I really like this episode because like Father’s Day rose tries to fix her parent’s relationship. Here she trying to give herself the life that she didn’t have in hopes that they will have her.

I always loved the way Rose was replaced by a Yorkie in the other universe. Reminds me of Mickey's "I'm a tin dog!" moment 😂

I've said this before but it amuses me so much that zeppelins are somehow the universal symbol of something being a parallel world 😅 Also this episode reunites Barty Crouch Jr with Barty Crouch Sr

The best Cyberman stories have good dollops of body horror.

The original Cybermen weren’t from Earth but from the planet Mondas. They first appeared in 1966 in the first ever regeneration story „The Tenth Planet“. These Cybermen here are from Earth (fans also call them Cybusmen to differentiate them from the original) and as you’ve seen an alternative universe version.

Back in the episode Dalek there was a cyber man head in Van Statens alien museum, the doctor recognised it.

I love how the TARDIS is also a great character in Who. It sometimes does whatever the hell it wants, but knows that the Doctor needs to be somewhere for a reason. The Doctor and the TARDIS really are best mates. :)

I think Rose cares about her parents no matter what universe. Even if they don't have a version of her she still cares about them... I think that's beautiful. My favorite part of this episode is when Rose looks at the doctor and gives him like this puppy face and he gives up and says "lets go" lol

It's interesting that Mickey was second to the Doctor for Rose (although they continued a romantic relationship sporadically between jaunts), but now Mickey is upset that he's second to Rose for the Doctor. Which is true, but the Doctor has to keep her from going off half-cocked too. Definitely don't blame Mickey for not wanting to be second place for everyone.

Love Don Warrington (The President). So good at playing serious, but comedic characters. You don't see it much in DW but one of the funniest characters in Death in Paradise

Howdy Chris, just a quick update. I have binge watched your entire Dr Who series tonight, and I'm loving it. I first started watching Dr Who back around '74 with Tom Baker, my favorite Dr (I was about 8 or 9). Since you don't want spoilers, I won't tell you that Dr Who becomes a werewolf and throws a stick then changes into a dog to fetch it (ok that was my horrible attempt at humor, I'd never spoil this for you, as I remember how wonderful it was my discovering this world). Now I just have to wait a week for the next one, grrr. Thanks again, bud.

I am 100% sure you are experiencing this episode in stead of just watching, you live it. Not for the enthousiasme you share with us, but when T )he Doctor is yelling to the Cyberman: "BUT WE SURRENDER!" over and over again, you are in fact, surrending ( 16:08 ) , even though you don't agree with The Doctor's plan to do that. Also pleased with the way you show your praise for this episode ( 16:44 ) . What a great watch, for you as well as for us.

The last Cyberman story before this one was "Silver Nemesis" in 1988 with Doctor #7 Sylvester McCoy.

This story is an enjoyable romp - although Lumic is too "BWA-HA-HA!" for me. As you accurately pointed out, this was another story that brought Classic characters back in order to reinforce the fact that this is a continuation,and not a (....dreaded word!) Re-boot; but there are other elements,too. This was the first story of the revived series to be credited to a Classic series writer; it was also the second this series to feature an actor from the Classic series; and it was the first to be directed by a Classic series Director. (There are also lots of little references to past Cybermen stories....but there might be spoilers there). As for the story itself: you really can't go wrong with a parallel Earth story (again - something they also tackled in the original series!); because you can do anything to anyone,anywhere....and then re-set everything at the end :)

I enjoy the alternate universe episodes because it has an extra layer of fun and excitement. If it were me I don't think I would want to see my family because you have no idea what you would encounter and if it's really bad let's say, you can't just un-see it.

since this is a Parallel earth and universe the points of origin of the Ciberman are different , on the main time line the Ciberman originated on the Planet Mondasian, and the goal is Update the universe. ❤❤

"Torchwood" is a VERY dark spinoff series.

I don't remember when but the 9th Doctor called Mickey, Ricky. Though whether this is an intentional callback or not I can't day for sure. It brings up some interesting implications of the Doctor. Be does say that when the Time Lords were around they could pop in and out of parallel worlds in time for tea. I wasn't the one who noticed it but I didn't see anyone commenting on it.

You mentioned Cylons. Lots of people mention Star Trek's Borg. Cybermen predate the Borg by nearly 25 years... And Cylons by more than a decade.

So the Cybermen were created in the late 1960s. They were based on fears around then recent medical advancements like the first heart transplant. The central conceit being the fear that if we can just replace and upgrade our body parts we might loose our humanity in the process. Unfortunately due to them having metal bodies they end up looking like and being confused for humanoid looking robots which really diminishes the body horror aspect of them. In the classic series they were just people in silver suits which may have looked a bit cheap but I prefer them looking like an obvious a guy in a suit since that's what cybermen are.

It would have been pretty cool to see two Roses, though.

The cylons were based on the cybermen apparently (I read an interview with someone that worked on Battlestar galactica back in the 70s in a magazine, either starburst or starlog I think...

It's really hard to say whether Rose's parents' marriage would have lasted if he hadn't died in her world. They certainly had issues before he died, and either Jackie had unfounded jealousy or Pete was wandering a bit there. So.

This two-parter has never been a favourite of mine for many reasons. The villain is too-over-the-top for me and it drags in places. The Cybermen used to be more body horror science fiction like the Borg in Star Trek but here they are behaving too much like robots, imo. I prefer the Classic Who Cybermen.

It's an okay episode, but it could've been a truly great one. I think at the time it took a hammering from fans because expectations had been raised so much by the previous reintroduction of a classic villain ("Dalek"). John Lumic is far too cartoonish, and I have other criticisms (a minor one is that the Cybermen look a bit plasticky). But there is also some good stuff in here.

They should have put Mickey on the opening credits, yes.

Interesting to see what a nasty person Jackie would have been if she’d not had the tragedy of losing Pete and raising Rose. Russell Davies as head writer was very good at introducing classic characters in a way that a newcomer can understand. Starting with the doctor and police box tardis… cybermen…Daleks…. Sarah Jane… classic fans were delighted but new viewers were not required to know the backstories.
