I love how the battle scenes all take place in bright beautiful locations, even the one where the Reds realize they've shot a load of child soldiers. In contrast all the love scenes take place in drab dull settings. It's great because it totally subverts the usual cinematic cliches that the weather needs to match the mood.

one of my all time favorite movies,my only disappointment with the film was not playing up the role of Tonya played by the lovely Geraldine Chaplin who becomes his wife,she was important to his childhood developement,it was she who encouraged him to become a doctor and she was completely devoted to him as he was to her,not that I'm setting aside Lara(Julie Christie's role) its just both women were important to him an Tonya's role should have been equally shown.

Julie Christie forever!

My first intro to this film was the Look magazine article about the film, that had Lara looking up in the library w/ her 2 eyes lit in tight rectangle, as Yuri walks in. Such a great visual effect, but then......probably the only bad part of the film......such a trite reaction by Yuri: "How are you ?" Yikes....Mr. Bolt botched that part of the screenwriting. Also, something I've wondered......Yuri runs upstairs to get a blunt instrument to break out the glass at Varykino Castle, so he can see Lara riding off in the distance. Later, as he rides the streetcar and sees Lara walking next to it, he is so close to her, but can't get her attention. Why didn't he break that window, too, to get her attention ? Little details.

Lara's Theme has been so overused in Karoake bars that the soundtrack now gets in the way of the film, as it sounds cliched. I think it still works but the overused them was heavily criticised at the time.

The first time I watched this I thought it was okay, but kind of long and lacking energy. The two lead characters passive and drab, the score forgettable, the sequences too long and the colour palette ugly. Rewatching it more times though I've grown to like this film a fair bit. Firstly the poetic understated performance of the character Yuri I really like now. He's a gentle soul in a violent world. A good man living through horrible times. The central tragedy of the film is that Yuri sympathized with the revolution and believed in equality for all, that's why when the revolution goes all wrong it breaks his heart

No masterpiece, this for me. The strange mixture of accents caused by some rather wayward casting didn't help, but worse for me was the over romanticising of what was really a very tough story, which in turn lead to his worst film, Ryan's Daughter, the seeds of which can be seen here. I liked it rather more the second time I saw it, as I could concentrate more on the key poltical events rather than the rather soppy love story, but it's still not a good Lean. The novel deserved better.

It was an English film for an English audience - keeping original accents would have been alienating. And can we really comment with authority on whether they did not speak like this? Secondly, the film did a brilliant job of capturing the dilemma of the revolution. The romance really kicks in the second half of the film only.
@tonybennett4159

@@TheZMATIN I would have thought that Lean would have considered that he was making a universal film, one based on a great Russian novel by an author who was not allowed to publish the work in the USSR, the manuscript having to be smuggled out in order to be published in the west. Pasternak was also forced to decline the opportunity to collect the Nobel prize for literature. To describe it therefore as an English film for an English audience is a little strange, unless you are intending to say for an English speaking audience, although in subtitled or dubbed versions it was available world wide. Omar Sharif, excellent English speaker that he was, still retained his Arabic accent which meant that he was out of place alongside Christie and Chaplin etc and even Steiger, who all spoke with flawless English accents.
