My Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.9L engine had an over heating issue which I was able to narrow down to the thermostat. This video is part 1 of 2 videos that shows the procedure on how to remove and replace the thermostat. Thanks for watching.

Got to the end step of this video, and also thought I would have to remove the Alt, and other housings. But the trick is to rotate the entire housing about 180 degrees and pull upwards. If you do anything other than that, it will just NOT come out and will otherwise drive you nuts !

Have done this job a few times.Letting the alternator swing back out of the way gives you more room to work with for turning housing and scraping.Remove top alt bolt and loosen bottom one..

Robert huerta ...universal technical institute student....Don't forget to bleed the cooling system all that air can still be trapped in the system wich can cause overheating and many other issues same for all vehicles

I ve got a 99 Ram 5.2L V8 that just started heating up after 15 min. Pulled into work and the gauge climbed close to Red. i shut it down and rolled to park the truck. All fluid levels are good. oil looks clean, no funny smell. Coolant however has the rusty look to it. Hoping its just the thermostat but I'm going to swap out the fuel pump while I'm at it. Crossing my fingers.

There's a few ways you can check to see if you got blown head gasket if you don't have coolant in your oil you can have somebody put rag or whatever in your tailpipe if your exhaust is nice and sealed to see if it blows bubbles back through your radiator with the cap off.

I did everything you did except take the hose off the thermostat housing. I found it to be easier to leave it on.

I have a 99 2500 that I have issues with Trans temp light and o/d lights come on and o/d acts up. But the weird thing is only does it when it's hot outside otherwise when it's warm or cold out it doesn't do it. Trans don't seem like it's overheating. My heat works with no issues.

When I drain radiators I slip on a section of rubber or clear tubing to get fluid in pan , and makes ground pet /kid safe.. other thing I do is use old rubber bathmatts on places to keep from busting knuckles.

i have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.9L and had just put a new radiator in and ran fine. but after a while my engine starts to sputter and the battery gauge drops all the way down to no charge but all the lights and stuff remain to stay on and after a minute of sputtering like its not getting gas then it will just completely shut off on me and after 20 minutes I can start it and drive it and it will do the same thing, also it is throwing antifreeze all over the engine bay cant find a leak or whole.

Hey! I appreciate the video! Quick question, is draining all the coolant %100 necessary? I literally just dropped $30 in new coolant because the heat ran the system bone dry, and I don't want to pay for more :(

Jesus, that crud in the tstat housing. You can bet that system needs a full flush. And advise never using Dex-cool (orange) in these vehicles. Use the regular coolant (green).

I have a 98 that runs cold. It takes forever to warm up and get to operating temp. Mine doesn't overheat or anything and the weird thing is it has slight heat (my high fan speed only works) if I have it on the lower fan speed then it blows alittle and it has little heat but if you actually turn it on the heat goes cold.

if you still have coolant for over 2 years, it'll turn into a rust color, it'll corrode away the gasket seal for the thermostat

It could be a bad thermostat, low coolant level, or bad ECT sensor or wiring..but since it was ok before you changed the tstat and water pump I would say the thermostat might be bad or the wrong kind, searching online seems like the stock thermostat for these is 195-degrees so make sure you got the same thing in there. Should cover the Throttle Body and make sure you don't drop any fasteners or bolts into the Water Pump. Pain to get them back if you do.
