Күн бұрын

A mysterious bird of increasingly mysterious origins, the dodo bird ruled the roost on its native island of Mauritius-and nowhere else-until meeting an untimely demise. Because in the late 17th century, man brought an abrupt end to the dodo species. Today, Colossal is committed to bringing it back. Rediscover one of the most popular extinct species in the world and learn more about why we’ve chosen the dodo bird to be our next hero of de-extinction.

More important than the dodo is the de-extinction of the Moa species in New Zealand. Some trees require their fruit to pass through a Moa digestive tract for germination. There are trees Centuries old with no way to reproduce!

Have you considered the passenger pigeon for a future project? They went extinct as recently as 1914, surely there must be enough genetic material remaining to sequence, and they were a major component species of their biome before overhunting and habitat fragmentation killed them all off. Given that the dodo was a member of the same order, you might even be able to directly apply lessons learned from the dodo project toward resurrecting the passenger pigeon. Just a thought.

Bro, your head's in the right place. They aren't de-extincting these animals, they're making chimeras. They are editing the fuck out of the extant species' genomes and plugging in a few genes from the target in hopes of expressing traits that might trick the public into thinking it's some sort of hybrid at the very least. The reality is that the genes they will be introducing are guestimations from their comparative analyses between the extant species and the target species - in any case, they will be re-constructing the genes completely artificially using the nucleotide sequences derived from what recovered DNA they have available. Even then, they'll have to force an expression of specific genes to achieve the desired outcomes. The complexity of this task, without living tissues, will most likely lead to some disturbing initial results. This company will attract initial investment from this folly, but they're just going to use this de-extinction endeavor as a proving ground for public support. Their next 'evolutionary' step will be to pivot from these experiments to full-blown human genome editing. The entire plan is laid out in their latest video.

Absolutely love your Company. A few Questions though. - I've heard someone mention once that it doesn't seem to be possible to clone Birds. Were the Problems regarding this solved if it was indeed true? - Are there Plans to clone other Bird Species like the Passenger Pigeon and the Carolina Parakeet if the Plans with the Dodo succeed? (Hope though it will be when and not if. Don't give up🤗) - are there Plans for the cloned Species to be also exhibited in Zoos? This would be definitely a big Help for growing the Population and could prevent them from going extinct again if something should happen in the Wild. Especially useful for Species that don't have much Offspring or need a long Time to mature Would absolutely appreciate it if someone from your Team might find the Time to answer my Questions

We only learn when we push the boundaries and this could be a positive start. I doubt the Dodo will ever roam Mauritius in significant numbers due to human destruction of the ecosystem, but could be a stepping stone. The current project won't develop a true Dodo (that'd require extracting DNA from bones) but might fill a nich. Besides, who wouldn't love to see a Dodo in their local zoo, not to mention maybe being an interesting pet.

Hello! Thanks for your interest and questions. Regarding the dodo DNA, the only viable soft tissue that remains today is a dried head. A large amount of subfossil material has been collected on Mauritius, mostly from the Mare aux Songes swamp. Thanks to our Lead Paleogeneticist, Beth Shapiro, Ph.D., we have secured the full dodo genome from a specimen housed in Copenhagen’s Natural History Museum. Regarding its diet, the dodo is thought to have eaten primarily fruit and used gizzard stones to help digest its food. Inhabiting the woods in drier coastal areas, and having an abundance of food and a lack of predators, it is believed that the dodo lost the need for flight and became well adapted as a flightless, ground-dwelling bird. We encourage you to visit colossal.com/dodo/ for more info about our plans!

Great question - Colossal focuses on reviving species that humans directly made extinct. Within the last 50 years, it is estimated the world's bird population has declined by nearly 3 billion. This work will not only help us restore an iconic animal that we hunted into extinction, but also lay the foundation for unlocking other bird species that would positively impact our threatened environments.

Kauai island would be possibly a great habitat for the lost species of that island, most prominent the Kauai O'O (extinct in 1987). It is a small and manageable habitat and the native people of Hawaii as well as the US government World would surely support the idea.

Noble effort but founded on an unethical premis. People will value nature far more if species when gone are gone for good. First we must learn how not to allow them to become extinct in the first place before we go bringing then back. What are we bringing them back to ? Is it sustainable? What impact will they have on existing species.? What would be the point of bringing back the mammoth, for instance, if we can't even guarantee the future of elephants? Learn to save what we have. If we can do that, then perhaps we can move forward as suggested, but not until.

@lochness5524
@lochness5524 Жыл бұрын
Bringing these animals back is nothing like Jurassic Park. If we could miraculously clone Non-Avian Dinosaurs, that would cause the same amount of problems as Rabbits and Cane Toads did when they were brought into Australia. Non-Avian Dinosaurs evolved in ecosystems that are non-existent today, new environments that aren’t prepared for these animals. If they were brought back and released into the wild, they would well and truly cause detrimental environmental impacts as any other invasive species has done in the past. But bringing back animals that became extinct recently like Mammoths or Dodo’s is different, because they became extinct recently enough that the ecosystem they existed in still exist. So bringing them back into their natural habitat, would be the same as reintroducing a species into new regions where they were wiped previously wiped out, as we’ve already done reintroducing Wolves in Yellowstone National Park, or Giant Tortoises in Mauritius to replace the ones wiped out alongside the Dodo. So when there brought back, they’d just go back into the empty niche they previously filled like nothing happened, and continue interacting with the same animals they shared their habitat with when the became extinct (newly introduced Dodo’s and Tassie Devils might still have trouble with invasive species still present in their native habitats, so that’s gonna have to be an issue they’ll have to sort out later, but it still proves my point that there not gonna cause any humanity ending catastrophes) In summary, brining back Dinosaurs would the same as bringing in an invasive species, but bring back recently extinct species like Mammoths, Dodo’s, or Tasmanian Tigers, is basically reintroducing them to their original habitats.

I really hope that we'll get Animals that are as genetically pure as possible someday. A Hybrid would be a good Start though because you could use those as Surrogate Mothers because they would be even genetically closer to the real Animal, which would hopefully mean way less Complications. Just hope no Hybrids will be released to the Wild, because if there are someday purer Animals, those Hybrids would've already taken over the ecological Niche and would interbreed with the (relatively) pure Specimens)
