fun fact: it changed at 6:26 AM this morning, and the bridge collapsed at 1:28 AM, meaning that the person updated it in only 4 hours and 58 minutes after the collapse. That's fast. (btw the time of collapse is gone now, information successfully saved) (also TYSM for 50 likes that is 5x more than I have ever gotten)

A solution would be to show planned or under-construction roads as dashed roads instead of fully-coloured ones

Anything actually constructed would be useful. Or even the staging areas of the construction site. I'd hate to be sailing along and hitting a piling for the new bridge.

Openstreetmap already updated the Baltimore bridge on their map. Now it shows the line being broken, and using the information function shows "collision with a container ship in 2024"

Brilliant. The bridge is (was) right down the road from me although I rarely ever use(d) it. The reality of this is still so unreal for us here. It is going to mess up the commute for hundreds of thousands of people and make it more difficult to interact with the port here.

i like how OpenStreetMap does it it shows that the bridge is broken and what ive seen so far is that it shows both sides/ up to date what the current situation is. not what is should be.

1:35 that’s because you’re starting from a closed location. Set it to traffic view (layer) so you can see closed roads.

i prefer openstreetmap's approach: the part of the bridge that is underwater is not on the map, but the entire area that is closed off is marked as such.

i feel like it should stay on google maps just like it is, with the extra little warning thingy, for as long as it's unsure whether the bridge will be rebuilt or not (unless that slipped by me and is already decided) if they decide it will not be rebuilt, then it can vanish because its no longer intercepted (by it being collapsed), it is now gone

Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit, MI, and Windsor, ON is a little more than halfway complete. It doesn't show in the map view, but you can search for it, and it drops a pin in the middle of the Detroit River but no bridge. It does show a photo the incomplete bridge on the left side of the page

I was thinking of this example. I went to go see the progress so I needed to search it up. There's a boat launch right beside Fort Wayne which has a great view. There's still a small gap in the middle, but even when it's connected, it will take about 6 months to do signage, road work, etc. so we'll see when it shows up especially with the new ramps around it.

I mean, things end up on Google before they're built all the time. There's an estate being built next to me which is very much not existing yet. I think what they've done is just about perfect, maybe keep the structure but remove the actual road nodes

The Florida DOT has a system set up where they can notify Google about road closures in real time. This is mostly used for tropical storms and hurricanes.

I know of another low-key much smaller bridge that collapsed recently and I don't think anyone at Google noticed, there's not even a warning or anything like with the Baltimore Bridge.

FYI toycat -- when we say spur road names out loud, we say like "Six Ninety-Five" rather than "Six Nine Five" or "Six Hundred Ninety Five." Preserves the idea that it's a highway connected to I-95 :)

It's not just spur roads but any three digit highway. For instance, US Hwy 281 runs all the way from Canada to Mexico and we say it two-eighty-one.

It won't take a weekend to rebuild that bridge. Delete it from the map. Add the new one when it's built. Problem solved

I think if the bridge stays gone for a while, say several months with no work on replacement, then Google should take the bridge off the map. It could be represented with a dashed line in the meantime. In any case, it's not going to be updated in just a couple days or a week; the red bubble notification is distinctly a short-term measure

Is Google Maps showing the bridge, or the route of the highway? The route of the highway doesn't change because of the temporary closure of a portion of it. I think Google Maps handled this exactly the right way. I appreciate the varied points of view presented here, nonetheless.

Bridge collapse is a bigger deal than a temporary closure. Imo the path should be "unroutable". We can't effectively plan for the bridge's reopening.

7:40 To answer that question, I can turn to a recently opened highway in Utah, State Route 177, or the West Davis Connector. It did not exist on Google Maps until it opened. I knew the highway was there and being marked a couple weeks prior, but couldn't find it anywhere except for connecting the dots on satellite imagery until it opened.

I don't really get your point. What's the difference between a bridge and a road on Google maps? Accordingly, what's the difference between a collapsed bridge and a road block or a road under construction? Maps always marks blocked ways and never completely deletes them as long as it can be assumed they'll reopen it any soon.

7:26 Nono, we can’t stray away from the FHWA That highway connecting an auxiliary route of i95 (i695) to a major instate (i95) would have to have a three number designation ending in 95 and starting with an even number But since Maryland already has all of the even versions of I x95, may I suggest the nation’s first i1095 Or i guess it could be a state route because it’s really nose goes with naming them

Even stranger: When you try to zoom in on the 95 and 895 bridges, they disappear. 10:50 a.m., 3/38/2024. Edit: Okay, they're not bridges, they're tunnels. I still would have expected Googlemaps to have some kind of dashes indicating so and running across the harbor.

out in seattle, there was an issue for 2 weeks to a month once the alaskan way bridge shut down but before it was destroyed. it was still standing, despite having a tunnel underneath, and business vehicles could still drive over it if they had to, but it was generally shut down. I believe google showed the bridge existing, but directed all drivers through the tunnel and created a second layer on the map when navigating through the tunnel. once deconstruction started, the alaskan way bridge disappeared from maps

@@nickfielding5685 All sides (Ukraine, Russia, DPR, LPR) broke both Minsk and Minsk II; while as evidenced with Sweden and Finland, membership applications for NATO are only approved with the unanimous support of all existing members (never mind that at the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia agreed that all former SSRs were free to make their own security arrangements, including joining multinational agreements), while from 2013-14 with the signing of the EU Association Agreement, Ukraine saw a better economic future if it allied with the European trade bloc than with the Russian trade bloc. Should it have permanently crippled its future by not joining any non-Russian international economic or security agreements just to appease Russia, or even ignore the wishes of at least half the population by permanently allying itself with Russia?
