Rare convention footage of Doctor Who mega-stars Colin Baker (The Sixth Doctor, 1984-6) and Anthony Ainley (The Master, 1981-9) talking about 1980s Producer John Nathan-Turner ('JNT'), being directed by Tom Baker (The Fourth Doctor, 1974-81), and playing The Master!
Recorded at the Doctor Who - Battlefield III Convention on 30th October 1999.
In memory of Anthony Ainley (1932-2004) who, to me at least, will always be the definitive Master!
With special thanks to Colin Baker and the organisers of the convention.

Mr Ainley was a fantastic master and a worthy replacement for Roger Delgado, both very sadly missed and passed away far too young.

Thanks for posting. Anthony was a wonderful Master. I met him at an event around 1995. He was in the bar drinking vodka in a pint glass! Such a great bloke.

Anthony Ainley is one Master that me and my friends always joked about and poked fun at, but would we replace him? Not in a million years. I even love Roberts' Master as this hybrid of Delgado's powers and skills with Ainley's attitude. I truly wish he'd lived longer to see more, and I wish the same of Delgado, RIP both of them.

Ant has been dead for twenty years? What?! It only seems like yesterday! Jess who reacts as Sesskasays, is just starting Ant's reign as The Master on her channel and we're looking forward to seeing what she thinks. She said that she was half asleep at the beginning of The Keeper Of Traken. As soon as the cowled figure of The Master turned from his console and faced the viewer, she said, "I'm awake now!"

This is wonderful, the more Anthony Ainley in the world the better. I share Colins remorse of them never having a proper Doctor/Master face off, a real shame.

Thanks so much - this was an absolute pleasure to watch again after all these years, and I much admire Ainley's Master. He was also very friendly and kind to us fans at his signing session. Yes, it's a shame they didn't have a proper face-off story, they spark off each other so well!

The Master against the 10th Doctor was doing more twirling than a jet engine. Way too cartoonish

THE first convention panel I ever witnessed! Came in halfway through but I remember standing watching Colin and Anthony talk

Wow, thanks for sharing! Ainley rambles on a bit about getting to the venue and parking at the beginning (which I cut from the video), so you didn't miss much. This was my second convention after Battlefield II the year before.

Thanks, they certainly were! They are a bit different now, I think, not that I've been to a big one since Panopticon 2003. Did you watch my other convention videos - maybe they will jog a memory?

Really enjoyed going to Coventry to all the events but unfortunately the hotel is no more it’s now a hostel

Oh no, I did not know that. Great memories of this event. The other ones I went to were in Exeter (Battlefield II), Manchester, and London (Panopticon 2000/03).

It's fascinating to see old interviews like this! Do you have any footage of the panel featuring Gary Russell and Jason Haigh-Ellery from the same event?

Thanks for watching! I have quite a bit more from this convention, so stay tuned. I don't have footage from that panel sadly, but I remember asking a question about the possibility of video or 3D 'extra features', and Gary gave a very legally correct answer!

I don't think they ever did. It's a shame there was no opportunity for a Master team-up story in Classic Who (with Roger and Anthony).

Apparently during the filming of The Five Doctors Jon Pertwee was really rude to Anthony. He had issue with The Master being recast as he was best friends with Roger Delgado and his death affected him greatly. It was supposedly one of the reasons that he left Doctor Who.
