from the wall, so as to hide behind. Great reaction 👏👍.

You are so close, it's unreal! Not long now until Thirteen comes falling into your life like she has ours! Aaahhh!!! This finale overall is my favourite since season 5. I understand your thoughts on Missy not having a goodbye with Twelve, but I love the tragedy of the Doctor never knowing that she was prepared to stand alongside him. It's utterly heart-wrenching. The rest of the episode was solid, emotional drama and the perfect set up for Twelve's swan song. I do think you'll love his final moments. They sum up Capaldi's take on the character perfectly. But first, the Christmas special! Guest starring The Original, the First Doctor himself!!

So wonderful to read of all the love people have for Capaldi in the comments. He is my favourite modern Doctor, and is up there with Tom Baker. Always be kind!

12's regeneration speech isn't the "overall best" in my opinion. 12's my fave doc and I wasn't even sad when he was delivering it. Without giving too much away, It felt more like a pep talk and with the music choice they went with..it made it feel inspiring and victorious. I still say, for me at least, his anti war speech from "The Zygon Inversion" is arguably his most emotional, powerful and overall best. And knowing Capaldi nailed that speech in one take makes it even more amazing.

That “be kind” speech is honestly my favorite speech from 12. It’s really moving and powerful and shows that no matter how hopeless the situation he’s in is,he will keep trying to save people even if it’s without hope, without witness, and without reward. And you can see the desperation on him as he tries to get the masters to help. And unknowing to the Doctor his speech affected missy as she later decided to join the Doctor but died without hope, without witness, and without reward. Really sad
@marknorth89045 жыл бұрын
Actually, Missy did get her reward. She stabbed John Simm's Master in the hip area. Missy realized that Simm's Master was manic again, and couldn't let his incarnation live any longer...
