High res audio is hot within the audio society. But does it really offer better sound quality on all equipment? Or is it just marketing hype?

I think one of the things people forget most about the hobby of being an audiophile is to keep your musical experiences fresh. Whenever I consider spending more on equipment because I feel bored with something, or my experiences start to feel flat, I take a break for a week or two, and then I try out a new genre or dig into some different material from artists I already enjoy. I also try to listen for recommendations. Some other channels that I follow will mention an album they tested equipment with or favorites. Some give recommendations along with each piece of equipment, so by listening for those recommendations I can delve into what other audiophiles enjoy. I also feel that if you're listening to music you don't like because the recording is good, you should try to find a better recording of things you do enjoy. Certain live albums, for example, can breathe new life into tracks you've only previously heard in studio recordings. I also like compilations of music by an artist, as performed by other artists. (Recently I found out about The Art of McCartney, which is Paul McCartney's music (spanning the Beatles, Wings, solo work, etc) as performed by other artists. The slight change of flavor adds nuance and breaks up the album in a way to cut potential monotony.

Thank you Hans. I just got a SMSL AD18. £98 from eBay. Gonna use it in an AV set up in spare room. The NFC Bluetooth activation was the deal clincher! Class D totally different to my vintage Scandyna receiver in my,'setup1’ 😉. Also going to try the streaming/file based route on the 'setup2' Mac Mini, WD HDD and Schitt Modi to start...

Regarding the influence of equipment appearance on the perception of its quality; Floyd Toole tells of a speaker listening test by audio design engineers. A range of speakers of very different prices were auditioned first when clearly visible and then behind screens. The ratings of visible speakers followed price very closely, the hidden speakers not at all.

Yes it makes a big difference. 384khz and 32 bit during mastering gives me the most professional sound, very close analog on a digital domain. If I had the equipment like a 200 core CPU, I will record my audio on this format. Even after converting the audio to 16bit 44.1, the good sound remains.

Great video. The point about running a music server in a computer that doesn’t have the music is s great one. Every review I’ve seen compared the melco or Innuos to either a NAS Which has the streamer and music on the same computer. I wonder how much difference there is if you’ve set up a Mac mini with the music on an outboard usb HDD for music and streaming music over Ethernet. I have never seen that comparison.

Thank you for this is video and sharing your thoughts. I'm currently blinded by the light. I've been using a Bluesound Node 2i and the digital preouts are tosklink and coaxial digital. Currently using Toslink. Both have folks on the internet calling out its weakness of 192khz limitation, whereas USB does not. But the Node 2i does not have a USB out. I've purchased a digital coaxial to see if there's a different but have been thinking whether a streamer with better output opts will be better.

Why is 192 kHz a limitation? How much music is there for sale at higher sampling rates....
@chihweiteng253
@chihweiteng253 4 жыл бұрын
Its a limitation due to the commercial mumbo jumbo and things people say in the forums. Hence appreciate channels such as yours who tell it as it is. Nevertheless, in your earlier videos you also point to bandwidth limitations of cables. And there lies my concern about cables, some folks say Toslink mainly plays 96khz and other say Toslink may at times go up to 192khz. I thought I'd try digital coaxial to see if there's an improvement. I've also seen your video on improving the digital signal.

Higher sample rate reduces latency in the system. 384 khz will give you minimal latency, doing music for Tv,Film and Video games this is crucial.
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 9 ай бұрын
For music only latency is of no consequence. I don't care if a son starts 50 ms earlier or later. Only when you do TV sound over your stereo, this is important. But in many AV receivers and some TV's you can sync the sound. Video processing takes a lot longer than audio so the audio can easily be delayed.

Great video. You mentioned quality oscillators. I noticed that many Chinese manufacturers are using Accusilicon chips for less jitter but I notice that cheaper Chinese DACs (a few hundred dollayand above) perform equally on the J-Test so then of the jitter performance is the same...would putting and buying more expensive DACs make sense? Thanks

Thanks for the knowledge you share with us . I currently use a MacBook Pro 13 2010 battery powered as source for my Centrence DacPort HD connected via UpTone USPCB and audio quest jitter bug , Jriver 26 music external portable hdd . Sounds good on most tracks but on some busy tracks like (Elastic heart by Sia).. there is a part in the song or it gets busy and the DAC emidiately introduces distortion ,harshness, image suffers etc... after the busy part ends, sound quality gets back to sounding good and enjoyable is this problem known to you ,any advice ?

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 👍🏼 Now here's a question. I am returning to listening to music more seriously, after some 50 years or so. Unfortunately very limited budget. I wanted to be able to play local flac files. Thinking of the Majority Fitzwilliam, as it has a display and optical out, that I might be able to add an external DAC to later on. But can I ? Does optical out stream through ALWAYS, or is the stream reconverted? back to digital ?? I asked Majority but they knew nothing !!!
