I don't own all the Volca's but out of the many I do own this one along with the FM, Nubass, and the Drum do I want to own both of but I digress; this is the one I've been most addicted to in regards to finding the right tutorials on KZfaq, experimenting with to discover some secrets (I know something about the wave guide I believe most people don't know about), and locking down how to really create dual sounds through the part layers. It's a very inexpensive and powerful piece of gear I think any electronic music producer should own (along with the FM). It's also the sexiest of all the Volca's.

Just got my vdrum a couple hours ago and was getting disappointed with the workflow and more specifically not understanding it. This video helped so much, you really make great tutorials. I felt like i knew what to do as you were teaching it, even started understanding more stuff just from the understanding i got from this first part. You are a natural teacher, its a shame you never got into education as a career because some people have a natural ability to teach and youre one of them. I cant thank you enough as you made my new purchase way more exciting and satisfying without any of the frustration i was having just trying to use it based off the manual. I'll be doing part 2 tomorrow after work when i can get some real time on it, cant wait. Subbed. Thank you again😊

Good video, it takes awhile to get the hang of this device. When you're editing one of the layers and trying to determine what the factory setting was for a particular parameter (Level, for example), if you turn the knob very slowly you will see a "-" dash to the right of the number, which indicates that is the factory setting. You can do this to find out all the settings except the 3 SRC, MOD and EG parameters which if you change you have to re-load the kit to see what they were before. Also, this functionality is hard to use because the dash only displays for 1 second (arghh!), but it's the only way you can know for sure what a setting was when the kit was last stored, I've used it quite a bit. I think this was in Undulations' series. Nice job!
@thisriver
@thisriver 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that ever elusive dash! it helps a lot, it will also show you where you left your own saved parameters. The best tool by far to look at parameters on the Volca is Oscillator Sink's SYNTHMATA page (free volca drum editor). Check it out, he's got a video here on YT showing how it works.
@geraldclark5812
@geraldclark5812 3 жыл бұрын
@@thisriver I can't tell you how many hours I've spent trying to get the "dash setting" for a particular parameter, Part 5 on Kit 4 for example (Layer 2 to be exact, the default Level on Layer 1 is 0 so only Layer 2 is audible), how do they do that wobble? I'm actually wondering if there's a "bug" where it won't display the Mod Amount setting, because I've carefully (sooo carefully) turned the knob for every setting from -25 to -100, and no dash ever appears. The Mod Rate setting is definitely 94, above -25 the Mod Amount doesn't sound right, but the reassuring "-" never appears for this setting, the only explanation I can think of is that it's set to something off the scale (like -101) so the dash never displays. If you're listening Korg, please give us another second to look at a parameter before switching back to the "Lay 1" or "Lay 2" display, it would REALLY help! The other point I wanted to make is that recently Tony Horgan has released a Google e-book (now in hard copy on Lulu.com as well) on Volca Drum, it has lots of recipes for different drum sounds, and I've also used Synthmata although I try to avoid interacting with my devices via computer. Tony also released a YT vid where he creates several basic drum sounds, which I would have loved to have seen when I was first getting started. By now I have other ways of getting basic drum sounds if I need them, and VD is really just for seeing how far I can mangle the Wave Guide, so much fun!
@thisriver
@thisriver 3 жыл бұрын
@@geraldclark5812 I overwrote the factory defaults a while back so I can't hear for myself the wobble you mention. How about sending that patch to Synthmata and see if the editor solves the mystery. Thanks for sharing, I will check out Tony Horgan's book.

Thank you for this tutorial! It is very valuable to have the basics down before doing the crazy/wacky things shown in other advanced tutorials. Good to know the drum can be a normal drum machine if you want it to :-)
