Ask any experienced genealogist what they wish they knew when they first got started, most of them will tell you they wish they had documented their research. You may be brand new to Ancestry and have just started building your family tree. Those shaky leaves may have taken you on a journey through time, up branches and down rabbit holes. But, you are going to get stuck. Or confused. Or try to reach out for help. And the first question you will be asked is, "What documentation do you have for that?" Join Crista Cowan for a beginner's look at what we mean when we say, "Document your research."

I've been researching my family tree for many years and I've found that no matter how much you think you know, you can always learn more. I had no idea about the note feature in Ancestry! I've been using comments and the description section this whole time! Thank you so much for this video and for that piece of information. I can't wait to get into my tree and start transferring everything into the notes.

Last Wed I went to the NYC Heath Vital Records Offices at Worth St and was informed that as of Jan 12th, 2015, Death and Birth records for non direct family members are no longer being issued for family history purposes (Genealogy Research). I was looking for Birth and Death Cert. for Aunts and Uncles who are all deceased as are my grandparents. the reason given is that the Heath Dept. as I understand it is protect living folks and prevent Identity theft. Have you or others doing research in NYC run into this yet? The records at Worth St are for births after 1910 and deaths after 1949. Tough to Document past family members when you can not critical records. Any suggestions - Bob

You are perhaps at 1840. This is the point at which genealogy gets tough for most cultures. Get an advanced genealogy book called The Red Book or The Source. They will guide you.
