@@jacobhogan3208 there are parts of Cape Town that look authentically American, as construction designs and even materials were bought on the cheap from the US after the Second World War. Owing to the segregation that was prevalent in both countries at the time as well, the infrastructure still has a lot of leftover inspirations from that era too. They also made use of the South African visit to film previous episode The Ghost Monument, so they got their practical moneys worth. The current Series 12 did the same, filming in South Africa for scenes that double as the US, Australia, Madagascar, and Peru. It's quite common for destinations to double as other places in Doctor Who. Spain is the obvious one. It was used in Series 7 went to Almería to double as the American West and the Dalek asylum exteriors, Series 8 used Lanzarote to appear as the moon, Series 9 used the Spanish islands to pass as Gallifrey and Skaro, Series 10 used Valencia for a futuristic city, Series 11 used Almería for India/Pakistan, and Series 12 returned to Lanzarote for the futurist holiday resort. Series 5 used Croatia to double as Venice and also Van Gogh's France. Series 6 filmed in Utah and this helped reduce the cost of production as BBC America provided the cameras etc. Series 7 used New York, but it's appearances in Series 10 (Return of Doctor Mysterio) and Series 12 (Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror) both used the same purpose-built sets which are actually in Bulgaria. :)

Yeah, this is only the second time in well over 800 episodes that the Doctor Who theme doesn't play through the end credits. The first time was in _Earthshock_ part 4 (1982) in which the end credits were completely silent. On that occasion it was due to the shock ending with the second ever companion death.

To each their own. I believe Rosa to be one the absolute worst episode of the entire show (I even prefer Fear Her, Love and Monsters, In the Forest of the Night; Sleep No More or Tsuranga Conundrum over Rosa)... and I like series 11 (Demons, ITYA and Witchfinders are great episodes)... but for me, Rosa is just dreadful... and the worst thing is, it could have been great, but the vilain killed it all for me... It doesnt happen often, very rarely even, but here, we have the perfect exemple (again, IMO !!!! this is very important, this is subjective) of how one small detail can ruin an otherwise decent story : the vilain... just that... that vilain immediately ruined the episode for me.

When I learned the subject matter of this episode, I was very nervous. Would Dr. Who play around with the history, would they rob Rosa of her agency? Now that I know they did things right, I can relax and enjoy the episode. I would also say that while I am gratified the Blind Wave guys were horrified by the way people treated and spoke to people of color in this episode, I have a feeling the language in this episode was actually toned down a bit. You wouldn't have an angry white man or an annoyed waitress in that place and time saying "negro" or "colored" or "Mexican"... they'd be using a different N word or other stronger pejoratives.

Episode was definitely an injustice to Rosa and whole series. Similar to Demons ot the Punjab - this episode lacks a lot of stuff other historical episodes had. It is kinda not fully correct with depiction of history, but most importantly it is not a Doctor Who episode. It was cute educational video about Rosa, but main plot was fully disconnected from the rest of the episode. Main villain was idiotic and unnecessary, just making episode worse. And "fam" pretty much were just spectators, and not even good ones. What they should have done in this episode was to scrap out whole future villain bs. Then they should have made our crew actually feck up history - to the point where some major changes in history impact our characters or something. Then the scene in the bus where they had to take empty spaces would be way more impactful, as it was them who fecked it up, and it was them who should have been the "bad guys" - silent observers of Rosa's actions. Also it would be actually more fun if all of it impacted our characters. Especially for Ryan - it could have been really good character growth arc. And where is historical clothing, again?
@mjm3091
@mjm3091 4 жыл бұрын
@@tylerbailey9329 would they though? It was still a very popular word like 10-15 years ago. And it is not worse than the stuff that is actually shown in TV. I mean if families can watch Jesus get crucified, I feel like they would survive a N-word in episode about racist history or US. They could always add warning at the beginning. It would probably take even more from the main focus of the episode, though.
@tylerbailey9329
@tylerbailey9329 4 жыл бұрын
@@mjm3091 it's just that nowadays the N word has been tabood to the point of being more offensive than something like "fuck". If they had peppered it throughout the episode it would have meant a complete departure in genre from being a "family" show. At the end of the day, I do think the concept of "bad" words is entirely preposterous, but I would never expect Doctor Who to boldly hit their audience with curse words and slurs out of the blue.

" no one was willing to discuss like adults or accept the fact that the Doctor is now a woman" Uh huh. Cool story bro. Most of the angry fans (me included) were actually eager to see what the change brings. Missy was the perfect example of a gender change done right. It wasn't shouted from the rooftops with bullshit propaganda messages that "It's about time" and breaking the glass ceiling. And when it arrived it was absolute horseshit. Boring scripts, no good villains, three companions that are absolutely useless and the show would turn out the exact same way without them (except Graham his grief arc and his relationship with Ryan was the most interesting thing in the entire season mind you), a new composer that makes forgettable music (I literally cannot recognize the Doctor's theme or anything else he made up until today) and it's full of in-your-face leftist propaganda shit. Not presenting a political dilemma or a question to make you think about stuff. Oh nono. The TELL YOU what to think and if you don't agree with their one-sided portrayal then: YOU HATE WOMEN. Case in point your comment. Or of course if you did not like the Rosa episode's way of telling the story: YOU ARE RACIST because only racists will not like this. And then after telling you guys why we are angry and we get answers like: Look at the angry mysoginist/racist/bigot manbabies crying about a BRAVE EMPOWERED WOMAN finally taking the role of the Doctor. I'm really happy to see everyone enjoy what this episode does. The season is very different but there's nothing wrong with that, and sometimes you might even enjoy it more than what you previously had which seems to be the case with Shane, at least on this one. And like Calvin says at 24:44 this feels very Classic Who, and trying to pretend that this is new territory for the show is, I think, lowkey disrespectful to its history. And being dismissive of what it's telling you is also disrespectful to history in general, even. VERY excited to see them get to Episode 6 now.

I feel like they misused Rosa Parks in this episode. They played it like her protest was a matter of circumstance as opposed to the careful months of planning and resilience. And Krasko is such a nothing villain, nothing that connects him to Rosa Parks in any significant way. Eg, Vincent and the Doctor had an alien that only Vincent could see, playing into his mental health issues and his position as an outsider in the community. Dickens had ghosts, Christie had a murder mystery, Shakespeare had witches with the power of words. Rosa Parks had... Just a racist guy. Would have been nice to see an opponent more thematically relevant to her specifically than just some guy.

@@AnnekeOosterink apparently Rosa's actions were kind of circumstantial; she was among four people who were told to give up their seats when the 'white' section filled and the bus driver removed the 'coloured' sign, the other three people left their seats but Rosa suddenly decided to refuse. Her supporters actually stayed up all night after her arrest hastily making flyers telling people to boycott buses, in order to capitalize on her sudden actions; Rosa was arrested on Thursday and the boycott wasn't properly organized until the following Monday after it was announced in Sunday church services, lasting 381 days. Who else would a racist guy go after other than Rosa Parks, if he was looking for a target? Though in my unofficial head cannon, the Doctor came away thinking 'why do they always go after an unrelated historical figure for no good reason, it's like the clockwork droids and Madame du Pompadour all over again' (s/he never knew :( )

@@mekonta See now that would have been good. Because it would show that in the greater scheme of things hatred forms a self-sustaining, repeatative cycle. It would also show that no one is free of the flawed nature of humanity. That no one is incapable of falling into bigoted mindsets just because of who they are, what they've been through, etc. But will we never see that, because as this episode shows, the political message they're working with doesn't think men are anything else. The only reason Graham is given a pass is because his life is defined by a black woman, and the only reason women are excused from the virulent racism or capability to be evil is "because women" essentially.

Personally, while I think they handled the setting and Rosa herself very well, I still think the plot point of "Racist from Thousands of Years in the future comes back to stop Rosa Park from taking a stand against segregation in order to prevent equality and civil rights from happening" is dumb as hell. That racism still exists that far in the future is one thing, and I have no problem believing that honestly. The thing that I find dumb, though, is: A) The implication that, somehow, without Rosa Parks doing exactly what she did, exactly when she did it, in exactly the way history tells us she did, the Civil Rights movement just... doesn't happen. Like all the other leaders and every other black person in America just kinda gives up? It's ridiculous (Rosa wasn't even the first black woman to refuse to give up her seat for goodness sakes!), and it plays into this idea of "History Has to play out EXACTLY like the history books say it did otherwise it won't work", which I feel like is exactly the opposite of how Doctor Who usually handles historical events. B) Even if stopping Rosa somehow DID prevent the Civil Rights movement, or slowed it down by a significant amount of time, would that really make a difference to racial rights thousands of years in the future? That's like if the Confederates invented a time machine, and decided to go back to the 6th Century BC in order to stop Cyrus the Great from freeing the slaves in Persia, because they thought that would somehow prevent the Emancipation Proclamation. Why would this Krasko guy go back so far into the past? He wanted to prevent equal rights thousands of years into the future, but instead of going to some place or time that would make sense to HIM, and people in HIS time period, he instead came aaaall the way back to a period that made sense to us, the audience. Why even have him be from so far in the future, then? C) Krasko having a restrictor chip which inhibits him from killing anyone but DOESN'T inhibit him from travelling through time and intentionally doing harm to an entire race of people just seems like a stupidly contrarian plot element thrown in to explain why he wouldn't just kill Rosa (even though it does nothing to explain why he wouldn't just give the Vortex manipulator to someone else who COULD kill her, unless Krasko is literally the only racist left in the future). On top of that, he says the reason he went to jail in the first place was for a crime that killed 2,000 people, so how the Hell was he ever legally released with nothing but a "You cannot DIRECTLY kill people" chip implanted in his head? Just how generous is criminal justice system in the future that 2,000 murders still lets you get out on parole?

13's era does have a lot of callbacks to Classic Who, with the 3 companions and the more historical focus to some episodes. What's unfortunate though is that, despite the larger cast, the run times are still the same length, so most of the episodes don't have the time to give them all something to do, and it takes a lot longer to warm up to both the Doctor and the companions, since we don't get to know them as quickly. Classic Who had MUCH longer run times to work with, so companions all usually had something to do, although many were still underdeveloped.

I understand that a lot of people like this episode, and on its own it's a good episode, but I feel like it didn't do *enough* . When watching this episode live, I was basically live-tweeting it to a friend and when I mentioned that it was about Rosa Parks, she informed me of an earlier girl (Claudette Coleen) who'd done the same thing, and was basically erased from history books because she was too young to be used as the face of a movement. I feel like instead of the time racist, they could've had a subplot involving Claudette's story and giving her retroactive credit for what people say Rosa did. Rosa was essentially a half-scripted recreation of what happened to Claudette, and it could've been interesting to have the team see that and be part of the script. The pieces are already there, since they're already doing everything to make sure all the events - a full bus, specific driver, etc. - properly play out.
