Last year I was working in a general med-surg ward (I’m a nurse). An old guy came in to prep for a routine surgery the next day (having his pacemaker battery changed). When we were checking him in and doing his head to toe assessment we asked him to take his beanie off and saw an area of white, strange looking skin on the top of his head, probably about 10cm x 5cm big. We asked him what it was and he said “oh I fell over a few days ago and bumped my head on the end of my bed, it’s probably a bruise”. We weren’t convinced so we got a pair of forceps and started prodding at it. I pulled back in horror when I tapped it and realised the area was all EXPOSED BONE. He had ripped the skin off the top of his head and had been walking around for 3 days with his skull open to the world. He ended up with a severe bone infection and it took months and lots of surgeries and grafts for us to close the wound. Worst part was he had showed it to his son (who lived with him) and the son said it was nothing to worry about and simply covered it up with a bit of gauze and the beanie. We had a lot of questions for that family.

Oh no. I missed this one- Anyway my mum works in a radiation therapy treatment ward. One day another nurse had to change a patient's head bandage, when she found maggots crawling inside the patient head and had to ask my mum for help with cleaning the wound, and I'm pretty sure the patient said something like it happens alot or it cleans the wound.

Only the previous night from my writing this, I had a resident at my work who complained that she felt like she couldn't breathe. I was thinking well yes, love you can because you are talking to me normally. So I questioned her. While listening to her chest, she nudged me and told me her chest was hurting. My gut was telling me, call this one seriously this is really very not good. So I called my superior, they said call NOK and get consent for transport and then call it. As I was, she was pailing slowly. The ambos found she was having a heart attack and she was out of there in ten minutes and straight to the cath lab. Was getting phone calls all night from ED and cardio docs telling me that this resident needs a stand. It took several hours after my shift ended for me to fully realised that in the absence of humility and in the full light of the facts, I saved that woman's life. It was the fastest transfer ever. I also once had a resident who was circling the lounge at three am, all confused and disoriented. Her BP was not measurable with a standard monitor it was so high. She c.o a mild headache. I called it, ambos arrived and told me without taking any data, that this could have waited till morning. Later that day, while I'm sleeping I get a phone call from the RN telling me her kidney function was down and she would have been passed out or dead if I had left it till morning. I'm thinking boy some ambos suck. One time I had a small spider set off a smoke alarm...

I'm a nurse, seen some crazy shit. Old ladies laughing making snow angels motions on the floor, a man breaking a window and threatening us with glass and having to call the police, a woman pulling a bed apart and using the metal from the bed as a weapon. Shit snail trails into the bathroom through a man's sock and all up the wall and side of the toilet (at 6:30am an hour before I went home), people with alcohol withdrawl or opiod addicts swearing and yelling at you for drugs. Plus your general everyday cleaning up blood, piss, vomit and shit. Dressing nasty looking wounds. I love my job it never gets boring.

My mother is a PCA at a retirement home. There was this resident with pretty severe dementia walking around the facility holding some old dry poo she must have kept somewhere for awhile. My mother asked her if she could take that from her, the resident screamed NO ITS MINE! Then mum left her with it for a bit only for the resident to hide it behind the suggestion box which was transparent in the front entrance. I worked in the same facility as a Food Service Assistant. This Karen berated me about this juicer a resident had that just passed away that she was looking for. It was some cheap plastic piece of shit juicer. I told her the kitchen doesn’t deal with any dishes the resident owns. She just got more bitchy. She eventually found it in the residents room. I understand she lost someone not that long ago but fuck sake I was annoyed. When she said she found it she kind of half assed an apology while still showing some attitude, so I just scoffed at her and give her the rudest look I could then returned to work. Usually I am more understanding but she caught me on a bad day and was just too much of an asshole for me to care.

My parents are both doctors. Most bizarre story they ever told me came from my Mum. She was doing a term in NZ in 1978. Paramedics had been called to the house of a morbidly obese person. And when I say obese I’m talking like 300kg. This person had either been sitting on a chair or lying on a bed or something, and it broke and they fell down into a corner and got stuck. That is they were literally so big that they couldn’t physically get themselves up from this position. The person they were with had called emergency because the person fell unconscious and had stopped breathing. The paramedics struggled to move this person out of the corner and help them but by the time they got to them they had already suffocated under their own weight. Not a good way to die.

I have to take prescription medication for them that are expensive but thank God I have insurance and only have a copay 🙌 I also get pre-migraine symptoms and post-migraine symptoms. It totally sucks. It sucks to the point I had to get on disability because of them. They are a serious bish! 😰

Okay, so i figured you might need a funny medical story after all that shit (lel). I have been in inpatient psych a few times, and one time this lady (who was very well known for being attention seeking) was at the nurses station trying to get opiates for a headache and was yelling at the nurses. They wouldn't give her any but did offer panadol/neurofen apparently this wasn't good enough so she started crying/screaming and then proceeded to chuck herself on the floor and throw a tantrum like a 3yo, arms and legs wailing about. Best bit was the nurses came out of the office, saw her on the floor, shrugged their shoulders and just stepped over her. She eventually must have realised she wasn't going to get what she wanted and got up, turned back to the window and asked the nurses for the panadol/neurofen 😂

Sounds boring, but I've heard everything from someone using the display home toilet, which had plastic wrap over it, to a couple who had graduated the month before, were already pregnant, and thought they could negotiate their way into a house with 5 bedrooms, 2 floors & 3 parking spaces, all while trying to keep up with University.

After that, you need to ask people to send you in jokes to try and lighten the mood for you. If you decide that you want to ask for jokes, I'll give you your first one....This police officer is on patrol one night, and it's getting close to midnight, so he decides to drive up to the local lover's lane, to see if there is anyone up there doing things they shouldn't be doing. When he gets there, there is only one car parked there....the interior lights are on....there is a guy sitting in the front seat reading a magazine, and a girl sitting in the back seat filing her fingernails. The cop thinks to himself, "This is weird. Why would they be up here doing that?" So the cop parks his car and walks over to this guy's car and knocks on the driver's window. The guy rolls down the window and says, "Yes sir officer?" The cop says, "what are you doing?" The guy replies, "I'm reading a computer magazine sir." The cop points to the back and asks, "What is she doing?" The guy replies, "She's filing her fingernails, sir." The cop thinks to himself, "This doesn't make any sense", so the cop asks the guy, "how old are you son?" The guy replies, "I'm 22, sir." The cop points to the back and asks, "How old is she?" The guy looks at his watch and says, "She'll be 18 in eleven minutes."

I once had a kid refuse medicine because it was yuck (understandable). But then didn’t want to have water to wash it down because the water was too spicy. Btw I found this all out by listening in on the nurses conversation while I was in the emergency department.
