With the sheep, lambs and dogs in the background as the Doctor drives off in Bessie, it feels quite a strong and emotional scene. On The Green Death DVD commentary, Katy Manning actually cries at that scene. I think it is because this was the first time she had seen it since Jon Pertwee sadly passed away in 1996. This was officially a children's show. This shows how subtle and deep it could be. Earlier in the story the Doctor says that whilst a human can spend their entire life with him, he can never do the same with them. He is doomed to always see his friends and adopted family either leave or die. Here the Doctor clearly finds parting from Jo unbearable, and has to get away, as he doesn't want to spoil her happiness or make her feel guilty at leaving him. The way he drives off into a cold winter sunset alone emphasises that he is in the end an outsider, an alien, a very old and very lonely one at that. It's a lovely but very sad scene, and a tribute to the immense rapport that Jon Pertwee and Katy Manning had established and reflected in their characters. It's often said that the sad death of Roger Delgado and then Katy Manning leaving the show strongly influenced Jon Pertwee's own decision to quit. He clearly loved being the Doctor, and lived the part when attending conventions and so on.

I was an eight year old girl in June 1973, when this episode was broadcast. Jo Grant was my first favourite companion (called an assistant in those days). I watched the Doctor say goodbye to my beloved Jo in this memorable scene and I was heartbroken, when she left to get married. The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) was my favourite from the Classic series. When Tom Baker took over the role in 1974, I was still expecting Pertwee to walk through the door at any moment. Katy Manning, who played Jo Grant, is the only surviving actor to play a companion during Pertwee's tenure. Jo Grant and Sarah Jane Smith will always be my favourite companions from the classic series and I love them equally. Best wishes, Katy and thank you for making Jo such a beautiful and memorable character. Thank you, BBC, for sharing this beautiful and memorable scene.

Jo had perhaps one of the saddest on screen departures for the classic series, one that at the time was particularly rare. Sometimes companions are left behind, forced to leave, or, in the saddest and rarest of cases, die. But Jo, she did something different, she found a reason to stay behind. She is having an adventure that the Doctor couldn't have, finding someone she wants to share her life with, someone she can have adventures with, someone she can start a family with, and someone she could grow old with. Jo was the definitive companion for the Third Doctor, the one who had the most on screen adventures with them.

The silence in this scene makes it so emotionally impactful, this is what New Who doesn’t dare to do for all the wrong reasons. However, New Who has its fair share of emotional moments as well, many much more than this, the approach that this takes to a companion departure is better than any New Who has produced for that same field. I seem to be one of the few people who didn’t feel upset at Rose’s departure, for example... but this just nails it

This is what you get when everyone involved truly loves the art that they are creating. This is shot like a film and conveys so much with little to no dialogue towards the end. The departure of the companion has weight to it that wasn’t always the case in classic who.

The writing here is EXEMPLARY. Jon deflects Joe's question with a joke "Mind? He may even make a scientist out of you". The sadness in the conversation becomes so apparent when they both joke about "Saving a piece of Wedding cake".. a clandestine admission that they both accept that this is the last time they will ever see each other, & that they'd rather joke about it because it's just too painful to speak frankly otherwise; which would ruin the party & the relationship. The look on Jon's face is one of "Odi Et Amo". As the old poem goes... "I Love, & Hate. Why I do this? Perhaps you ask? I do not know. But I sense it is happening, & I am Tortured." He realises that in putting Jo's feelings before his own; the act of love perhaps? He is destroying himself. And the only distraction from this recurring existence... is discovery. ...The key enters the Tardis once more.

Nu Hu is a joke. Capaldi didn't take long to sense that it was The Steven Mofftwat show. And that unlike the people in this era who let Pat, Jon & Tom develop their character freely, Capaldi isn't given ANY say in what his says, how he utters it, & how much music is banging away over the top; casting aspersions on his acting ability. NOTE: There is NO gay music hamming the scenes up. Telling the audience how they should be feeling. The actors here are allowed to do their jobs & give a timeless performance. Moffat has NEVER understood this.

This scene was absolutely beautiful but Davies did the emotional music thing even more dramatically than Moffat. He practically set the precedent for the trend. Also, the final scenes of the Zygon Inversion, parts of Heaven Sent and Hell Bent completely lose the music just to showcase Capaldi and Coleman's performance so condemning Moffat for this isn't completely fair anymore.

I agree. The Term you use.. Nuance.. is very apt. It is a sign that the middle class has really shrunk. And that subtlety is utterly lost on a generation who have the attention span of a Guinea pig. Art has suffered more than anywhere else. And it so apparent in Dr Who.

@mr.barcode3186
@mr.barcode3186 7 жыл бұрын
Ha! The goodbye scene for Rose is so overrated. The entire thing is overblown and the Doomsday score was only there to make it seem even more overly emotional. In most of, no, all of the reaction videos I watched for that scene, everyone was crying and saying it was the saddest moment in the show's history. I always hated both the 10th Doctor and Rose, but their romance was so cringe worthy that I want to throw up just thinking about it. The whole scene has no subtlety whatsoever... it's just Rose sobbing while the Doctor tries and fails to hold it together. It's so pathetic. When I saw Rose's goodbye scene I felt no emotion whatsoever (except maybe irritation). Yet when I later watched this scene, the ending of The War Games, and many other classic companion exits I got a bit teary-eyed.

It's a fab expression (from Jon Pertwee - a comedic actor) of the love that can never be expressed. You can see it in Anastasia with Yul Brynner and Ingrid Bergmann. One thing I will say - I have all the Dr Who episodes that I can find on VHS and when my daughter, now 16, was little she loved the Jon Pertwee episodes more than ever. "He's just more of a person than the rest of them are!@ And I think that was true. Jon Pertwee was incredibly human and British upper lip whether that's good or bad. He got us through the 3 day week (and my parents were young at the time and loved it, even when there was no video signal so they could only have the Green Death on audio!) Is it any wonder my daughter's favourite Doctor is, apart from Jon, Peter Capaldi?

Good for Doctor #3! I always found his never drinking to be a bit prim. I seem to recall someone offering Doctor #4 a drink and he opted for a "ginger pop" instead. I always thought Jo had a bit of a crush on the Doctor and I think he knew it He was older, elegant, and sophisticated and was incredibly charming. But he was just inaccessible to her. He was basically her boss and there was just too much of a power imbalance in their relationship. She had much less agency than Sarah Jane or Romana did. So she married Cliff because he reminded her of the Doctor.
@tomnorton4277

I think the crush might have been mutual, not from the Doctor but from Jon Pertwee himself. He knew he was too old for Katy Manning so, assuming I'm not pulling the idea that he fancied her out of my arse, I think Jon used that to his advantage in order to make the Doctor seem inaccessible to Humans as far as romance is concerned.
