Doctor Who is for general consumption, Torchwood spin-off is for adult with darker content, Sarah Jane Smith Adventure is gear toward children and it ended at fifth season when the actress died from cancer.

The funny thing about the Sarah Jane spinoff - Even though it is targeted towards kids, it has more refrences to the classic series than the main show (which makes sense since it centers around a classic companion). They even get returning cast members from the classic era that never appear on the new era. I personally enjoyed Sarah Jane Adventures more than some later seasons of Doctor Who.

I gotta say Eric is absolutely right. As an older Whovian I damn near lost my mind! Sara Jane walked in the office. I screamed when she discovered the Tardis Almost cried when she realized who the man was and did a Calvin when K9 was revealed. If I may suggest that you take notice of who wrote which episodes. Toby Whithouse hit all the nostalgic strings. pure gold

Most companions left The Doctor rather then the other way around, or are lost. Originally Sarah Jane was going to die in her last episode, but they changed their minds and just had her be dropped off. Usually the amount of travelling in universe is dependent on the budget and direction at the time; during the third Doctors run there wasn't as big as a budget, so they "stranded" The Doctor on Earth for a while.

Sarah Jane was the assistant when David Tennant was growing up so he was completely star struck when they started rehearsals for this episode.

I love Sarah Jane! She was a companion to both the third and fourth Doctors. This episode was her grand return to new Who. This episode led to her getting her own spin off called The Sarah Jane Adventures. :D
