The original cybermen design is easily the creepiest design they've had. They genuinely look like hospital patients that were given these cybernetic parts against their will and it's so effective!

The Doctor's inactivity in this story actually elevates it even further for me. This is essentially a Troughton story, from the setting, to the companions, to the villains and all that is the universe's way of telling the Doctor that the world is changing and that he needs to change along with it. If you really read between the lines, all of his absent scenes are just him taking a final rest while contemplating his destiny. And when he does finally return, Hartnell's performance sells the Doctor's sombre determination to get with the times while also being sad to let himself go.

6:10 The eyes. What could be seen as just a costuming error, it makes the Cybermen far more terrifying. Because they were us. They will be us.

I find it interesting how the first doctor's first (the daleks) and last (the cybermen) aliens that he faced off against were two of the most iconic monsters of doctor who.

It's like getting an extra present everyday until Christmas

Having read the TARGET novelisation first, it's hard to notice how little the Doctor actually does in this story. But credit where credit is due, William Hartnell managed to keep his Doctor's character going right up to the end. Still the same man; Intelligent, confident, a little prickly but kind.

If you watch all the 60s Cybermen stories after listening to Spare Parts and then watch Attack after them all, they form such a perfect story arc. I also don’t think this serial would be nearly as effective without the use of Space Adventures Pt. 2

I think Polly only being able to offer Coffee is more about her being a layabout socialite than her being a woman. Ben being Royal Navy at least has a useful skill set in this situation and Polly does get her moment to shine trying to comprehend a society that is about as anti-social as its possible to be.

Starting off at 20 minutes from the get go? VERY HEALTHY!

The last episode surviving from the Hartnell era being Episode 3 of Tenth Planet, is the equivalent to if part of the Tennant era was lost, and his final surviving episode was Turn Left.

10:27 Pedler was a medical doctor with an interest in fringe topics like parapsychology, so he perhaps wasn't what I'd call a "hard" scientist. That might explain some of the vague or iffy science here, and we'll see more examples in the next cyber-story.

I remember 1986 well. Challenger, Chernobyl and then that bloody duplicate Earth and the Cyberman invasion.

I wonder if the reasons that the science seems a bit iffy, is that terms like radiation were still quite new to audiences back then. I always use the example in Psycho they have to explain mixed personalities to the audience. This might be similar. Also as a Star Wars fan, I’ve also got to mention that Bossk, from Empire Strikes Back, got his space suit from the BCC archives from this episode, worn by Earl Cameron’s character.

I really feel like you’re not giving it enough credit when you call it an average base under siege story. It may appear that way now but it was the first “base under siege” story (before it was ever called that) that the show ever did. It’s completely unlike any other 1st Doctor story.

The emotions around Hartnell's regeneration is end of time done right

I think one of the Cybermen did have a spoken name on screen, but it happens once, and goes by quickly. It occurs when the leader communicates to another a Cyberman, named Jarl, somewhere in episode 2 or 3.

Great video, the mondasian cybermen are my favourite out of all the cybermen. I loved them in this and in the audio 'spare parts'.

This is one I really hope will be found. I feel, not only is it good, but Part Four is an important one that really needs to be discovered one day.

15:40 FINALLY! Having never seen 10th Planet, I never knew where "It's far from being all over" line comes from. It's been repeated a lot of times in regards to regeneration (though maybe it's more to do with the ending of Brink of Death by big finish), but I am so happy I know the origin of the line now.

Fully agree on the science being incredibly odd outside of the concept of the Cybermen. Kit Pedler has a reputation amongst classic Who fans for using some really weirdly inaccurate science throughout his time on Doctor Who. Side note, I'm convinced Kill the Moon is meant to be a tribute to Kit Pedler's inaccurate science.

My Review: I admire this story, I love it, it's so entertaining, the characters are well-written neatly, the Cybermen were downright so terrifying! They sent chills down my spine, I prefer the Mondasian Cybermen to be my most favorite Cybermen, they are the true definition of 'emotionless', they seem very friendly but they are for sure deadly, very deadly. I do like their voices and their dialogue. "I do not understand you, there are people dying all over your world, yet you do not care about them." I have no words for this quote, it is true, the Cybermen can beat you in an argument. I would like to thank the voice actor who did the Cybermen's tone perfectly done. Just love the concept of the Mondasian Cybermen, what makes them scary is that they have a very human-like appearance, seem very friendly, they're the true definition of 'emotionless', and the way they speak with their mouth opens is unnerving. The later Cybermen in the NuWho seems to have an angry tone, very hostile, they gunpoint at people and force them to be upgraded into Cybermen, I don't see the later Cybermen as "utterly terrifying". This story also introduced the concept of 'Regeneration' which truly made Doctor Who immortal and still runs 57 years now. It was so sad to see Hartnell go, he's somewhat an underrated Doctor, people just now think of them as a grumpy old sexist man, but no! He's far greater than that, he has a complex personality? I do enjoy Hartnell being the Doctor, he does an astounding job at it. The Doctor gave out a wonderful defining moment where he was saying Goodbye to Susan and one day, he shall come back, yes he shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to him that he is not mistaken in himself. Such a classic story that introduced a great concept of regeneration and the utterly terrifying Mondasian Cybermen, 10/10.

Can't wait to see the rest of this Cybercember, also I really do love The Tenth planet, especially the Cybermen's voices. It really focuses on their lack of emotions, which I think is what makes the best Cybermen stories.

I like to think the 1st doctor regenerated because he was rapidly aged by the time destructor in The Daleks Master Plan.

I checked the transcript for the story, and one of the Cybermen ARE named in dialogue. Specifically, the Cyberman known as Jarl calls Krang by his name.

Great review, I’ve always been bothered by the lack of cybermen & Doctor in part 3. It basically amounts to people tediously arguing about whether they should launch a rocket/bomb. It’s because of this I usually skip from part 2 to 4

Curious, will we be seeing Cyber-Steve and Cyber-Jeff in future Cybercember vids? They’re still hilarious.

So glad to have the daily reviews back, loving your work (although I was sure this marathon would be called De-Cyber! Although gives me hope that this will continue as an annual Blank-Cember tradition). Tenth Planet is an interesting story, very much the blueprint of the base under siege story before the production teams honed in on how to make the scenario work to its full potential. Future stories would build tension with “they’re already among us” scenarios such as The Moonbase or having a human element working in thrall to the enemy outside such as Web of Fear or Fury from the Deep. Tenth Planet focuses more on the excitement of space rockets and astronauts which is very much of its time when it was made but does compromise the potential horror of the Cybermen as you say. Still the best version of the Cybes though, even if their fairly comprehensive massacre in part 3 does diminish them a little. Roll on the rest of the marathon, making what could be a difficult December in 2020 something to look forward to!

In my opinion, the head guy in charge could almost be a secondary villain. He's so quick to suspect treachery and it's funny that the invasion of the Cybermen in part 4 actually saves the Doctor, Ben, and Polly from being shot by him.

I totally love these Cybermen. I love their voices in this serial. The old comic strip used this design so that's how I drew them when I was a child in the Sixties. Decades later, the Mike McMahon strip in the weekly .

Favourite quote from The Tenth Planet.. 'It's far from being all over!'

As arguably the most seismic Doctor Who story of all time, The Tenth Planet is not only important but good. It's one of my favourite Hartnell performances, the Cybermen have (arguably) never been better characterised and it's very well directed. A true classic that the show spent the next ten years trying to remake.

The way you described this scene just makes Hartnel's preformance hit like a truck. 14:40

This is one of my favourite ever Doctor Who stories and it’s probably because of both Hartnell and the Cybers. I love the Mondasian Cybermen. I think they’re the creepiest ever, with their flesh hands, their voice, and the fact that you can see their eyes in several scenes. I also love the performance from William Hartnell, especially the blow up he has: Emotions, love, pride, hate, fear! Have you no emotions sir?

I really recommend the Big Finish audio Spare Parts, it's a fantastic dive into how the cybermen were created on Mondas. It's possibly the best cyberman story ever, far exceeding anything seen on the show.

The minute when you said they have *eyes* , is when their terrifyingly factor, multipled by x66.

I think you fluffed Anneke Wills' name also the black actor said in later interviews that he didn't recall Hartnell having any issues with him at all so the evidence is somewhat conflicting. Love cyber stories can't wait for the upcoming reviews!

13:39 The stuff that happened with hartnell is why they don’t use older doctors anymore out side of cameos. The oldest the new series had outside of classic cameos was Peter Capaldi who was in his late 50s at the time of his era.

I have loved Doctor Who from the very beginning but I must confess as a child it was in spite of William Hartnell's portrayal of the Doctor. He reminded me too much of my own erasable Grandfather, and I admit that 9-year-old me was delighted that he was regenerated. However, time has mellowed me considerably and knowing what I know today I look at William Hartnell's portrayal of the Doctor with a different perspective that only age can provide. I now look on both William Hartnell and the first episodes of Doctor Who with great affection, and perhaps in retrospect a nostalgic longing for a time that is gone and that never really existed.

And so CyberCember begins! Very excited for this marathon

This is interesting. I recently watched The Tenth Planet and came to the same conclusion. A very broadly written story that works okay on it's own (I feel like the resolution is too easy with Mondas disintegrating and the Cybermen just dying as a result), but is elevated by great villains and an amazing final cliffhanger with the Doctor regenerating. I just hope Patrick Troughton can live up to the excellent character and performance established by William Hartnell.

This story is nowhere near perfection, and yet is one of my favourite stories from the Hartnell era

And here is how you do diversity the right way in Doctor Who. Notice how it's not shoved down our throats or preached to us. No its actually part of the story as explained. The diverse crew versus the clone like Cybermen. This was very ahead of its time and done right. If only they could figure this out today maybe we could get great original stories about a batty daft but oh so clever guy in a police box saving worlds or the universe. It doesn't even feel like Doctor Who anymore! If there ever was a missing episode I really want to see returned its Episode 4 of The Tenth Planet featuring Hartnell's regeneration!

Brilliant review Mr T. Personally I don’t think this is a great story. It’s definitely good with the cybermen and regeneration, but I find the Characters and plot fairly box standard. I don’t think it’s a 10/10 or 9/10. I’d personally give it a 7/10

For its legendary status the Cyberman dont actually do much and General Cutler is the adversary with his bruised ego. This is the most human and scariest version of the Cbmen before their featureless robot look. In all the years since we never learn anything more about Mondas or even visit pre-conversion. The Capaldi finale is a space station so not clear how that tied back to Mondas if they evolved separately. Also was Mondas ever in contact with the Silurians on Earth or Ice Warriors on Mars?

The hands were an unintentional cockup, someone had forgot the gloves. They tried painting the hands silver but you can't really see that in black and white.

Aside from Hartnell's famous Billy-fluffs, is this the earliest example of a key word or technobabble being cocked up in Doctor Who? See also Pertwee mispronouncing chitinous as "tchittinous", Tom's habit of saying "Gallifree" and Matt Smith's "MeTEBilis" :)

Does it add or subtract anything from Hartnell's exit to know that, after exiting the base & before his resurrection, the Doctor crossed paths with a much later version of himself, who was also dreading his resurrection? Honest curiosity.

I keep hearing people saying this is the last remaining episode of the Hartnell era but I've been watching the first 15 episodes of the entire series with my little brother. I guess maybe my parents found copies recently?

When I watch this story I always think it was a good soild start to the Cybermen's run in the classic series.

I watched this as a kid in 1966 and was horrified by these animated corpse looking Cybermen...easily the creepiest of all because they were so un-robotic except for their super-weird sing song voices.. Todays marching robots have lost the creep factor.

Were the cybermen actors very tall or did they have platform shoes on?

When I first joined r.a.dw years ago, one of the first things I did was barter for a VHS copy of the incomplete serials that had not (yet) been commercially released by the BBC. That VHS was more like watching a radio play of this serial, but I devoured that bootleg copy and wished the Beeb had seen fit to keep episode four. I'll agree the cliffhanger to episode three is an all-time great and this story works fairly well for what it is. Ah, memories. Looking forward to the rest of December.

A superb review. Pointed out lots of good things. I watched this 3 years ago for big regeneration watchthrough and got contrast between emotional General and Cybermen. U can certainly see this as Cold War Metaphor of course. The Cybermen may well be stand-ins for Soviets, but the American figure here is shown as the other extreme, almost destroying the world through his recklessness. The Z Bomb naturally serves to show fears of nuclear war. We are told destroying the other sides home would also destroy us. Just another element to this story, the Cuban Missile Crisis was still fairly recent, from early on DW shows the fears of nuclear war, fire in An Unearthly Child could be seen as this to primitive man and of course the fate of Skaro in The Daleks. So... bookends for the era? Harshly enough a space flight was lost in 1986. Also someone forget to bring gloves for the Cybermen hence why they have bare hands. But it still works in showing how human they are.

Nice, looking forward to this. Luckily I'm subscribed this time unlike last year.
