Start at the Vol. 2 beginning (or, depending on how you count, Vol. 1)--2005. What you watched is the beginning of Vol. 3, if you count the original shows. The volume from 2005-2022 is 100 episodes, but trust us :) And you have to do *something* while waiting for this new season to start in May. Ask your fellow KZfaqrs and talk more to your co-host and you'll see what the big deal is about!!!

I’ve been watching Doctor Who for 50 years and love it still. The thing about the Doctor is that its original purpose was to inform, educate and entertain. The premise is that there is new doctor every 3 or 4 years, so it can change to keep up with the current times, which is why it has lasted. The doctor is an alien so can be any colour, any sex, different personality etc. the doctor has mostly been an asexual character, it’s only in New Who where they have introduced a romance element. The only problem with the female doctor was the writing, Jodi did the best she could and was great in her own right. Also, fans of a certain age (more New Who fans of a certain demographic) than us older fans had a problem with it being more ”woke” or political. It’s always been political and isn’t afraid to address sensitive topics in a child accessible way. I love Ncuti already, he brings a new side of the Doctor we haven’t seen yet, not to mention his amazing charisma, but still retains that essence of the Doctor. We always mourn the loss of the last Doctor, but can embrace the next one. Start with New Who if you want to jump in.

Strange as it may seem to NuWho fans, I believe that we had a somewhat broader literacy and philosophy back in the 60s and 70s and a hope that we could do some good for the future and the world. Nuthatch idealism, as with Jo Grant and Professor Jones, and we could change everything. It wasn't BS to us and this more dystopian 21st Century wasn't on the order books. It's the exact effing opposite! And the precursors to the Morlocks and the Eloi got here several thousand years too early!

Peter Capaldi only played the doctor for 3 years just like most others. I think you were thinking about the fact that he played a character back when David Tennant was the doctor. He was the dad in the fires of Pompeii episode.

I am going to fill in one blank that came from the 60th Anniv specials. Due to the activities that occurred in those specials, there was a sort of "disturbance" that allowed mythical creatures to cross into the "real" world. And that is how you have "goblins" in a show that usually has aliens. Also, it was not Peter Capaldi that came back, it was David Tennant.

@@Syntell I watched the *original* show as a geek teen in the early '80s! (I'm 56 next month.) It's a looong history!!!! In the UK, this is a 7-to-70 show--an institution not unlike Trek, but more part of the UK's history and identity, a la the way Americans "own" Superman. Disney is down because the BBC wants a MCU--using a pile of Who actors *from all six decades* still alive!--and it wants distribution help to make that happen. Your boy is right that the original/current showrunner, Russell T. Davies, wants to be Who's equivalent of Kevin Feige and yes, he is right that the UK's "Hitchhikers" is Doctor Who's fantasy cousin! So if you down with Hitchikers, you'll do fine! And if you check KZfaq, we are all trying to figure out the identity of Mrs. Flood!!

What you need to know about Doctor Who, and why I watched it since I was 10 and still a big fan of this show 42 (the answer to everything in the universe!) years later is basicaly what Steven Moffat, a good friend of RTD and showrunner for this show druing Matt Smith's run and Peter Capaldi's run, said about Doctor Who: "when they made this particular hero, they didn't give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things. They didn't give him a tank or a warship or a X-Wing Fighter, they gave him a phone box from which you can call for help. And they didn't give him a superpower, or pointy ears, or Heat Ray, they gave him an extra heart. They gave him two hearts and that is an extraordinary thing. There will never come a time when we don't need a hero like the Doctor." About Mrs Flood, we watch this show with the family, it's always such fun, but when she broke 4th wall, everyone here was going crazy. Who is she, why, WHAT?!!! Looking her up, she is an actress, though not from Doctor Who, and I found a fun fact about her, that she is married to Bryan May, you know, from the band 'QUEEN', man, they are going to 'rock us' so hard with this show, I can feel it in my bones. I hope you start with 'Rose', but understand, the budget was very low, the dialogue can be cheesy, but dear me, there are some episodes that will scare you/melt your heart/have you in stiches/break your heart..... they are so good at that.

"Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" was originally a BBC radio show, then books, then a BBC TV adaptation, then a movie... it was written by Douglas Adams who also wrote for Doctor Who and was their script editor at the end of the 1970s. So there are a lot of connections.

If you gotta start the show you begin with the 2005 reboot up to now and then after that, you can decide if you want to do the 1963 show, but it's all one story, one character. My question is, if you decide to carry on with it, do you know when that'll be, when you might begin the reactions? Hey, Great to see a brand new reactor to the Whoniverse. I’ve been a watching Doctor Who since 1974 and love this show. If you want a quick breakdown of the program I suggest watching death battle The Doctor vs Rick Sanchez. They do a pretty good overview of The Doctor and the show. If you decide to react from an earlier period I would say start with the revival from 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor. Although many will suggest David Tenant as the 10th (Because he’s popular) I’m of the mind to never skip nine. He establishes the character for the modern age and his regeneration into the his 10th has more impact when you follow his stories. Who knows maybe if you enjoy those you may even go back to the classic era from 1963. The best way to think of it is that show is always a continuation, fashion and tastes change but the Doctor and the Tardis change along with them. More importantly he’s always the same person, looks different with a slightly altered personality. To quote from the 50th anniversary when describing the sonic screw driver “Same software but a different case”. Enjoy the journey, it’s lasted for 60 years for a reason. Oh and Ncuti name is pronounced as Shooty! The 15th Doctor

Okay, so the way to remember when Doctor Who was first broadcast is that it was on Saturday 23rd November 1963, which was the day after JFK was assassinated, so it was surrounded by news coverage on the situation from Dallas, Texas. The very first actor to play The Doctor was William Hartnell and he played him as a stern elderly gentleman in the pilot episode but the character mellowed as he grew close to his companions and some later episodes went occasionally into light comedy. Hartnell had been really typecast as sergeant-majors and tough police officers and detectives at the time, but the first producer of Doctor Who, Verity Lambert, saw him in a supporting role as a kindly talent scout in the film This Sporting Life, which was a departure for him, and wanted him for the role. William Hartnell was actually a fan of Charlie Chaplin and had a yearning for a broader range of work than he had previously been offered and he said that the moment he was told of the role of The Doctor he was spellbound. The original 'Classic' series ran from 1963 until 1989. There was a TV Movie in 1996 and the continuation series - which some call NuWho started in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston, the ninth actor to play the role.

If you're looking for a good entry point, the 2005 Series starring Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor is a great place. The show had been off the air since the initial 1963-1989 run (except for a one off TV movie from 1996) so it was written for viewers who had never seen any of it but has lots of nice references for long term fans. It's supposed to be mysterious, so you know there is stuff you don't know and most of it is revealed over the course of the episodes. Basically, there's The Doctor. They travel time and space in a big blue box called The Tardis, which is bigger on the inside than the outside. That's really all you need to know to start watching. I'm a big fan of the 2005-2009 seasons, the first time Russell T Davies was showrunner, but there's lots to enjoy in all the other seasons too. Nothing is perfect, everyone is going to have their own favourite stories and seasons. And, of course, 'fans' love nothing more than complaining about every tiny detail like they actually hate the show they say they love (just like Star Wars and Star Trek and Marvel and every other fandom...) It's incredible to think that the "new" run of Doctor Who has been going for nearly 20 years now. It's almost inevitable that Ncuti Gatwa's series, as distributed by Disney outside the UK, will be a similar jumping on point for a new audience. Hope you enjoy. (I discovered your channel from your Legend of Vox Machina reacts and have been enjoying your content ever since. Would love to see you dipping in to Doctor Who... I'll probably enjoy the journey you take in Doctor Who, watching you throw out theories and discovering that your conversation today is missing a lot of points, what fun. The conversation will be about how surprising the Doctor's story is. I see you in the future; choosing your favorite Doctor, giving a list of the 20 episodes you like the most, which companions you would like to have by your side. Recognizing many guest actors who are a big name today. And before you know it, one day you will wake up, get out of bed, walk to the mirror, look inside, and scream in terror, "I'm a Whovian."

32:45 Prior to this season the sonic screwdriver always looked somewhat like a cross between a screwdriver and a high tech pen. This is the first time it looked like a remote control. Each incarnation of the Doctor has a slightly different personality. Each incarnation gets a newly designed sonic screwdriver and wardrobe. The TARDIS control room also changes with each Doctor. The TARDIS is itself an intelligent being as well as a machine that can kinda read the Doctor’s mind. So it performs these design changes to fit the taste of each incarnation of the Doctor.

Peter Capaldi has only been the Doctor once, and Russell T. Davies is not the one who made him the Doctor. But Capaldi played two other characters under the Russell T. Davies regime before he was cast as the Doctor by Steven Moffat. Or you may be remembering the fact that Capaldi has been a Doctor Who superfan since 1963 when the show first aired, so becoming the Doctor was his dream job. The showrunners go like this: Russell T. Davies (Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor) Steven Moffat (Eleventh Doctor, Twelfth Doctor (Capaldi)) Chris Chibnall (Thirteenth Doctor) And then Russell T. Davies again with the Fourteenth and now Fifteenth Doctors. There is a different actor who played the Doctor twice, but I'll leave you to find out who that is on your own.

Ncuti Gatwa's name is pronounced Shoo-tee Gat-wah. Doctor Who is the longest running BBC TV show. The original series ran between 1963 and 1989, comprising of 26 seasons and they are now called Classic Doctor Who (or Classic Who for short). 97 of those episodes are missing. There were 2 movies made in the 1960s starring Peter Cushing as the first Doctor. Tom Baker is the longest serving actor to play the Doctor. There was another movie in the 1990s with the 8th Doctor and the show was revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor. David Tennant has played the 10th and 14th Doctor. In the original series, the Doctor's companion was called his assistant, now companion. The Doctor usually travels with at least one companion, but occasionally has several companions and they have been played by actors of different races. The Doctor's original companion in the 1960s was his granddaughter, Susan Foreman, although that's probably not her alien name, who he left behind when she fell in love with a freedom fighter in the 22nd century. Susan took her surname from the name on the junkyard door where the Doctor kept the TARDIS. When Susan's chemistry teacher called her grandfather "Doctor Foreman", the Doctor replied "Doctor who?" His name remains a mystery. The Doctor also has a daughter, Jenny, but she wasn't conceived in the normal way. It's implied Time Lords don't reproduce like humans. The Doctor is a time and space travelling alien from the planet Gallifrey. He is a Time Lord, an intellectually superior race and the blue box is his time and spaceship called The TARDIS which stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space. After a few seasons, the Doctor (whose real name is never revealed) regenerates and is played by a different actor. Ncuti Gatwa is "unofficially" the 15th Doctor since William Hartnell played the original Doctor between 1963 and 1966 (my 2nd cousin, once removed, who was a journalist, once interviewed him in 1964). There's also been a War Doctor played by the late John Hurt. The Doctor's weapon is a Sonic Screwdriver. The Doctor usually battles against alien enemies like the Daleks (pronounced Dah-leks) who were based on the Nazis (they believe they're the superior race) and Cybermen. The Doctor's nemesis is called The Master, a renegade Time Lord who has known the Doctor since childhood and can also regenerate.

The TARDIS is meant to disguise itself to blend in with its surriundings. However when the show first started the doctor landed in 60s London and the chameleon circuit got stuck as a 60s British Police call box. Before radios were widely used local police could use the boxes as a sort of base or mini office. They also had a phone so the public could call the station if there wasn't anyone around.

_Doctor Who_ ran from 1963-1989. There was a TV movie in 1996, but it was not picked up to go to series. The series returned in 2005. (There were also some animated works, but laying those aside for now.) The 1963-89 series is known as Classic Who. 2005-23 (or 2022 if the specials go with it--I'm guessing the Tennant episodes will go with this series and the Christmas special with the New Doctor) is New Who or NuWho and starts at series one. The new series is being called NeoWho and is starting again at season one. (It's odd as it starts not that long after the previous series, but they have their marketing reasons, I guess.) So the 60th anniversary is from the 1963 beginning date, but there are not sixty years of _Doctor Who._ I'd say good starting points are the beginning of Series one, three, or five. You can also show a friend one of the standalone episodes (like _Blink),_ and then go back and show them season one. Also could start with the first of the Clara episodes, "Asylum of the Daleks." The sonic screwdriver usually gets a cursory explanation (if just to show the Doctor doing something with it) to a new companion (the person traveling with the Doctor, usually, but not always, a human).

Doctor Who is made for Children, like 6yrs and up. It also just happens to have gorgeous story arcs and excellent character development and beautiful connections spanning all of space and time so it’s fun for grown-ups too. You have to suspend your disbelief so that you can enjoy it properly with all its many layers. Thank you for watching.

I remember reading somewhere that the original target audience was about 9 to 15. The BBC apparently did some demographic research in the late sixties which found that the majority of viewers were actually adults ( A fact which I believe exist to this day ) hence the more serious grounded and mature approach that started with the Jon Pertwee era of the show in the early seventies, and kind of continued with the Hinchcliffe Holmes era that followed. Also Doctor Who was never produced by the BBC's children department it was part of the drama department..

4:29 that is the psychic paper, but the doctor mentions the paper is slightly psychic and when it is shown to a person, it could usually induce them to see whatever the user wished them to see printed on it. Now this does not work with geniuses and those with basic psychic training, and also those with feeble imaginations. It also wouldn't work if the user was trying to claim something too unbelievable. ❤❤

Doctor WHO is an amazing show, it is family entertainment, but not a strictly kids show or an adults show, it is made for everyone and it crosses all genres. Some episodes are fantasy, some sci-fi, some horror, some detectivey, some very character driven and emotional, some of it very adventure driven and fun. One thing it always has is heart and compassion, so it has always been progressive. I'm 48 and I've been a lifelong fan, and hope to always be. Hope you'll watch the coming series and see what you think. I don't care about Disney being involved as long as the current showrunner is there. After his strong personality goes away and passes the torch... Then I worry. Few notes: It was David Tennant that played the role twice, and prior showrunner Chris Chibnall who insisted on the female Doctor, RTD wasn't there at the time. Oh and the guy who wrote Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, he wrote a lot of Doctor WHO back in the 70s and was a script editor for the show, so there is a direct HHGttG link. 4:45 We, all of us, are guessing about Mrs Flood. Guesses abound!!

Hitch Hikers first appeared on UK's BBC Radio 4, before it appeared in book form and BBC TV. I accidentally caught the first or 2nd ever episode on Radio in about 1978. I have been watching doctor who since i was about 10 in circa 1970 when the 3rd Doctor was played by Jon Pertwee. I thought the 4th Dr was my favourite but then after the reboot in 2005 I really loved the 9th (Chris Eccelston), 10th also this xmas the 14th Dr (David Tennant) and 11th (Matt Smith)... but then while the actors were great, sadly the writing deteriated during the 13th Doctor's (Jodie Whittaker) Run. Christmas specials are always a bit different, but in the 2nd of the three previous 60 year specials the Doctor accidentally let fantasy into the previously suposedly more 'scientific' universe. I love how a 60 year series can reinvent itself to appeal to new audiences and I also very much love the fresh positivity of this new doctor.

I caught HHGTTG on vinyl when I visited a small SF bookshop in Ipswich during my college lunchbreak in 1979. Radio was an irritant to my mother who had bad hearing and tinnitus. I immediately bought the records and played them in my room out of her earshot. I was thrilled when he became script editor of Doctor Who and could immediately see his influence. Some weren't fond of the comedic tone, but it was a highlight of the later Baker years.

6:30 Its TARDIS which is short for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. On the outside it looks like a blue police box. But it’s actually a space/timeship the size of a small city that sits in an adjacent dimension. To the best of my knowledge they have never shown the TARDIS exterior on screen. But there are artist concept drawings online. The outside door to the TARDIS is a portal into that adjacent dimension. That’s why most people who get to see inside the TARDIS always say “It’s bigger on the inside”

They don’t reincarnate. They regenerate. They don’t die, they form a new different body which is healthy after being mortally wounded. They can be killed if it happens too quickly for them to regenerate. There are also kinds of energy which prevent regeneration some time lords regenerate easily and some have a lot of difficulty regeneration. The blank billfold is “psychic paper”. If you go back and watch the first episode of the 2005 reboot (called “Rose”) it covers a lot of the nature of the Doctor and some of his tricks and devices. The police box is his ship, called the TARDIS, which camouflages itself wherever it lands. The circuit broke in 1963 and it got stuck in the form of a p9lice phone box which were common in the 1960s. Other such ships will disguise themselves In 9:01 to something common wherever they land.

16:59 It was revealed a few seasons back that the Doctor is actually billions of years old. So the last 60 years of episodes really only show a smidgeon of the Doctor’s life. Prior to that time the Doctor always thought he was a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. In his first incarnation he was a little Black baby girl found next to a door that led into an entirely different universe. A scientist from the planet Gallifrey found her and adopted her. In time the scientist discovered that the Doctor could actually regenerate into a new body upon death. The scientist figured out how to give this ability to others and from this the Time Lords of Gallifrey were founded. So as of now we don’t know where the Doctor is really from and who his people are.

I’ve been a Doctor Who fan since the early 1980’s. I watched Tom Baker and Peter Davidson as the 4th and 5th Doctors when I was in high school. I have watched some episodes that took place with Jon Pertwee the 3rd Doctor. Despite, their limited budget and production values the science fiction premise of the stories were first rate. I would say that since the relaunch in 2005 it has mainly been good. However, lately there have been some writers that spent more time trying to be “overly progressive” instead of telling a really good sci-fi story.

Because of the deal with Disney, they are doing a soft reboot of the show. On Disney+ there are only the 3 specials for the 60th anniversary, the christmas special and then the new season 1 will be on there as well. But all the last seasons since 2005 untill series 14 and all the seasons from the first run will not be on Disney+. So I'm sure they are going to explain everything again to the new audiance via Ruby. So far the Disney influence has been good with the budget and the notes about seing the Doctor earlier but the song was the showrunner's dream for a long time apparently, it wasn't Disney decision. I don't think he's going to do it in every episodes. And the showrunner (Russel T. Davis) is known to write stories with a lot of diverse characters and wouldn't compromize on notes like "don't show this or you're going to outrage some people". My understanding is he would be fine with outraging people like right now people are outraged about the "woke message" but it's been woke since the beggining. If you want to understand why it feals more fantasy than scifi, you should watch the 60th anniversary specials. The Doctor did someting that allowed Myths, Lore and Legends to become reality. I would love to watch you react to the other episodes since 2005 or even the first run if you can find them

Well, it is Doctor WHO after all. The writers will be aware that they need to fill in a lot of blanks for newcomers. I would anticipate that they will do that over time. RTD is a brilliant writer and showrunner. From what I read, Disney does not really take any sort of "ownership" of the series until this spring. There will be a huge marketing campaign to appeal to Disney+ viewers.

aaaah I'm also wary of the musical angle, but since it's one of the specials I'm hoping it's just a um special thing. 🤞 Although Ruby is a bit of a musician and this Doctor is able to perform in general... Like i can see there might be a "we're performer foundlings" angle for the characters. Even the mention of Houdini kinda fits with the performer vibe and maybe there's something cool the show will do with this idk. I am wary of Disney involvement as well but i did like what Russell T Davies did with the show before and he's back. My fear is mainly that it will be dumbed down too much because i don't think that's necessary. Sometimes i feel like Disney underestimates the audience. Also yeah RTD def likes to bring LGBTQ characters to the fore when he can. He's LGBTQ himself. Idk who the Flood lady is... I don't think she's a former companion bc the Doctor would recognize her. And she doesn't know about the Doctor specifically bc she didn't recognize the police box as his TARDIS until she saw it do its thing. But she has to be living there for a reason like she has an agenda. It's also interesting the TARDIS doesn't have a perception filter anymore but i am not all caught up on previous seasons so mb that was explained earlier. Or maybe it means the Doctor is more ready to be visible now, like he's coming out.

For the record, the Christmas specials are never that good, with one or two exceptions. This episode wasn't one of those exceptions. *However,* seeing Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson together for the first time and them completely smashing it is a very very good sign leading into the next series in 2024. So I wouldn't take the episode as typical Doctor Who. We don't have songs every episode 😅. thinking the entire fanbase loves the show lol..... yea 50% rage quit a long time ago. the series has always had some political moments but the older show had many more episodes with new seasons being so short when you have like say 8 episodes a season and 6 of them are politically charged... that ratio is a bit too high.also the show was hugely disrespected by the BBC despite being a cash cow so they never gave it the budget it deserved. I think back in the day they would give them like $2000 an episode. compared to shows today having like 1+ million per episode. Then the hired some guy to run things at the BBC who hated doctor who so just straight up canceled the show because it was "cheap" and couldnt match the quality of classic star trek... well yea its cheap if you dont give them any damn money lol. Then theres the whole disaster of the BBC erasing footage to reuse tape or some nonsense so they lost 253 episodes of the show because selling home video back then wasnt even a consideration. they managed to recover over 150 episodes via various methods but theres still 97 lost to time. I think the only other show ive seen as neglected as doctor who was firefly. but at least doctor who got to keep going despite being looking down on by the BBC

And again, having musical stuff is not Disney influence, Disney has no influence on the storytelling, only the distrubition. Please don't talk half assed stuff to new viewer when you don't understand things. And, being whimsical has always been a part of Doctor Who, it is not Disney,.
