No matter where you buy your eyeglasses it is always best to have them professionally adjusted to improve their fit and comfort. It will help you see better too.
If you are looking to purchase prescription glasses online, it is important to continue seeing your eye doctor yearly for eye health evaluations. Although you may be seeing well, many eye diseases may creep up without affecting your eyesight until it's too late.

Where I live there are hundreds of optical stores, I have used eyeglasses for a long time and although I visited almost all of them, none of them honestly clarified the difference between the materials. They just told me that polycarbonate was the best material against scratches (which is why I always chose it) when in reality it is not, in addition to putting more emphasis on trying to sell treatments that are not so important. I always trusted their opinion as professionals but the 80% of them (or they employees) only have the mentality of merchants ... it was not until now that I began to learn more thanks to content like this and decide for myself which product is suitable. Thank you very much !

Yup I can’t believe I kept listening to them. I got glasses with polycarbonate lenses that were recommended for me, and it made my eyes look small and distorted, even got headaches. That was until I did more researched and ordered high index glasses from Ray-Ban to accommodate my higher prescription and it made such a huge difference. My eyes look less distorted, and I don’t get fatigue anymore. I used to hate wearing glasses for this particular reason, now I actually wear them everyday lol

I've been wearing glasses since I was a year old. Since I was a kid, I could see that distortion you talked about on the edges of my strong polycarbonate lenses, but the eye doctor just told me that I must be imagining it, because apparently gaslighting children is acceptable. It's there, and it's why I wear contacts as much as possible.

So much great information in this video. 😊 7:53 Something to be aware of with high index lenses is that, the higher the index the lower the Abbe value, which means you're going to see more chromatic aberration (colour fringing) around the edges of the lenses. Some high index lenses have an Abbe value as low as 31, which isn't great for the clarity of the lens.

I have a question just changed from rectangular lenses to oval and with first time blue light and already have had them for almost two weeks and on the side of the lenses I see blurry and in the front I see perfectly fine. What do you think it might be?
@slipknot19968
@slipknot19968 2 жыл бұрын
It could be a “base curve” issue. Sometimes going from rectangular frame into that oval can add more curvature to the material. This is something that can be fixed, if your optical shop has control over their lenses (most do). A blue light filter (or most other coatings) have very little effect on your overall quality of vision. Finally if the base material of your lens has changed it could also be that you aren’t adapting. I’ve worked in optical for 2 1/2 years in a specialists office. The only real answer to your question is to talk to your DOCTOR or OPTICIAN. They will be able to give you an actual answer. The things I suggested above are only the cases I typically see.

@@MiteshDamania your issue could also be material based, or even rx based. Your rx is a little on the high side. Sometimes high myopes don’t like Cyl changes. You’ll definitely have to talk to your doctor and optician, they’ll be able to show you what changes you had since your last visit/purchase.

I've worn glasses and contacts all my life. I've found as an adult, letting the provider be in charge of everything is just not an option anymore. I had one provider just out of school, really push me for monovision contacts. Seeing one distance in one eye, and one in another. I told her no, that drives me absolutely crazy, but she continued to push it, telling me how much I would love it. But I refused. When I get my contacts? Guess what the prescription was. I was furious to have wasted my money on something that I ended up going to another doctor and starting all over again to get what I needed. You have to find someone you can trust, who you can respect, and who respects you and your needs and will listen. I've found an awesome provider recently, and will never change. Check the reviews, due your due diligence, and get educated. And find that respect factor. It makes a huge difference.

Interesting, but as far as materials you left one out. You can tell me about plastic, but with 50 years of trying all the different lenses, I still like glass. With my high Rx, I do end up with thick and heavy lenses. I also like large lenses that help with my side vison, so the edges have got real thick. I still like the quality and durability of real glass. Takes longer, but it is worth it.

Thanks for such an informative video Dr. Allen! I had wondered what Trivex lenses were. Didn't get glasses until age 42, so went straight to Progressives. What could be better than a lens that has every different section allow you to have perfect vision depending on where you're looking? I understand for people who don't start out with them it takes some getting used to. But since they were the first lenses I wore they were a natural for me. Love photochromatic Transitions lenses, as well! The new XtraActive versions are great for people with light sensitivity. They always have the slightest tint and then change tint readily with the strength of the light they're exposed to. Although I have regular transitions as well. I do have non photochromatic lenses for indoors or night time, especially for night driving. 😎

Jenny: Until my cataract surgery, I used to wear contacts, and I had a high prescription like yours. I could only ever wear gas permeable hard contact lenses. With a high prescription the soft lenses they gave me to try once buckled in every time I blinked, and my vision blurred. (The thinner the lenses are in the middle and thicken at the edges the higher your prescription gets.) I assume that is still true today, and that hard contacts are your only option. But if you have dry eyes, you probably will not like contacts. However, at high prescriptions, contacts are usually the only way to see well. You probably also know you are more at risk for retinal tears due to your elongated eye, and when you do eventually need cataract surgery, you may need to get anterior chamber lenses as your zonules will be too weak to hold your artificial lenses in place, and they will slip to the back of your eye (right away or after a number of years if he holds them in place with rings). I'm giving you important information your eye doctor may not know as they don't encounter this so often when doing cataract surgery and may not be used to all the problems this causes. Make sure you do a lot of reading before you make any decisions when you do need cataract surgery.

Hey Danilo. Thanks for sharing that. Tough to say why you are seeing the blue field entoptic phenomenon after all that. But very interesting because I see it too. (really want to do a video on that). Floaters are more common after any eye surgery, particularly a retinal surgery. But changes to the vitreous gel and growth of floaters do often cause retinal tears as well.

Dr. Allen, I am really hoping you will make a video about "progressive lens options", especially those that are digitally designed. My recent discussions with a number of opticians were about new digital progressive lenses, supposedly superior (and more costly) than earlier ones. They were described as being "top tier" or "premiere" because they are individually designed for a patient's specific prescription, and have a better range of vision levels than older lenses. What are your thoughts about this new technology? Really hoping to hear your perspective before I purchase :-). Thank you.

Hi, recently I got myself a pair of polycarbonate lenses, it has been just like 3 months and I have noticed there are small salt-like, little dots on the lenses, may I ask what are those dots and are they normal? Also, I have also noticed scratches on my new polycarbonate lenses just in 3 months time, while my old cheap plastic glasses took like 1 or 2 years time to see some noticeable scratches... are polycarbonate lenses much more prone to scratches than the plastic glasses?
@spajdude
@spajdude 2 жыл бұрын
Polycarbonate is softer than CR-39 "plastic" lenses and will scratch more easily. Don't be fooled by the cheaper price of CR-39, as this polymer has much higher optical quality than polycarbonate and high index lenses. The refractive index and Abbe value of CR-39 are pretty much the same as optical crown glass. Opt. Crown Glass - Index: 1.523 Abbe: 58.5 CR-39 - Index: 1.498 and Abbe: 59.3 Polycarb - Index: 1.586 and Abbe: 30 High Index - Index: 1.6 - 1.74 Abbe: 32 - 42

High index are expensive and if you have a high prescription you will benefit tremendously from a lighter and more responsive lens. The extra cost in that case is definitely worth it. If you have a low prescription like most people have, you won’t see any appreciable difference from a standard lens.

I recently ordered my first glasses, I use glasses only indoors in front of a computer and sometimes for reading books. Despite my use case, the seller pushed to "Upgrade" for polycarbonate lenses, in case I decide to do sports in my computer glasses. After this video, I understood that for my use case, polycarbonate has only disadvantages - optical quality and scratch resistance for polycarbonate are worse than for CR-39. The cost was not a big issue, I was ready to pay extra since I spent 10+ hours in front of a computer screen every day. I ordered cheaper alternative CR-39 lenses, +1.0 and +1.5, and some special "Eyezn" coating with blue light blocking that is designed for computer use. I am very satisfied, needed those glasses for a couple of years if not longer. All that consultant told me is that polycarbonate is overall better than cr-39, so I should upgrade to that material. After this video, I understood that standard cr-39 lenses have other advantages on top of cheaper prices, but sellers will tend to "upsell" more expensive options no matter what your use case is.

You neglected to mention glass as an option for lenses. I have and still do use glass in my bifocals with photochromatic transition lenses. Because of the environment I work in, they last without scratches and dings. Plus, the transition works in glass better than other materials, unless things have changed in that regard since I last checked. BTW, I have to special order and as far as I can tell there is only one company that still makes prescription glass lenses.

I have -3 in my left eye and -2.75 in my right eye and I've bought a new pair of glasses with a higher index, 1.57 because on my old glasses, my lenses were a little bit thick. I can't stand at all the new, thinner lenses at all. They are lighter and I love that but I've stopped wearing them because I see very spherically on the lenses' edges and the image of the world seems further, like objects seem smaller and further away from me. Even when I would look at my phone, it appears smaller and 3D 2.0, which means that I see the screen rounder, 3D like. Also, my eyes look smaller, like my prescription would be higher, but is the same as on my old glasses which I'm currently wearing. I just changed the thickness of the lenses. Why is this happening? Is it because I don't need higher index?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 3 жыл бұрын
Very good question. Typically, I don't hear those types of issues unless the power/base curve of the lens has changed or the vertex distance of the lenses have changed too. I wonder if there is a difference in base curve to the lenses, although the power has been kept the same.

I can see distances during the day but have some trouble seeing at night. I've been using generic reading glasses for basic tasks but prescription glasses for photo editing at the computer. My viewing distance from the monitor is 40". These prescriptions no longer work and need a new set. Not only that but I can no longer see the LCD screen of my camera so I'm constantly lowering and raising my reading glasses to interact with my camera. I'm thinking perhaps I'm a candidate for progressives and given that I'm working on visually demanding projects I would need the lowest distortion lenses. I also may need two sets, prescription sunglasses and one for indoor use.

I watched this video to see if actual glass was mentioned. Not surprised it wasn't. I'm one of the few people who still gets glass lenses. My optician has to have them sent out to a special lab to have them made. It doesn't cost any more but you do have to wait about two weeks. My reason for sticking with glass? Well, when you buy the plastic lenses you get recommended all kinds of coatings to make them "non-scratch". You have to pay extra for this. In other words, you have to pay more to get plastic lenses that are up to the standards of glass, and they're still not up to the standard because even with the coatings they're easier to scratch than glass. Two main arguments against glass is that they may crack, break or shatter. I've been wearing glasses since I was 12 years old, which is about 50 years, and have broken every part of a pair of glasses you can break, but I have never, not once, broken or even cracked a lens. And I've worn glasses playing sports and doing heavy, physical labor. Eye glass lens glass is much stronger than you'd think and I bet stronger than plastic. The other argument is that glass is heavy. What, maybe a half ounce heavier than plastic? Big deal. Maybe it's because I'm old and not convinced that everything new is automatically an improvement but I don't see a single advantage that plastic has over glass, and not only do you get an inferior product, but you pay more for it. No thanks.

I have two pairs, one is fixed mostly just for astigmatism and fairly standard, but I'm farsighted, and find they don't do things quite right for near use at long amounts of time. I had Activate Progressive lenses as a teen, but couldn't wear them outside very well since I couldn't see the ground when hiking, so I didn't want that, but I just got newer ones not too long ago that are whatever the new name for Activate is, but with lesser magnification, Crizal lenses, and the computer coating, which are fantastic! They're great for detailed things like hand sewing and using the computer, which is really important for online school, and thankfully insurance covered quite a bit. I like having two pairs of glasses athough it sucks that I can't wear my reading glasses with contacts in, that would be easy. But no contacts exist that are weak enough for my right eye, so having one contact lens isn't ideal for long amounts of time anyway, so I only wear it when I'm using sunglasses, or going places where I don't want to deal with glasses.
