Machrie Moor, Prehistoric Complex, Isle of Arran, Scotland.
Machrie Moor is one of the most important prehistoric sacred ceremonial landscapes in Scotland. Human activity has been going on from 6000BC. Here you will find Stone Circles and Standing Stones which have been left behind from the Neolithic and Bronze Age. A one and a half mile walk into the moorland takes us back in time were we can walk in the footsteps of our ancestors and visit a tangible legacy of magical ancient remains. This short film takes a journey through Machrie Moor.

I hope to return to Machrie Moor this year and make a better film on the complex, it is not as well known as Kilmartin, Ness of Brodgar or Callanish.

The giant's graves above Glenashdale falls is worth a visit as the trees have been felled and suddenly the site makes sense and the view is amazing.

Hi Fiona, there is a video on the Giant's Graves on my channel, you will find it in the Ayrshire & Arran section. On my first visit to the site in 2006 it was completely surrounded by trees but on my last visit in 2018 all the trees were cut down and now you can see Holy Isle, the Ayrshire coast and Goat Fell. Thanks, Martin.

Excellent information and video, thanks. Found this after recommendation from 'Britain On A Budget' channel. I've visited and enjoyed Machrie Moor, indeed all of Arran. One of my all-time favourite photos is a monochrome of my 3 year old grandson casting his shadow on one of the biggest of these ancient stones. Atb...Terry (subscribed too).

I was just wondering, where does the numbering come from? They are not in order as you would approach the sites from the West to East so it must be something else. Brilliant film by the way.

Hi GreenDragon, I also was wondering about the numbering of these sites, I think Machrie Moor 11 is also known as Machrie Moor 6. I may look into this in the future. Thanks for your kind words on the film, I am glad you enjoyed it, Martin.

Hi Martin, I'm always amazed at the density of prehistoric sites on Arran! Was it a particularly active place - or is it just that more sites have survived because there was less activity (and less farming) later on? Thanks for the great videos, Sibylle.
@BeforeCaledonia
@BeforeCaledonia 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sibylle, most of the ancient sites on Arran are on the bottom half of the Island. I think the Machrie Moor sites have survived well because they were covered in peat as was the case at Callanish and Kilmartin Glen, Martin.

I never came across any information regarding where the stone was quarried, I mentioned in the film the standing stones are sandstone. I might go into the geology of Arran in future videos. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

@@BeforeCaledonia you're stuff is cool dude, I have a degree in Scottish History, it's good to see someone think outside the box, I think they are ceremonial calendars, and a path, directional pathways up and down the country, meeting points. Have you been to achnabreck? Iv'e done the whole of Kilmartin Gl en etc I think they might be constellations and star maps, they have found similar believe it or not in Mexico.

I am an amateur enthusiast, Before Caledonia is a passion hobby, I do my own research and enjoy photographing and filming the sites. Machrie Moor has got a summer solstice sunrise alignment and it would not surprise me if there are more solar or lunar alignments going on there. Regarding Achnabreck, yes I have been. There are Kilmartin videos in the Argyle & Bute section on my channel. I am also aware of very similar carvings in other countries.
