I find the Doctors “from one dad to another” comment and him mentioning he had children/granddaughter in the first episode to be part of a bigger plot that RTD is planning to do?

@@Hex_XDx I have wondered if the person dropping Ruby off is 13. The bearing seems like Jodie, to me. I have no idea what the story will be, but is Ruby the Doctor's Daughter (not 10's daughter, as she never was a baby, but maybe Susan, or someone we don't know we've seen yet)?

I felt that the final speech was also a nod to Capaldi's 12th Doctor: "Remember - hate is always foolish…and love, is always wise." "What survives of us is love" feels like a reminder/continuation of that philosophy. Add a "because" between the two clauses and it works.

Loved Moffat's return, this felt like Doctor Who, the story was tight and the pacing was good, terrific performances, quite a few hints at older episodes and encounters dropped by The Doctor. First episode of this new era that I will happily rewatch.

Not sure why you brought up the Doctor making references to older episodes as if that's unique to Boom this season. Every single episode of this season so far has had loads of callbacks, arguably to the point of it being a bit tedious.

So despite Susan Twist characters appearing in most episodes so far, this is the first time the Doctor has seen her face, is that correct? Ruby has seen her face before but maybe there's enough time past for her to not see a resemblance. I find it odd they've skipped 6 months of the Doctor and Ruby travelling together. It seems too soon and quite specific. We know that most companions spend more time in the Tardis than we see on screen, but this time jump just seems off.

If you're going to have a couple of kid-friendly, campy episodes, where else would be the best place for them in the season than at the beginning, when we're just getting to know the new Doctor and his companion? Since the Disney deal was meant to gain more viewers, I think we really needed the levity of the Christmas special and the two first episodes to really lure them in. Moffat then brought the hammer down with a masterclass in tension-building and showed off both Gatwa and Gibson's acting skills. I think the rest of the season is going to be utterly fantastic.

I really enjoyed the episode (I didn't watch at midnight was way too tired) was it Moffat's best one ever no but it was good. I agree the oh your first planet part was a bit jarring considering Devils Chord and it does make me think this episode should have been before Devils Chord as it also has the concept of music helping to save the Doctor and of Ruby helping the Doctor if Devils Chord had followed this things may have made more sense. I have seen criticism of Ruby regarding disregarding the Doctor on chucking the umm 'Dead Soldier/cleric' too him BUT I think she was right not too. If she had there were too many variables for it going wrong her aim being the top one. If her aim was even slightly off he would have had to move to catch it and Boom and she would have been dead anyway. I liked the Parents love will win the day in it but in fairness I am a parent and I know I would do ANYTHING to help my child. The Doctor again mentioning him being a parent is interesting and does make you wonder if Susan is going to make a return or even Jenny. Susan Twist appearing again but this time the Doctor seeing her ruined one of my thoughts on her. Previously he either had his back to her or she had her back to him and my thought had been that if he actually saw her he would sense something about her and be more clued in to her. I was wring ge showed no recognition at all 🤦 I would give it an 8-8.5/10 and I will be rewatching 😊

This episode disappointed me to be honest. It definitely had its moments and im glad to have a serious episode, but I feel the potential of the premise was wasted. I thought being stuck meant the doctor would have to be extra resourceful and clever but he barely did anything like that except when making Ruby check the weight of the urn. Anyone else could've been stuck on that landmine and nothing wouldve changed. And the resolution was completely random and unsatisfying. As much as people complain about RTDs deus ex endings, this was just as much of one, and it ruined the tension the episode was trying to build up. The romance sub plot was weak and I knew that guy would die seconds before he did lol. And the girl and her dads relationship was way too underbaked for how exaggerated the ending with him was. I also thought all the random bits of dialogue hinting at the audience about Moffats era were so jarring. The thematic elements of faith and capitalism were also so thinly written. Like The Doctor complained about faith so much that it shouldve been explored more in how he either changes his mind or is proven right, but we just got a throwaway line at the end. What I did like were the performances from Ncuti, Millie, and Verada (the little girl wasnt very good at all though) and I also really liked the shock of when Ruby got shot. Other than those things I can't really think of anything else. 6/10? Idk...

I also feel like Moffat wrote Ruby too much like clara. When she decided to walk up to the Doctor instead of throw the urn. I feel like Ruby isn't cocky like Clara. It felt out of place.

@@thaliavision1918Honestly the whole episode kinda felt too much like a Moffat era episode. It doesn't fit what we've been seeing this season in terms of the character dynamics of the doctor and Ruby. I think RTD didn't edit it enough to make to fit better to this season. It kinda felt like a tribute episode to Moffat instead of an episode for this season.

Boom bombed. The overnight ratings have dropped by about 600 thousand between episodes 1-3 of this new season. We of course have yet to see the consolidated ratings, there is a chance they will paint a different picture but I suspect it wont be anything near what the BBC had been hoping for. This is what happens when a Showrunner pushes his Queer agenda beyond a point the public are willing to tolerate it. RTD has gone far beyond anything he attempted on his first run on the show, at times it seems like the show is lecturing the audience so its no wonder that audience is disappearing. Its not 2005 anymore the culture wars have ensured that a large section of the population has become less accepting of social messaging and far more illiberal than ever before so I am not sure even as tame as it was compared to this would be accepted now.

There were so many things wrong with the episode, the characters acted illogically, the tardis is right there with insane amount of equipment, unable to deactivate a landmine considering their capabilities shown previously is just silly. It is fine to rave about the episode, but your review is just meaningless without any criticality.

Let me get my negative hot take out of the way. I liked this one, but I’m not sure it was Moffat at his best. Some parts of it were very clearly him yelling about things he didn’t like (capitalism, religion, etc.) The line the Doctor had about faith being that magic word that keeps you from thinking for yourself when they revealed the Anglican soldiers were just stupid and fighting themselves rubbed me the wrong way. It came across a bit ignorant, like Moffat was writing about something he didn’t understand because faith means a lot to a lot of people of all religions. That said, the concept of the Doctor getting stuck on a landmine was excellent. Ncuti really sold the high stakes pressure of the situation and while I didn’t buy that Ruby was dead, they sold it hard when she fell into the crater. I genuinely didn’t know how it was going to get resolved. But I did know one thing and it was that the kid was so dumb. Even if she couldn’t figure out her dad was dead, you would think she’d have some common sense about being in a battlefield and not spending time looking at pictures of antelopes lol. I still think Ruby is Susan’s daughter… especially with that “next of kin” stuff.

Let's not call Steven Moffet a 'genius' his record on the show is Spotty at best. He's not good at writing Sci-Fi and Fantasy. He's much more a comedy writer. Coupling was Brilliant.

Exactly. I honestly really like so much of his writing on Doctor Who but his record is about the same as RTDs to me. He's had some genuinely great episodes but... Let's Kill Hitler is in my opinion probably the worst episode of the show... I know things like Orphan 55 and Love and Monsters exist but those episodes are very standalone. Let's Kill Hitler takes probably one of the most hyped and teased mysteries the shows ever had and ends it in the worst and most laziest way imaginable. This episode was definitely better than that, but it was also very clunkily and lazily written. It really feels like he barely put any effort into it at all.
