We're actually remarkably strong (especially bone it is ounce for ounce stronger than steel) but there are limits. An average adult femur can support the full weight of 5 standard pickup-trucks in a vertical press, skin can withstand any surface temperature naturally found on earth for given periods of time, we posses the greatest endurance of any land creatures (yes if you trained enough you can beat any other animal in distance just not speed) due to the way we sweat, the way our bones can restructure with training, the way our feet are built, the way our muscle structure can adapt, the way our joint cartilage can repair itself and the way our cardiovascular system adapts. All that said, however; we are not immune to trauma. A paint can to the face might look small and simple but that is a few pounds and metal smashing into your face at quite a few fps followed by you falling a few more feet at a couple fps and smacking the back of your skull against the hard ground. I'll try to explain more without getting too wordy... It's not that you would be sure to die immediately but rather (in the event of traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage for example... bleeding in the brain) the tissues of the brain are being placed under increasing pressure as more and more blood leaks out which decreases the amount of blood that can flow through your brain (not because you're losing blood too fast to pump it but because blood can't flow through the capillaries being placed under all that pressure from blood displacing the tissue) so the person can die in minutes not because of the injury itself but because their brain is no longer receiving oxygen because blood can't be pumped in with the increased pressure. And that's not even mentioning structural damage to the brain tissue. Sorry if that got a little dense.

@@yarpen26 well it really depends on how one falls and lands that will determine your injuries if you are only jumping off a ledge 5-6 feet in height onto concrete, I have done something similar falling off or a 8-10 feet tall cago container as a kid onto hard pact dirt and because I rolled I only ended up with bruising and getting the wind knocked out of me so I could not breathe properly for like 10-20 seconds.

The weird thing about that claim is that if you watch the “making of” materials for this movie you find that the stunt guys actually took those falls and managed to work unharmed. What she said was just ridiculous. I’ve had patients in the hospital who fell down concrete steps and they were ALL KINDS OF MESSED UP.....but not paralyzed or forced to use a colostomy bag. It could go that poorly, I guess, under just the right circumstances.....but she sounded too certain.

It feels the same as being stung by a bee or a wasp, but if you slap your back, you only react with pain if you see a wasp flying away, because the implications are much worse than being pinched, as you have a sharp needle going through you. I've actually had this happen to me ... you know you're injured but the brain blocks it until you see and can't deny its a real injury. In my early teens I had a bicycle crash and knew there was some throbbing in my foot but refused to look at it until I had walked out of the parking lot the incident happened to the sidewalk. Then looked at my foot. When my fast moving bike crashed it ended up dragging my feet for a bit, the friction of 'road burn' actually tore through the sandal and took off a top layer of skin about 2 in long, 1 in wide. (thankfully only topmost layer, not deeper) Having seen it, then the mild throbbing turned into sheering pain.

Empathy. Humans tend to sympathise with others pain and imagining that pain themselves. The more realistic the more sympathetic pain would we feel. Stepping on a nail is something we would view as realistic.
