The fact that Paul Merton did his research and found out Doctor Who had beaten the BBC's biggest shows at the time... says a lot about the truth of what was going on. It was done for personal and money saving reasons. As for the cheapness of Doctor Who? That was down to the BBC. And it could've easily been changed by a simple increase in budget.

@@KeiranCounsellKC1994 They were being so unprofessional. Allowing personal feelings to over ride business concerns. They had a show in Doctor Who that was selling aboard. Had people asking for more episodes. Anyone with a brain would see Doctor Who as a show worth putting more money into. Instead, they put all their money into Eastenders. It was a gloomy show. Never going to sell to the States. All of it proved how out of touch the BBC was back in the 80s. Simple rule of business: if you have a product that is doing well - build on it.

@@johnking5174 I didnt know this but it doesnt suprise me, after a point in the 80s the BBC started to lose touch of how to make good business choices and good programs, in the 90s and early 00s they did loads of repeats of older shows because they just couldnt make shows like them anymore and when new who came out the BBC got all cocky like we made a hit again and then plumbed millions into making the voice work when it was failing, litterally chucked money at it, hired new celebs, changed the style. Its very odd when you look at how the BBC act towards shows they make, the long running popular ones they just seem to think well oh well its just old now and they are always looking to make new shows, but as soon as they peak in popularity they stop bothering with them

Nathan-Turner is a weird one: he clearly saw all the faults of the Graham Williams era, and very swiftly corrected them....and then created a batch of faults all of his own.

Its swings and roundabouts, what he was doing was new and there was no playbook for it and no guarentees it would work or for how long. Many classic shows that were reimagined between series and modernised or tinkered with swiftly died shortly after so its a miracle he managed to pull it off for as long as he did

With JNT, unfortunately every step forward was accompanied by several steps back. I don't actually think he did see all the faults with the Graham Williams era. He just sneered and dismissed the whole era out of hand, making no real distinction between its flaws & its merits (he didn't even like City of Death, he didn't like Romana), and threw a lot of the good stuff out with the bathwater. He'd worked behind the scenes under Williams long enough to get the occasional idea of what could be done better, but beyond that he had no real forward vision for the show. So he just ended up picking and choosing characters he liked from Season 18, and past monsters he thought the fans would want to see revived. Certainly a lot of Williams' wiser choices (keeping past continuity elements to a minimum) were undone by JNT's approach. Infact I'd say it felt blatantly the case that the show now felt subject to cold, cynical executive decisions rather than feeling guided to its grand destiny anymore. The other problem is it did seem like he was insecurely paranoid when it came to having anyone onboard the show who might have a more solid idea about the series than him.

As much as I love the classic series it probably did need a rest. Some of the later stuff was a very mixed bag. The worry is unless Russel T Davies can revive it after the dreadful Chibnall / Whitaker era the series will be heading for another extended break.

To me Classic Who should've ended when Tom Baker left. As for New Who, I never much liked RTD as showrunner, and am not keen to see him back. I think most fans were fed up of the woke politics of Chibnall's era, but RTD's new era will be no different. I doubt it'll be the needed salvage fans are hoping for.

I’m no longer surprised to find short-sighted executives who lose track of how to make money: both tighten budgets, and invest in properties! How many millions/billions were lost by the Beeb ignorantly following the lead of Paramount in canceling Star Trek in its third season, and losing a crap ton of money, due to fiscal short-sighted ignorance? Michael Grade demonstrates his incompetence, and inability to truly turn a profit from properties beneath him. He’s successful only in the short term. Might be why he has no “Sir” in front of his name!

I think his expectations were far too great for a show on such a low budget, he knew it couldnt get more money, enough to allow better technology but then expected it to be as good as a high budget show or movie
@kennethos8089

@@KeiranCounsellKC1994 Yep. Shooting a show on tape is an insult. The Beeb is very insecure and territorial, since they refuse to allow anyone else to have the rights…including others to make series, or even movies alongside the show. They ignore tremendous profit opportunities. It’s like making money isn’t their primary focus.

@@kennethos8089 ino, I hate tapes so much, america was using films and by god their old television series look glorious even nowadays where the bbc content looks increasingly shoddy and cheap and it did at the time too but thats ofcourse no fault of the talent that worked on the show at the time, they did the absolute best they could with what they had. I think the BBC were considering letting other broadcasters have input in the 90s but at the time doctor who wasnt hugely popular so the people in the bigger better funded american industries were like doctor who what the hell is that? XD the tv movie could have been huge but the script didnt respect the show so went through loads of rewrites with fox and bbc arguing over how it should be done. I think segal had an impossible task as a result

@kennethos8089 2 жыл бұрын
@@KeiranCounsellKC1994 Agreed. As a wilderness years Whovian, I watched the TVM live as it aired, very excited, but confused by the bits you’d expect. The Beeb seems embarrassed by shows that do well that it doesn’t respect, and this isn’t a good business model for increasing audiences or creating good product. DW can infuse sci fi into drama quite well, but it won’t have a “respectable” audience. Nor will ST or SW, but they’re still money-makers. Beeb has much to learn even today.

@@kennethos8089 yeah but dont forget when your business gets money for nothing, money by default it doesnt have to worry about profitability or making things work because its going to get money reguardless. As much as I thought that the BBC, in the way they tried to underhandedly cancel the show the first time, and Michael Grade being a total twat, not only towards the show, but the fans as well, if the show had not been cancelled when it was, it would have just languished on the air with next to no budget, and no good writing until everyone hated it and didn't want to see it anymore, and we wouldn't have gotten the revival in 2005 with much better budgets, and better writing than we'd seen since the 70's. Barry Letts and Terence Dicks were the last great writers and show runners of the classic era. I was excited when I heard that Russell was coming back for the 60th anniversary specials and season 14. I do hope he sticks around longer, and brings back the heart that he brought to the show in 2005, and has been steadily disappearing since 2010.
