Today, ahead of Character Options announcements, we’re discussing and speculating on upcoming Doctor Who figure releases at B&M stores in 2021 & beyond. Based on the last few years of set releases (post-2018), I’ll try to come up with ideas that could come to fruition within the budget parameters of the figure line i.e. re-use of existing figure body sculpts with budget spent on new head sculpts and/or clothing & accessory sculpts. We’ll look at potential companion releases, Doctor and monster/villain variants.

If I recall rightly I believe Al Dewar said something about "mixing up" the order of the Dalek sets so as the silver variants are more spaced out, so maybe we're getting 70s Daleks and then power/evil later?

Character really needs to get more 1960's figures, I am astonished that Doctor Who's First companion hasn't received any attention from character yet.

I feel like we should be able to demand more from CO, we've done the retools, but it's time for some brand new figures. Supply and demand, make great products and get great sales. I guarantee you they made PLENTY from the past couple of years to fund new figures.

I'm sure they've done well but these sets are only £20 with multiple figures inside. To get entirely new figures, they'd have to charge £20 a figure. Could they guarantee a profit on new figures? Dr Who isn't as big a franchise as Star Wars & Marvel (even though we may kid ourselves), so wouldn't sell anywhere near as many units as those figure lines do.

Considering we've got from just rereleases and repaints, to just one or two head sculpts, to 6 completely new head sculpts in one year, I'd say things are looking up for the figure line. It's still going to be limited for now, but the use of new PVC wraps is really helping to open up figure opportunities.

Always thought that would be an easy one for them; just a rotocast would do. Fortunately, Nathan Ward Designs makes an impeccable custom resin kit, if you're interested - links in description.

The fur-coated Donna could work as a base for a Five Doctors Tegan, with Peri's legs. Also, the body of the Weevil Torchwood figure could be repainted for Adric, and the Jo Grant body could serve for Vicki.

I'd use a Lazlo body for Adric, it is similar in shape and the correct height more or less.

Also they can't use the Torchwood figures as bases as they weren't made by Character Options.

If Character Options is reading this thread, rereleases of older, harder to get figures, is a must for us collectors, and if you can accurately come up with new characters using retooled parts of other figures, like Harry Sullivan (which was perfect), great... but we’ll be happy to wait for new sculpts of new figures if it means getting accurate costumes. Otherwise the figures look like custom fan figures (not very good). Personally, I want all of Tom Baker’s companions in each episode costume, including Nyssa, Adric and Tegan, however long it takes to get them. 👍🏻

I’d love to see a death squad dalek and Captain Jack figure (with better headsculpt) set and a Sacha Dawan master, Jo Martin and Lone Cyberman set I’d like the cyber warriors and a 2013 cyberman. If we get these, I’ll be a very happy whovian :)

Hopefully, we'll get those in the next wave of current era figures. Not sure how that initial wave (13th Doc, Graham, Recon Dalek, Judoon Capt) did financially. We'll have to see. I wouldn't get your hopes up. Dr Who isn't as big as Star Wars and Marvel; those lucky fans get all sorts of deep cut characters for their respective franchises *sigh*.

I' did think of using the Helen Cutter torso for a custom Mel, but the legs are way too long (and the arms would probably need replacing also) as Mel is short and Helen Cutter is towards the taller end of the female Character Options figures.

Ok kinda surprised they haven’t done more New Who figures for overseas fans because like a few other comments have said, a lot of newer fans would want them who missed the action figure wave. We get so many 10th Doctor sonics but hardly any RTD era re realised action figures

A couple of months ago I sent some ideas to Character options and I asked if the could make Ben polly and jamie Silurian from " the silurians" and re release of sea devils and more and the got sent something in Character options since then I have had no reply but you never the could get released soon

Maybe for the journeys end Donna figure they could use the Sarah Jane adventures over coat figure with Martha Jones’ legs and repaint them and maybe a new head sculpt ???

Ideally... A "Heaven Sent" 3 pack with new "Raven" Clara, 12th Doctor with waistcoat & new head sculpt + Burnt/blooded & weathered version, with skull. Tegan (using Peri + new top sculpt) Nyssa (using Leela + new frilly skirt part) Turlough (existing suit) Destiny set with 4th Doctor (tweaked) Tyson (Jack boiler suit body & re-used Scarman head ) new Movellan figure with blaster.

New figures are coming!! I emailed the PR company who manage Character Options’ marketing and they’ve said there’s “two lots of news in the pipeline” and “nothing has been delayed” which is promising!

He's too expensive due to all the colours on his coat. They should do a Real Time version like the original simple version released back in the day.

@@JohnSmith-be1vl I don't think the colors are the issue, it's the models. like the sets of the 4th doctor's companions, got re-released with different colors, they would already have the scans for the colours that they had for the attack of the cybermen and terror of the vervoids versions.

Yeah I hear there was a prototype. I haven't seen the pic. At the mo, CO seem to use existing bodies and add new head/clothing/accessory sculpts. Not sure if they'll release prototype figures; depends on costs/budgets. Maybe they'll keep pushing the boat out and we'll get entirely new figures. *fingers crossed*

@@who-time WhoTime I have a pic of the prototype (supposedly. I bought the talons of weng chiang 4th dr brigadier and auton set a while back and he had 2 right legs, not anything major but kinda funny lol Character are smashing it out of the water with the dr who range, and i really want more daleks, hopefully for the remembrance they do a regular imperial and special weapons dalek and a renegade drone and supreme dalek. I also want to see a gilmore alison and mike and rachel 4 pack as itd be poggers, use jacks revolver and the sterling from the zygon pack Ik mike gilmore Alison rachel are obscure 1 off figures but they are featured in a spin off in big finish i do beleive so thered be some hype for that and it makes sense to have 2 rememberance dalek sets as its the unofficial 25th anniversary serial.

I want Jamie, Victoria and Zoe. I'd also like Sarah Jane in her 'Pyramids Of Mars' dress: and a rifle. An impossible want would be Jago and Litefoot, but I can dream.

Would love those but would require entirely new sculpts (aside from SJS) and the budget and market isn't there in the same way as these massive American franchises. The show needs to be mainstream again, before figures like that can be considered.

@@who-time - Yes, and it's really annoying, isn't it? Years ago, when they released the Kaldorian Sandminer robots, it wasn't long after they were first released, that a new one came out, with light piping for the red eyes, and a swappable 'corpse marker' hand. I was hoping then that we might get a Taren Capel to go with it. Likewise, the 'Suicide Dalek'. Great figure - but no Movellans to go with them. CO have had some really, really random release choices. No, we don't need Pig guards, or a faceless Granny, the latter having no context to anything else. Likewise, Guido, in peg-warmer disguise.

@@who-time To be fair even the SJS would need a new body most likely. The Gelth zombie body a lot of people suggest wears a mid 19th century dress that is almost the opposite shape to SJS's Edwardian dress; they are also too tall. The Missy would be a better base arguably but they'd have to remove the coat and sculpt a new torso piece, and I'd have to look but they may be too tall. To be good they'd also need to sculpt a new rifle. So I think they would have to be a more expensive to make figure for them.

They would be entirely new sculpts, so would be expensive to produce and therefore not cheap to buy. They couldn't do those in £20 B&M sets. If the figure range gets a bigger budget and if the toy market and Dr Who's mainstream popularity recovers, then maybe we stand a chance of getting those. At the mo though, sadly it's unlikely.

I really want some new cybermen figures as seen in nightmare in silver onwards. We know the have an head sculpt because we got handles so it would be great to see them in all their silver glory

I'm surprised we haven't seen a third SJS/Romana wave. We know Fraser Hines was measured for a figure so.... also, where is the Wheel Cyberman?? We know they've done that sculpt. Maybe they are waiting for the animated DVD release?

They certainly could do a 3rd set of SJS & Romanas; would be a lot in a short time though. There are so many prototypes knocking about that never made it to shelves. It's hard to know how many stages are between the prototype and mass production; it's probably still expensive and the budget isn't high for the range at the mo. They could charge £20 a figure then it may be financially viable but the market isn't there like Star Wars & Marvel sadly.

Great video, I definitely like to see all the classic companions released. That seems the route CO appears to be going down, we know prototypes off Jamie and Tegan (in her Logopolis outfit) were made. For Barbara maybe they could use the SJS Bane figure, to make her Space Museum outfit, and swap the legs over with Peri and for Polly use the Jo Grant Brown dress figure, for her 10th Planet costume.

I think a new torso wrap on the series 2 Mickey Smith figure could grant us a Ben and Adric, a new wrap on Leela and we could get a Mawdryn Nyssa (perhaps a bit more of a colourful outfit) the Claudia brown figure could double for an into the dalek Clara Oswald as she does briefly wear a coat with that outfit in the episode, a toby zed and coatless ace figure could provide a celestial toy maker Steven and Dodo, invasion of the bane Sarah Jane body could double for a Space Museum Barbara, Axos Jo Grant for a Faceless Ones Polly perhaps? Martha Jones for Zoe's jumpsuit. I think Jamie could warrant a brand new sculpt sold direct on COs website at a higher price A daffodil auton could be doable with just a new head and hand sculpt, whispermen using the 11th doctor snowmen body. A kerblam man using the 3 doctors brig with a new torso wrap, head and hands, similar to Benton and Yates? I do hope that one day character may have the confidence to do new sculpted figures exclusive to their website, a 1970 silurian, Jamie and 2013 cybermen, zygon and ice warrior would be worthy imo

A Mechanoid re-release could be popular yeah. It's a big thing though. Don't know if they can produce it with a profit in a £20 set.

Not quite accurate: the first and second doctors from the Three Doctors cane im the 11 doctors set, the ones in the 13 doctors set were based on the Web Planet and the Two Doctors respectively

i don't really collect these anymore since the huge purge in 2011 when i was dating a lady and i hadn't much money so sold a ton of figures but I have picked up a couple since like 7B 11th Doctor and Pink-shirted 13th Doc and I'd be quite happy to see some more. Certainly I've liked Nyssa since I was a kid in the 80s so I'd be quite happy buying her figure and if her usual velvety outfit is too much for the budget then i suppooooossssee I'd settle for her in the skimpy dress thing from Terminus :P Also I follow doctor_whoukcustoms on instagram and they customise all sorts of variants from specific episodes and such too. Some cool stuff there.

Yeah, I heard the leaked set names (very exciting!) but they originated from one person on a Facebook group. No one else has ratified this info with their own sources/inside intel.

I think we will be getting a war doctor and tardis set i read a product list and it was labelled. And YES there is other 10 and 6 and 9 Doctor figures they could do@!!!! And i reckon a new captain jack is on the way

Oooooh War Doctor TARDIS tempting! Of course there are variants they can still do for 6 and 10. 9 just changes his jumper lol. For 10, the only one we should have is a blue suit version. For 6, it would be great to have a coatless version from the Two Doctors but that would need an entire new torso and arms, plus a lot of paintwork. New Capt Jack would be cool but I imagine that may come in a current era figure wave, rather than in a B&M set.

How about past companions, Jamie McCrimmon, Adric, Nyssa, Tegan. And yes the Great Chibnall era. The Lone Cyberman, Ruth Doctor and the Waris Hussein Master. I saw more unproduced figures of a Mickey Jones in his full denim getup as seen in the episode Rose. Jackie Tyler(seen in Rose). And the Absorbaloff. Also character option is so lazy and cheap!!! The 12th Doctor has a vest/waist coat. Why couldn’t they just sculpt it on or have a removable piece in it???

Do you remember Forbidden Planet is often quite expensive and stores are much less common than B&M and often have much less stock of particular figures?

@@carn9507 The quality of the figures has seen a marked dip...you have unit soldiers wielding modern assault rifles, you have figures with the bare minimum paint job and you have re releases of figures that look a lot worse than the previous issue....i'm talking about the silver nemesis cybermen. It's maybe the case that forbidden planet refused to stock them owing to the dip in quality.

It's the huge costs of tooling mixed with no guarantee of recouping the costs and making a profit. Dr Who isn't as big as the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, who have much more lavish figure ranges. You're just kidding yourself, if you think Dr Who is as big.

@@who-time I didn't say I thought Dr.Who was as big as either ML or SW, but seeing as you mentioned it Dr.Who still has a dedicated fanbase that does justify the tooling costs. Just means they ned to be more selective with what new sculpts they do release. As far as I'm concerned they wasted valuable tooling costs on any of the latest series figures. The money is in classic who and unless they make available new sculpts then they are not fully making use of the license they have for Dr.Who. If they just keep rehashing the same sculpts all be it with a head swap or different paint app then they are limiting their potential sales for figures collectors do want to see.

@@necromosisx3590 Absolutely, there's a limit to what they can do with existing body sculpts. It means we can't get any new monster figures frustratingly. They'd need to charge £20+ per figure, rather than per set to make a return. I think we'll have to hope Al Dewar's team get a bigger budget. Hoping the last few years of sales have been lucrative enough to at least put genuine new figures on the CO website. Still the recent 13th Doc range has ended up being reduced as has last year's B&M waves, so that's not a good sign.
