Join us as we explore a historic and beautiful section of the East Tennessean mountains. A train track used to go through this trail and now you can hike the tracks through two tunnels and follow the river. This trail is on private property but the owners have graciously opened it to the public. All you have to do is call ahead to make sure the trail is open that day. For more information and for the number to call please check out the Doe River Gorge website: www.doerivergorge.com/

Many years ago, before the camp was there, we hiked in from the top. Had to cross two trestles and go thru two tunnels, suspect those are probable closed off now. Just over the ridge is laurel creek and laurel water fall. actually kayaked down the doe several times, taking out just past the road. What a beautiful place.

The BACKBONE of this whole sight is based on that Railroad. First train thru was July 3rd, 1883. Operated from Johnson City & Elizabethton to the Iron Mines in Cranberry, North Carolina. The last revenue train from Cranberry ran October 16th,1950. Baldwin 10 wheeled Locomotives were motive power. # 12 that ran here, in the gorge runs @ Tweetsie in Blowing Rock, NC. The line still runs to the hanging rock @ Pardee point. The tunnels (2 & 3 are still open on the line. # 5 has collapsed, and # 4 Between the bridge's girder plate & thru truss " Old Rusty") is partially collapsed. The bridge @ Blevins is still open to cars.

There is a lot of history preserved in those mountains. I know that there is a model train structure of this whole line at ETSU in Johnson City and it is so interesting to see how they used all the tunnels. It was an amazing experience to just walk the tracks for sure.

Yes we had wondered that because there was no one else around other then one worker for the entirety of the hike. We were fortunate enough to not see one though.

Me and a buddy walked it back in June and there were workers that said to keep an eye out for them.. we have an abundance of them in East Tennessee and N Carolina
