In 2018, Revenge of the Cybermen had the honour of being the first Doctor Who story to receive (optional) new effects for its Blu-ray release. Here is a comparison of the updated footage with the original footage.
Doctor Who is a BBC Property, the Cybermen are ownership of Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis. I do not claim to be the owner of these properties.
Please leave any and all feedback in the comments.

I always prefer these when they attempt to make it look ‘real’, as in not obviously CG, so I loved the idea of augmenting some of the model shots instead of fully replacing them, it worked great for the rocket launch and explosions.

Like how they blew up the Cyberman ship and instead of a CG explosion, they stuck with the original version. Cause they probably were like, “Let’s alter the images of them flying and the missile coming at them, but leave the explosion.” “Sounds like a plan”

What a great answer. I share your thoughts. Whilst CGI in todays world creates the incredible the problem is that very very few things actually look incredible in real life therefore it starts to become unbelievable. Too much of a good thing creating something that is harder to believe. I wish more producers, directors and visual effect technicians would start to realise this. I am not saying that improvements in special effects are bad. Not at all. In fact I think for the most part the updated effects in the Who range have been done just with a perfect balance of improvement but not OTT.

@@DrWhoFanJ oops sorry, got confused with the Russian River. At the time, I didn't own a bluray player so I didn't really think about buying the boxsets as it would've been illogical at the time. Also, when I got my PS4 (which I use to watch bluray), I was still a bit "ehh" about the bluray collection boxsets because I owned most of the serials on Dvd and the price of a Boxset is a bit. However, I started buying the boxsets from Season 10 onwards because not only does it contain updated visual effects, occasional surround sound and new documentaries, but it helps free up space on my self.

@@DrWhoFanJ oh neat. I would if I could. I live in New Zealand and I get my bluray collections from Australian sites like Sanity or Booktopia and currently neither of them have the boxsets I don't have (Seasons: 12, 18 & 19). I highly doubt that they will appear on these sites anytime soon as they were released in Australia/New Zealand as "limited." For some reason, when the Season 12 Boxset was re-released, to my knowledge, it wasn't re-released in Australia or New Zealand so that was really annoying because of all the boxsets I don't own, I really wanted Season 12. I pray for an Australian / New Zealand re-releases often.

@@DrWhoFanJ the problem with ebay is that people charge huge amounts of money for a Boxset due to the fact that they won't be released ever again. I think I'll just wait. I know that they aren't thinking of re-releasing boxsets but there are still lots of fans who've missed out on a few and ideally, that might convince the team who work on these boxsets to commission a re-release. But again, this is just something I hope for.

A voice change (and some dialogue changes, while they’re at it) could’ve gone a long way to making this story much less embarrassing. I was curious to know how The Mill had handled the Saturn V launch footage being used for the Skystriker; looks as though they settled for adding some fin stabilizers in CGI and blotting out the "United States" clearly painted on the side of the rocket.

Great comparison! Where this story goes wrong in my opinion is that they have a fairly decent atmosphere for Part 1, which still wasn't perfect, then suddenly it all goes out the window with some of the most camp cybermen in history. "It will be a magnificent spectacle, unhappily you will be able to appreciate it!" *Proceeds to walk out with hands-on-hips like a sassy school girl*. I kind of wish they went for a more Wheel in Space style approach. Still, it is nice that you've been able to compare the updated footage with the original footage- I mostly like all the new work particularly with the updated screens etc.

I remember as a child getting the Target novelisation of this story in the early 80s. It was the most thrilling, tense and scary thing I had read. It had massive scale and had peril screaming from every page. In an age before mass VHS releases, this soon became my favourite Dr Who story of all time. When I got the VHS release in the mid 90s I was so looking forward to seeing this great, well-paced suspense-filled story in front of my eyes. Disappointed? You bet! But the story always has a place in my heart and I’m pleased to see some of the more dodgy effects have gone (I always found the ‘rolling cylinder’ effect for the surface of Voga being approached at speed to be a little embarrassing). Harry Sullivan is an imbecile! But I love him nonetheless.

I remember as a kid, maybe I was eight, secretly reading Dicks’ _Death to the Daleks_ novelization in bed well beyond my bedtime but ultimately having to put it down ‘cos I was getting actively spooked (‘“Look!” cried Bellal. The Doctor abruptly twisted back around and regarded the bullet-torn floor that they had just passed over. The formerly damaged surface was now healing itself as if being repaired by the hands of invisible ghosts!’) . . . Great times! 🤣

This story is one of my favourites. These Cybermen had great weaponry and voices. The voice are part of the evolution of the Cybermen - these voices are the precursor to the best voices for any Cybermen (the Peter Davison and Colin Baker Cybermen had the best dominating voices - there was also echoes of humanity to remind us where the Cybermen came from; the new Doctor Who made the Cybermen too mechanical and lost their cyber aspects). Some of the new effects aren't terribly exciting or imaginative - they're already as dated as the original effects. Hobbyist special effects people have been doing much better for much longer.
@Gojirawars03
@Gojirawars03 Жыл бұрын
I disagree about the voices. For emotionless life forms, they sound far too emotional and aggressive. In addition to just sounding not all that intimidating. These designs for the Cybermen are killer but they have horrible voices and dialogue to accompany them that makes them seem more like angry toddlers than the emotionless cyborg soldiers we all know and love to hate.

There is no comparison! I've watched Doctor Who for 50 years, and I don't agree with all these attempts to "improve" the originals! My nostalgia for Classic Who is best served by watching it EXACTLY as it was originally broadcast! Call me a purist, but that's the way I like it! That said, one can't help but wonder if, 50 years from now, they'll be "computer enhancing" Jodie Whittaker? ....... There's a LOT of room for improvement with THAT particular "TARDIS crash?" 👎😂

I loved the improved Dalek Invasion of Earth and The Five Doctors - Special Edition. And even though the new Time Warrior effects are clearly cheap CGI, they looked better than the original effects in that story. Had mixed feelings about The Invisisble Enemy and Invasion of Time. Some of the new effects I liked in those stories and others I hated. But do prefer the original effects on all the others.
