A common thing with new reactors to Doctor Who is the cgi. The show itself is famous for its small budget and somewhat wonky sfx but what keeps the viewer hooked is the quality of the writing. It’s also cool that you mentioned the music briefly, not many reactors do. The music from 2005 - 2017 was made by composer Murray Gold. The first series had a small budget so he couldn’t afford an orchestra so he did it all with software and samples.

"The Doctor" has never shared his real name. Only 4 characters, to my knowledge, have ever known it: his granddaughter, The Master, River Soong; & Clara. The first 2 are from his homeworld, he told River during a ceremony you'll get to see; & Clara discovers it by snooping in the Tardis library (you'll get to see.) The Auton makeup is probably a facial prosthetic. My first Doctor was #4, played by Tom Baker, when PBS bought the 2nd syndicated package (Doctors #4 thru #8.) Due to its intense popularity, they then bought the 1st syndicated package (Doctors #1 thru #4), so I've actually seen all of the classic series, just in an odd order. PBS also introduced me to Red Dwarf, another British scifi series that might be fun to review. Way back when, Dr Who was conceived as an educational show for children. The cast included a mysterious crotchety old man with a time travel machine, his teenaged granddaughter, & 2 of her teachers who, in the process of "rescuing" her, stumbled onto the fact that student & granddad are both aliens from a highly advanced civilization! The Doctor & his companions had adventures in many different periods of Earth's past...hence, the educational aspect. When the writers embraced the show's science fiction aspect by introducing an extraterrestrial menace, BBC wasn't sure it liked this change in direction, but the new format proved extremely popular! It was popular enough that they were faced with a real dilemma when William Hartnell, who played the original Doctor, took ill & was no longer able to continue the role. The writers' solution added a brilliant new dimension to the Doctor's legacy, while creating a perfectly reasonable "out" for lead actors wanting to leave the role. It's why so many diverse actors have played the Doctor over the years, & why a young man can be 900 years old. A documentary about creating the show & its very first ever episode is called An Adventure in Time and Space, & is worth watching, if you're so inclined. It's a docudrama reenacting the conception, casting, & production of the first episode with William Hartnell.

The VFX will, obviously, get better as the show's budget and age grows, but the loveable low budget camp is a classic element of Who from the original series that the modern run likes to reference and toy with even now 😁😁 The first era with Ecclestone is a pretty much perfect introduction to the Doctor's ethics, most prominent personality quirks and the modern show's lore, but there are definitely more serious emotionally-driven stories and amazingly written arcs to follow if that's more your thing! In fact, the "monster of the week" format is great fun and definitely one of the things that has contributed to the show being so successful for so long, but I'm a firm believer DW has some of the greatest singular episodes in television amongst all of those, and some of the most loveable and brilliantly acted "side characters" ever too. Just learn to suspend your disbelief, and you'll have a BUNDLE of fun!!! DW is for everyone 💝

I am old enough to remember the Doctor who of old pre 2005. It originally started back in the sixties and the is a great drama produced by the BBC all about how it came on air. Every generation hads its favorite Doctor from their youth, mine was John Pertwee the 3rd Doctor. Even back then it was tongue in cheek but scary for its time and as kids we would often watch it peeking from behind cushions. Later David Tennent became a favorite although i always fancied Chrisopher Eccleston.

The ideal age to start watching Doctor Who is about 4 - it will terrify, scare, amaze and fill you with wonder, and yes give you many sleepless nights and imagery youll never forget your whole life - then you grow up have kids of your own and put them through the same thing - and thats what generations of Brits have being doing since the 1960's!

@@reactingafool I should add that another reason we want to put our kids through the scares of Who is because its worth it for the Doctor. The Doctor is not a hero in the way a hero normally is, especially American heroes, the Doctors main power are his words, but one time showrunner Steven Moffat summed it up best- “Heroes are important. Heroes tell us who we want to be but when they made this particular hero they didn’t give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things. They didn’t give him a tank or a warship or an X-Wing, they gave him a call box from which you can call for help and they didn’t give him a superpower or a heat-ray, they gave him an extra heart. And that’s extraordinary. There will never come a time when we don’t need a hero like the Doctor.”

I'd definitely recommend watching them all (not just the fan favorites), even if you don't react to each, because it's a one of a kind ride worth experiencing in totality. I was 10 when this aired which I think is about the right age. My parents had watched the original run. The first episode ever was in 1963 so next year is the 60th anniversary. The first season they had almost no budget to get the show back off the ground. It's definitely a bit cheesy but I think you'll really enjoy it. Just have fun and don't take it too seriously. There are some very intense fans out there so beware of spoilers and people complaining about the series in general. This version of the Doctor is the 9th incarnation and is 900 years old. Welcome to the show and great to see a new person watching this great show! Basic background information - Russell T Davies is the showrunner for the early run of NuWho (Modern Doctor Who) and writes the first and last episodes with some a few in between, the showrunners set up the stories for the season and everything. Be careful when asking questions even if it's just a general thought - you want to make people watching your reactions know that if you ask a question you might not necessarily want an answer as it can give away major spoilers - ask questions but just be careful about it (this is if you decide to continue watching obviously). Enjoy the ride and I am looking forward to episode 2 reaction

The first recording block on nuwho is infamous for being a production mess. The tone was wrong, so many things were goofy. IMO, the best seasons and episodes of the new doctor who is the first episode of season 3 and the last 4 episodes of season 3, _ALL_ of season 4, and then the three specials in between season 4 and season 5 (these episodes are only not part of season 4 on a technicality). I could write an essay on _why_ exactly I think the new show peaked there, but in case you watch that far I won't specify. But if you do watch any more, _those_ episodes are the best it has to offer. Really good episodes. EDIT: the twelfth doctor (you're watching the ninth doctor) is also really good, just doesn't have the writing that the tenth doctor does.

Doctor Who is a show that can be whatever it wants to be. Genres are its playground. Throughout its history, its unofficial goal was finding ways to frighten children, creating the meme (before there were memes): watching from behind the sofa. It's what made it so popular, but also got pushback from some conservative circles, famously led by Mary Whitehouse in the 1970s.

Very cool, so a show that could really do just about anything they wanted and were able to based on the landscape of time travel (the tardis), alien worlds, and the show/writers enjoying pushing the show in a bunch of different directions, is that right? something like that... 🤔 That's awesome to make a show that has that kind of range and uses it well. I really may need to dive deep into Doctor Who after everything the community is commenting about it, and after that first episode being so enjoyable.😃

As a follow up to my previous comment assuming you've read it all, here are my Classic Who recommendations. Classic Who worked a bit differently, instead of traditional episode to episode they decided to do Serials, with each individual episode being 25 minutes long, like 1 Serial can be anywhere from just 2 episodes long, all the way up to 12 EPISODES... But there was only ever one Story that was 12 episodes long so no worries. I'll give 1 for each Doctor, and probably another set of recommendations if it catches your eye First though, watch An Unearthly Child Part 1, the very first episode of Doctor Who. Yeah not watching this atleast eventually would be a sin. Anyway onto the actual recommendations 1st Doctor- The Aztecs (1964); 4 Episodes. Typically people would recommend other stories of his but the main appeal of his era to me are historicals, since, fun fact, Doctor Who was originally a kids show meant to teach history and Science, this one especially being a great example. 2nd Doctor- Tomb of The Cybermen (1967); 4 episodes. This is quintessential Doctor Who and is literally the story Matt Smith watched to prepare playing for The Doctor. This is just an awesome story man what can I say. 3rd Doctor- Terror of the Autons (1971); 4 episodes. Hey look, you just saw the Autons here in Rose, let's see them again in their second ever appearance. Whenever someone asks "what's the most 'Third doctor' story ever to third doctor" I say this one, it has everything that makes the era so unique. 4th Doctor- Genesis of The Daleks (1975); 6 episodes. This is often regarded as one of if not the greatest Doctor Who story ever made and is a must watch for ANY fan. 5th Doctor- Kinda (1982); 4 episodes. This is a tough call, but I'm gonna have to with this one. It's a very unique choice and not the most conventional but it works. All I can say is watch this one during series 3 of New Who. 6th Doctor- Vengeance on Varos (1985); 2 Episodes although for some reason Season 22 had 45 minutes length episodes. Whenever anyone asks what the best 6th Doctor story is, most usually say this for very good reasons 7th Doctor- Remembrance of The Daleks (1988); 4 episodes. Yeah despite not actually being the 25th anniversary, most people credit it as such, it has just everything, alot of callbacks to An Unearthly Child, an interesting plot, it's awesome 8th Doctor- the one and only story he has (outside of Audio dramas), the TV Movie from 1996. Yep after the show got canned in 1989 they tried to revive it in 1996 for American audiences... It did not go well, but do give it a watch, it's REALLY fascinating. Well assuming you've seen this and my other comment, I wonder what your thoughts are, I'm always excited to see new whovians.

We still watch Doctor Who - live - together cause it really is a family show and when it get's into the core of your heart and soul, you can't stop loving it. Be warned. So, if you ever see this comment; This modern version from 2005-Now is NOT a reboot, it's a revival and continuation of the original show, with Christopher Eccelston being the 9th Doctor. Im sure you already knew this but don't worry, you don't exactly need Classic Who to watch New Who (we separate the eras of 1963-1989, and 2005-Present into ClassicWho and NewWho) but I would recommend it ESPECIALLY because In the later seasons they start celebrating the shows history alot (I have the perfect episode recommendations for which Classic episodes to watch if you don't feel like watching THE ENTIRETY of Classic who along side New Who) This show is a Legendary British icon and probably my favorite show ever made, have fun in this wonderful journey. Edit: LOVE the Oswald poster, I adore him

You can't pick an age that Doctor Who is aimed at, it doesn't really work like that. It's the archetypal family show, the show that can be enjoyed by all ages on different levels, with very adult jokes and themes that go over the heads of the small children watching it uncritically.
@reactingafool

The fact the whole family can enjoy it is probably one of the reasons it got so popular 🙂

Regarding the lore of the Doctor's name, in universe of the show he is only known as the Doctor. However, when the British media often refer the character in promotional spots or entertainment news, they will call him Doctor Who--it's just easier for them since he's the central character.

THERES NO SPOILERS IN THIS COMMENT doctor who was really cheesy due to 2005 tv in Brittan being cheesy. it does get less and less cheesy as it goes on but its the charm that makes it special. i will say doctor who is always scary. some episodes even being directly pushed to the extremes of fear. also one of the best things about doctor who. and what to keep focus on is the damn soundtrack! its so good. and this show will make you cry at some point. i cant wait to see you watch more

Doctor is his name. "Doctor Who?" is The Ultimate Question. Gallifreans called themselves with these significant words that define their nature through all the incarnations. Doctor can change bodies and personalities - Doctor can be male of female, tall or short, sweet or rude, red or blonde, old or young - but he remains the Doctor. There's also another of his kind that were called the Master. He is the antagonist. Actually Doctor has another name - but noone ever voiced it. It's kind of an intimate thing he can only tell to the closest people.

Oh, my! I love Doctor Who. Watched entire series starting with classic from 60s. I can recommend "Silence in the library" episode. And "The Empty Child" + "Doctor Dances" These are my favorite of all times. Also I love Amy+Rory arc. Actually there are lots of episodes that are outstanding. The Family of Blood The Satan Pit Blink The Doctor's Daughter The Beast Below Vincent and the Doctor - (this one's sooooooooo bittersweet) The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe The Snowmen Heaven Sent + Hell Bent many more probably - but if you are not going to watch it all - watch these ^_______^ The current Doctor is nice - but the screenplay for the last seasons is horrible. Hope they fix this. Very sorry for Jodie Whitacker - she could have been great Doctor.
