Electrical stimulation for MS is a topic that I get asked about quite frequently, and for good reason! In today's video, I am interviewing Garrett Salpeter! We talk about new research on the Neubie device that was specifically performed in people with MS. So we'll get an idea on how effective it is and benefits for those with MS.

I just went to PT that had the Nuebie. I loved it and can’t wait to go back. They did a “master reset”.

Several people have asked how the Neubie compares to Cionic or Bioness. I used the Neubie weekly for 2 years with my local PT. I also have a Cionic and a WalkAid (similar to Bioness calf cuff). In my opinion you can't even compare the Neubie to these others. The Neubie works more in the background while the others are more functional and stimulate particular muscles at the right time during the gait cycle. If I had to choose one, I'd go with the Neubie because it got the spasticity out of the way and improves strengthening. While I was using that, I stopped taking spasticity meds, stopped using the other devices and was getting around much better.

Unfortunately seems neufit only available in Austin, TX. I went to specific PT place in Houston, TX for PPMS as confirmed over the phone using neufit but after several sessions was told is only available in Austin.

HI Gretchen, I enjoyed the podcast. I was wondering how the Neubie compares to the Cionic? I realize the Cionic is something you purchase and use at home as opposed to the Neubie which is used at a health care facility, but do they work the muscles and create new neuro pathways in the same way? Thank you.

So glad you enjoyed the podcast episode! I actually interviewed Jeremiah Robison of Cionic as well! You can find that episode here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b-B4aNly0pOngqc.htmlsi=yPBJcG0U9MciDibL

@@DoctorGretchenHawley Yes, I did see that, I was wondering though, what your opinion is as to which device would be more helpful for retraining the brain to make new neuro pathways.

How does the Neubie compare to the Bioness?
@DoctorGretchenHawley

The biggest difference is the type of current in each one - the Neubie uses direct current and Bioness using alternating current. This affects our muscles differently.

I went to school with physical therapist assistance while I did my massage therapy certificate and we took the same courses while they practiced on me with the electric current so I say heck no to those. I’ve tried different things since then. When was to help with footdrop I can’t remember what it’s called but to me it was like an electrical shock and it kind of hurt.

It feels different for everyone! Some people are super sensitive to any type of electrical stimulation to the point where it hurts to increase it to a level where it would help lift the ankle. Other people feel fine increasing the stimulation to that level. As with all things… It’s best to listen to your own body and work with an in person physical therapist to determine the best settings for you and your goals .
