Their eyes haven't evolved to be able to react quickly enough. I watched a video on the difference between prey animal eyes vs. Predator eyes like cats and such and it was very interesting.
@EggsDeinony5 ай бұрын
on top of that, their eyes while very good in both dark AND light, have a slow transition period between the two. This is why when horseback riding, avoid early morning or late evening as your horse is largely blind during those times. The headlamps of a car leave a deer literally blind at night @@olplainface1299

Deer typically will bolt in the direction they are facing when startled. The only one that didn't in this clip (other than the sound maker) was the one on the far right, and that's basically because its path was 'blocked' by the tree, so it turned then ran. This is why they all 'scattered'. It's not really a survival strategy.
@obsidianjane44135 ай бұрын
@@dougsholly9323 Kind of is. Scattering can make a predator hesitate on which one to chase. In densely wooded terrain, if they all stay together and run into a barrier in their path, many might go down if they are a pack of wolves etc.

I once saw a show about urbanized wildlife. In one clip two barn swallows had learned how to enter a building by flying back and forth in front of the sensor at the door. They nested up in the corner of a home improvement store. Another story, from Tokyo, showed crows dropping nuts in a crosswalk, to be crushed by cars, and when traffic stopped at the light they'd swoop down and feast.
