Others are saying that this Doctor and series are underrated. I don't see that. I feel like everybody admires and appreciates Eccleston. If this first series had not been popular that would be "all she wrote" for Doctor Who. But Eccleston, Piper, Barrowman et al were so amazing the show still lives. He's my favorite Doctor, actually -- well, OK, second after Tom Baker because, you know, Tom Baker!

As Rose said, the Tardis is a living entity. When Rose absorbed the power of the Tardis, it took over her body and conscience and allowed the box to go back to the space station as it now had a pilot and because they both wanted to save the Doctor. When Rose says ‘ I want you safe, my Doctor’ it was more the Tardis saying it. Welcome to your first regeneration. It’s the same character just a different face and tweaks in the personality.

Such a great episode and farewell to Christopher Eccleston. The Doctor regenerates whenever the actor has to leave the role for whatever reason and it's kept the show fresh all this time. It mixes up their personality (think of it like a slider of core behaviors; some Doctors can be more empathetic while others are more standoffish and arrogant) though they retain their memories of their past incarnations, generally altering the writing of their stories and chemistry with the companions.

And whenever a doctor interacts with his past self (or selves) only the most recent one retains the memories of it. It's a great, logical piece of world building that a lot of people miss.

The Doctor changes every time he is killed. The longest running doctor was the legendary Tom Baker who was Doctor from 28 December 1974 - 21 March 1981. He made the show extremely popular and invented the whimsical irreverent Doctor compared to the much more sober first three doctors. In the old days, Doctors usually changed by necessity (the original series ran from 1963 to 1989, a lot can happen to an actor in that time).
@johnlarro6872
@johnlarro6872 Жыл бұрын
The only time the Doctor changed due to necessity (of the actor, per se) was the first, as he was ill, and struggling to remember his lines. Every other time was the actor's choice to leave, except poor old 6 who was fired.

Great reaction. ..... One of the Hallmarks of Doctor Who is his ability to regenerate...... The show started in 1963...... One Actor could not really play him for 50 years....... So as a Time Lord he gets to regenerate..... There have been 14 Doctors .......with the 15th on his way........... William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, John Hurt, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi & Jodie Whittaker. After the 60th Anniversary shows...... A 15th will take over....... Most of the Actors were there more than 1 year. Some 2 or 3. Some 7 . Doctor Who is a great show....... With a great history....... Keep watching...... See if possible to do the original incarnation of show. It was good. Very cheap special effects. But great stories and acting....... Thanks for all your videos. You are enjoyable to watch.

Indeed, a great reaction - I always like it when someone views a regeneration for the first time. My 'first regeneration' was as an 11 yo in 1974 when Jon Pertwee (in the role for 5 years) regenerated into Tom Baker (7 years) - I didn't know what the hell was going on but very soon got used to Tom Baker. BTW, I believe that the term "renewal" was used for the process when William Hartnell was replaced by Patrick Troughton (the 2nd Dr telling his then companions, Polly and Ben, that he has been "renewed") and that "regeneration" was not used until much later. Anyone know when exactly?

Just an FYI for the future, Travis hates spoilers and this comment literally spoils the names of every future Doctor. I really hope he liked this without fully reading it. But he's complained on his Patreon before about how much he hates spoilers and how bad the comments on KZfaq can be for that and this is a prime example. I'm really not trying to be rude or anything so I hope it doesn't come across that way, just please consider that people watching the show for the first time like Travis don't want to know who the future Doctors are. They want the regenerations to be a surprise. 😬

Farewell Jack, off to your own spin-off show with a lot more kinky stuff for him to do! Since everyone else explains regeneration, I'll do Bad Wolf. The Time Vortex, which TARDIS's soul is made of, is sentient and can choose what it wants to do; it can turn Slitheen into an egg, but in case of Rose, it liked her enough to merge with her. Rose didn't become a Time Lord - she became something far beyond. The Bad Wolf is more powerful than anything you can see in the MCU, comparable to some outer gods. Everything (and I mean everything) she did in this episode is pretty extreme, it's probably nowhere near the full scope of her powers. Rose Tyler is such a nobody compared to the magnitude of this that it would kill her in a few minutes if not for The Doctor sacrificing himself in her place.

She absorbed the Time Vortex. For reference, Imagine a human comprehending all of Lovecraftian knowledge. It's beyond divinity, but it'll destroy a human soul. And yes: Timelords have a regeneration cycle; 12 times in their lifetime, they cheat death by becoming a new person. They do eventually remember themselves after a while, but the initial experience is overwhelming. It was originally created to keep the show going after the First Doctor (William Hartnell, God rest his soul) had to leave the show, and became a massive part of Galifreyan lore.

Yeah, without spoiling I can say that Doctors do tend to stick around a bit longer than this, but Eccleston was having some issues with the production that he's only referred to in general terms, so he left after one season with David Tennant taking his place. The regeneration trick is one of the reasons that the show's continued for so long and managed to remain fresh, since whenever an actor is ready to move on they're able to kill them off and replace them with someone new in a wonderfully dramatic and bittersweet moment like this one.
@space1999

Time lords have 12 regeneration each... when they get old, they can regenerate and have another life... 12 times.... because the doctor is an adventurer, his regenerations are usually forced on him because of injury or damage (like this story).. its not every season but it does happen often.. since 1963 when the show started, David tennant is the 10th doctor.....

Regeneration is essentially how the Doctor heals themselves when they are fatally injured or have grown too old to continue in that body. The way it works is; the Doctor regenerates every cell in their body replacing them with new cells which intern causes the shape shift into a new person. The Doctor is still the same person. There's a minisode set between this and the Christmas episode. It explains a little more about regeneration. It's not essential viewing, but it's called Born again if you want to hunt it down. There are a number of aliens that reoccur throughout Who history, the Daleks are one of them. The first regeneration takes new viewers by surprise, even if they are aware of the concept in theory, the execution is unexpected. This holds especially true for viewers watching well after the fact, those of us who were watching live were usually aware of the press surrounding the new Doctor. And regeneration will not be every season, but it may be any season.

21:43 THIS IS HOW THE SHOW HAS REMAINED FRESH! The Doctor explained the in-universe reason of how this works. Say goodbye to The 9th Doctor and hello to The 10th Doctor! The real reason was the first actor playing The Doctor had to leave due to ill health and old age. The show was extremely popular, but his portrayal was so iconic they couldn't just get a look alike. So they said the heck with it and came up with a sci-fi reason to explain it. The "new" Doctors have personalities far different than the previous. This gimmick has kept the show fresh thru 36 seasons.

So fun bit of fan minutiae about the Dalek Emperor in this episode, We don't know which one he is. Different, equally valid stories across DW extended media have presented a number of backstories for him. Some say he's the original Emperor who appeared in the comics way back in the 60s, other have suggested that he's either a later Emperor or his treacherous strategist, or that he's a new Emperor that came to power during the war. And the thing with Doctor Who's massive usually self-contradiciting universe and the Time War especially is that all of these backstories are equally true at the same time.

Sadly the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) didn't last anywhere near as long as many other doctors, especially in this modern era. It was brought on by his difficult relationship with the writer of the show at the time so he left rather prematurely. What a shame as he was a brilliant doctor and he gave me two of my favorite episodes (Empty Child and Doctor Dances) of the entire show. On the bright side though, you have just met one of the most universally loved Doctors in all of it's years of the show's runtime!

Which you can understand really. You got to hand it to him and Russell T Davis's as his writing is just brilliant as Eccleston's acting. But you have just seen one of the best regenerations. Doctor's 9,10 and 11 in the modern stuff are ace. I've two doctors i ❤️ one is from the older series which is Tom Baker. And the other is everyone's favourite Doctor number 10 David Tennant. He had a lot of convincing to do to turn me around as i thought no one could take over the role after Christopher did such a great job. But he won me around did David Tennant to the point of crying tears of sadness when he left the show. So you should get ready for some more amazing episodes in the future. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

When you figure out the buzzword watch the first season along side third season of Doctor Who. There is actually another spin off series that you can watch after a specific episode on the second season.

Christopher Eccleston decided to quit the show after just One Season so David Tennant was chosen to step in. He is the 10th Regeneration since 1963. But the show stopped in 1989 but they decided to bring it back in 2005 although there was a film in between in 1996. So your watching the 2005 return. Since it's return it has done it's 13rh Season then there is the 60th anniversary Specials later this year then the 14th Season will start in 2024 so happy watching. Look forward to going on this New Who journey with you. It will be interesting to find out your favourite Doctor as time goes on. Everyone has their favourites. Some are more popular than others. Also the different companions the Doctors choose 😊

Yeah, Chris had a disagreement with management and the showruuner, so he left . But he did come back for some doctor who audio dramas .

W/o Chris reboot would have failed. Tennant as 9? Failure. Not edgy enough. reboot needed Eccleston's brooding undertone to win viewers from zero

Welcome to your first regeneration. When a Time lords old body wears out or gets badly injured or dies they regenerate a new body same person, but different personality and taste changing like a change in your molecules. Behind the scenes when an actor decides they had enough or their contracts have expired they usually change different actors for The Doctor some actors last more seasons some don't. The idea of regeneration first came in 1966 when The First Doctor (William Hartnell) was too ill to carry on in the role they wanted the show to continue but the problem was how to change the actor so the idea of regeneration was invented and we've had eight different Doctors over the years since then before Christopher Eccleston who was number 9 and the new guy David Tennant is number 10 some of the younger generation who havent seen Classic Who mistakenly refer to Eccleston as the First Doctor.

Chris because he felt that working on the show was a toxic environment, most Doctors stay around longer.

Losing a Doctor is always a hard time. Then you have to come to terms with a new guy and that is sometimes hard to do. You can also lose companions. Stranded, killed or left behind. Thats never easy either. For me, the latter half of the 4th season is absolute perfection, not just for doctor who, but for sci fi asca whole., even though 10th doctor (this new guy) is close, but not my favourite.

Christofer Eccleston only had one season. A very good season it was too! This is why David Tennant became the 10th Doctor, and had a really good run with lots of good stories and three of my favorite Companions. As far as Captain Jack - he'll be back, but not until Season Three. The actors who play The Doctor usually run for three or four seasons, and then a new Doctor comes in. Anyway - I loved both Eccleston and Tenant. And the companions - one of whom you've already seen. Oh, and The Doctor is always The Doctor - the same person but with a new body, face and attitude. But he remembers everything about who he was before.

I love that u had no idea that regeneration is even a thing.... brilliant what a lovely reaction... its a shame bbc spoiled it for new fans who knew very little about the show back in 2005 by revealing Chris was leaving and David was the new Doctor pretty much early in the series...so we were prepared for him to not be here by the end... Chris deserved better than how the BBC treated his decision to not stay on... Still here comes to amazing DT!
