@Thomas Meehan In Classic Who yes, but New Who has always placed an emphasis on the "no guns" rule, likely to help differentiate the show from other sci-fi or superhero-esque shows which go in guns blazing. Plus it gives the writer an extra challenge for dealing with threats.

@@arimagiiik3214 No, they weren't. The things he describes, the Skaro Degradations, the Horde of Travesties, the Nightmare Child, the Could-Have-Been King with his army of Meanwhiles and Neverweres, were all creatures and beings specific to the Time-War itself. While these things have been revealed or examined in various prose and audio stories since "The End Of Time part 2" was broadcast, they are not something we ever saw in the original series.

"Was she happy? In the end?" That will never not break me down on a fundamental emotional level. And her response is so perfect. "Yes, yes she was... were you?" And then I weep endlessly. Followed shortly by Sylvia's reaction to her deceased husband giving the Doctor the money for the lottery ticket, she acts so genuinely shocked and overwhelmed with joy. If I am ever able to get through the last 15 minutes of this episode without choking up then I know I'm dead inside.

Russell T Davies originally scripted the mystery woman to be the Doctor's mother but later changed it to leave it an open question. This was partly so as to not bind future writers but also to allow viewers to decide for themselves who they thought/wished it to be.
@Rocket1377

That because Davies respected the source material, unlike the current head writer. I wish Chris Chibnall would use the same kind of open ended writing, instead of rewriting canon and undoing 50+ years of story by previous showrunners.

Ok, Paula. Here's my secret about the series as done by RTD. Each main villain is a call back to a major villain of the Doctor's based on the new season number. That is, the first season had the First Doctor's most notable enemy. The second season had the Second Doctor's most notable villain, etc. First season villain Daleks 1st Doctor's most notable villain Second season villain Cybermen 2nd Doctor's most notable villain Third season villain The Master 3rd Doctor's most notable villain Fourth season villain Davros 4th Doctor's most notable villain Fifth season villain Rassillon 5th Doctor's most notable villain (The Five Doctors) The thing is, I figured it out by the end of season two so I knew who the rest of them were going to be. I've seen this episode so many times and it still brings massive amounts of tears. As I said for the last part, Bernard Cribbins and David Tennant had such amazing, heartfelt chemistry. That scene where the Doctor's like, "I could do so much more!" just really gets to me as I've had a lot of things so really bad for me through my life, especially with jobs falling apart. So I've had a lot of those moments. But I absolutely loved how they spent so much time saying goodbye to all the companions. It's actually also a goodbye to the entire era of DW as there was a massive change behind the scenes with a new production team. Anyway, looking forward to seeing you continue these reactions.

He asked "is this it?" Passchendaele, the Somme, Verdun, the paratroopers over Normandy, the troops at Normandy, the Soviets at stalingrad, the slaves in the rebellion of Spartacus, "is this it?"

Brilliant reaction ladies! I will say what I really like is the stark contrast between Paula and Katrina's reactions. You can see which moments affect Katrina the hardest as she braces herself, and you see the opposite end of the spectrum: with Paula seeing the story for the first time and that initial impact it has. Thus ends my favorite era, but Matt Smith straight up rocks it. It's pretty much the cycle of Dr Who. You guys have one of the best reaction channels, keep up the good work!

I think the bigger budge does help though because the quality is a huge step up from early Tennant episodes. Nine will be always my favorite Doctor and his relationship with Rose one of the best of the entire show. Twelve comes really close, but I really really don't like Clara and unfortunately she is there for most of his run. Ten grew up as annoying for me during the years, especially because of his self centric attitude with Martha (one of my favorite companion) and here with Wilf. Eleven it's ok, especially in the beginning, while in the end he becomes more and more annoying also, very childish. Love him with Amy and Rory tho.

I really like this story. It's not perfect, but the performances of Bernard Cribbins, John Simm (at least in this second part), Timothy Dalton and especially David Tennant himself elevate this story to something very enjoyable indeed. The Master's resurrection doesn't make much sense, but it doesn't bother me. He's always found ways to come back from certain death and usually there's no explanation given. I also enjoy Simm's crazy performance in this story and the desperation he manages to convey. You almost pity the Master because he's fallen so far from what he used to be. It also makes sense because of what Lucy did to him. The two substances being put together created a weird chemical reaction. That's what gave the Master these weird abilities that were simultaneously draining his life force as well as making him crazier and more powerful than ever before. He needed to eat so much because his life force was constantly being drained, which to put it simply made him hungry. Initially, the Master turned everyone into himself just because he's insane, but later on he developed his "master plan". It was the Master who figured out the noise in his head must be some sort of a signal and realised by duplicating himself 6 billion times over, he had greatly amplified the signal. Then, he set out to find the source. That was his "master plan". Bringing the Master and the Time Lords back is also really clever because they represent what the Doctor was so close to becoming at the end of the last story. The moment the Doctor explains that he chooses to remember the Time Lords of old and not the one's at the end of the war is really poignant and tragic. It reveals just how much pain and denial the Doctor lives with post time war. It also shows just how impossible of a situation the Doctor was in during the Time War, stuck between the Daleks and the Time Lords. He had no choice except to destroy both. The Time Lords had become so desperate, corrupted and evil that they were willing to rip apart the time vortex, which would destroy everything and ascend to become beings of consciousness alone! It was also the Time Lords, who implanted a signal in the Master's mind, which drove him insane (they did indeed change time and created a bootstrap paradox because the Master was never as crazy in the classic series and they only found out about the signal by looking into the future) just so they could escape. The time lords were simply manipulating the Master for their own selfish gains. They used him so that they could come back, but they no longer required the Master or his "Master race", once they were on the cusp of their victory. Of course, the Master simply wanted the glory of resurrecting the Time Lords for himself too and wanted to become Gallifrey's president. In the end, their hubris cost them dearly and destroyed all of them. Although, I guess the Master redeemed himself at the end by saving the Doctor and realising how much he had been used and manipulated by the Time Lords.

Tennant's "I could've done so much more" speech is incredible. The Doctor is shouting at the universe if that makes sense. Remember, the Doctor was told he was going to die in "Planet of the Dead".All this time he's had time to think about that and prepare himself. He's delayed it and fought against it, but throughout this story you slowly see him accept it. First he thinks it's the Master, then the Time Lords return and he thinks his end will certainly come at the hands of either of those two. At the end, when the president tells him "you'll die with me" he simply replies, "I Know" and closes his eyes and prepares himself. Out of nowhere, he's saved by the Master. He survives, after saving the universe from the Time Lords and the Master. For a moment, he allows himself to become incredibly happy. The prophecy was wrong, he's still alive. Then, he hears the dreaded four knocks and he realises that it was Wilf all along. He has to come to terms with the fact that he won't die in battle saving the universe from the Master or the Time Lords; he'll die saving one ordinary, unimportant old man. After everything he's been through and he's lost, he thought his end would be better than this! However, it's the Doctor's duty to save people. no matter how big, small or "unimportant" they are. He realises he's bought into his own myth and become too self important, that final "lived too long" says so much! After ranting and raving, he finally calms down and happily accepts his fate. He's the Doctor, the man who saves people. As he says, it's his honour to give up his life for a man like Wilf. The tenth Doctor finally overcomes his arrogance in the end and refuses to become the Time Lord victorious. This Doctor still feels like his journey is incomplete though, he "could've done so much more". That's why his final line, "I don't wanna go" makes sense, although I can understand why some people don't like it because they wanted Tennant to go out on a happier note. The final goodbyes are excellent if also a little bit self indulgent. RTD and Tennant had earned it though because they made a show that people thought was a relic of the past into a massive success. This era deserved to be sent off in such a way. My personal favourite goodbye is probably the one where the Doctor visits Joan Redfern's granddaughter. I love how the Doctor wants to make sure she was happy after he left. he realises it wasn't fair what happened to her. Of course, the fact that she has a granddaughter gives it away that she was eventually able to move on even if she always continued to love John Smith. That's why it's so brilliant, when Joan's granddaughter asks him the same question and the Doctor is unable to answer. We all know why. He's lost so much since then. The Doctor's at the end of his life, but all of his friends have left. The Doctor would've lived a happier and more fulfilled life had he chosen to stay as John Smith. He wouldn't have to go through the pain and loss that comes with being the last of the Time Lords.

The fact that the Doctor isn't perfect makes his story great. The fact that he is conflicted makes the story great. The fact that despite all that, that he gave it all up for 1 person, it really tells an impactful story. People take different meanings all the time. All the doctors make "arrogant" comments. But the fact is that they are all inherently good, and it's never in question.

As it's the end of an era (the Tenth Doctor's Era, but also the end of the Russell T Davies Era), now would be a good time to do a Who retrospective, ranking seasons, episodes, companions, aliens, if you're up for it.

Just for the record, STILL. NOT. GINGER! Also anyone want a free heart? I don't want it anymore. Ugh. This one kills me every time. Addendum: Forgot to mention knowing the answer as to why the Doctor is the last Timelord and knowing the horrible choice he was forced to make of killing his own people or letting the entire universe be destroyed makes the scene in season one with 9 and the tree lady hurt that much more. When she touches his arm and says "I just wanted to say how very sorry I am." And the doctor cries the fact someone was giving him empathy for the horror he had to endure and give him a moment of release. That's the one thing about this show as Katrina shows in her reactions this show is even more brutal when rewatching it.

Whenever a character says they'll "never" do something, it's guaranteed that in a very short time they'll do exactly waht they said they'd never do. Still one hell of a shock to see the Doctor pick up the gun, though, and shows how desperate he feels the situation has become. The mystery woman is his mother, but there were two dissenters, and we never saw the face of the second. His dad? or close relative? Susan?? Wilk didn't just knock four times, he knocked four times, four times. And it's absolutely typical that the Doctor would give his life not to defeat the Time Lords, not to save Earth, but to save one old man - even while raging at how unfair it is he knows he's going to do it. You can tell how much he "didn't wanna go" by the way the Tardis reacted; being telepathic, it reflected his feelings. Nine went to Ten almost gladly, having saved Rose; Ten went down fighting it all the way, and the control room got completely trashed. [or course, on a practical level, this leaves the next team to redesign the interior]

Of course everyone loves Wilfred, he is such an amazing character that was a master class in acting by Bernard Cribbins. But what I really love about this is the subtlety behind 10's end. It could have been so easy to end Tennant's run on a bang, and it would have fit the way 10 was. 10- was so much more of a action Doctor, and so it would have made plenty of sense to have him go out on a huge bang. But they didn't. It ended quietly with 4 simple knocks by such a simple and unassuming man. In the end it was Wilfred standing there having gone into the station to save another person he saw in danger. It was Wilfred just doing what he could to help his fellow man while gods fought close by. And I really believe that was why 10 decided to do it. There in that glass cage........was truly a person worth saving. There trapped in certain death......was a good man. Something the doctor knew all to well was a rare and precious thing he couldn't see destroyed. I absolutly love that this, was how 10 went out. He got to see such a beautiful example of the very best of us. I'm a 47 year old retired soldier, and I cry like a little girl every time I see Wilfred saying goodbye in the garden.

After seeing many MANY reactions to this episode, usually the point when the newb realizes Wilfred knocks four times is when the music turns from triumphant to dissonant, and Tennant's face falls. Then they mentally rewind and go "Wait, was that four knocks???" And just like When Donna starts spouting gibberish, they realize the twist at the awful end. When Katrina was looking at her phone, I was worried Paula would look over, see it, and it would break the emotion of the story for her. I finally yelled "KATRINA!!!" to the screen and she put her phone away. Never knew my yelling reached across space and time!! :)
