The theory I’ve seen is that Imu, the king of the world who sits on the empty throne, and is connected to everything. The explanation behind the gap century, the 3 great weapons, and yes, even the no swimming for devil fruit users. The idea is that he is the one with the umi umi(sea sea) fruit, and umi is his name, Imu, backwards, and that he restricts devil fruit users from the sea with his power so that he can shackle down as many devil fruit users as possible. However, one of the leaders against Imu, was Nika, being the sun god, leader of freedom, he isnt able to be reached by mere oceans. Another theory about imu, is that the ope ope no mi’s immortality operation was used on him, which is why he is still alive since the void century, and why the world government has such a high bounty on it, because they are well aware of the power it holds.

Perhaps that's what the One Piece truly is. A Devil Fruit allowing the user to control the sea at will. One that could remove the effect of that Devil Fruit users can't swim anymore, while also allowing that user to be unstoppable when just near water, aka literally everywhere

Since we found out about a Nika fruit I've leaned more towards it being a mythical ocean God fruit rather than a straight up logia, if Imu has it for example then it would be a nice parallel to Luffy's fruit and would tie in nicely with the rain God and Sun God we heard about in Skypeaia.

If there was a water devil fruit it prob a paramecia that controls water that was already touched or the user can use the water in their body as a tool. A water logia only makes sense if the user's own water doesn't affect them but regular ocean water or any liquid body still affects them

The sea chooses someone it deems worthy to eat the devil fruit of water. In doing so, they effectively become the sea's warrior to combat those that have eaten the other devil fruits and those that have harmed it. Because they are the sea's warrior, they shouldn't have the same effect underwater as most of the devil fruit users, but maybe their power weakens the father inland the user goes because the user looses their connection to the sea. I think it should be a logia due to it being a natural element, in anime terms, rather than just being a water bending paramecia. This could be a great end game boss. Don't you think?

I thought of this exact theory and wanted them to make a background for how devil fruits came to, like: Years ago there was a girl named Yoko who loved the sea very much, she was a fish man and was known throughout Fishman Island. One day the sea gave her a blessing the power to control water effectively giving her the title "the first child of the sea". She was ecstatic and used it all the time to help the ones around her. But soon after she realized that she was essentially all-powerful and those thoughts corrupted the once sweet little girl. She began using her powers for her own selfish goal, to conquer the world, just her presence was enough to make people faint just from fear, she was on her way to obtain the world when the sea that gave her that power stopped her and cursed her; the curse was that she would never survive in the sea or any still water, she will immediately start drowning and become weaker than the anyone else unless she gets out of it. The girl looked at it with scorn and stated her WILL was the key, that it will be passed on and generations after her will have the same ideal. Just before she was defeated she said how her powers were given to her is the same way others will attain power, through hoping and people's desires others will attain powers just like hers and the sea will not be able to do anything but watch. The sea, using its energy, sealed her powers and the curse given to her in a fruit-like state and said even if others attained powers like hers, they will still have the same curse she did. Yokos fall marked the start of a new era, the Era of dreams, year 1.

Having a water fruit would not negate the no swimming. Large bodies of water would still render them inert. So while they can surround themselves with water they would have to be extra careful not to get caught in their own attack. It would be a weakness in combat but still respect the rules of the fruit. Still initially overpowered but a haki user would still be a challenge.

There should be a wind/air devil fruit that allows the user to control the flow of wind and when awakened it will allow the user to take air out of somebody's body and. Control the flow of air in multiple directions, allowing them to basically have the force and be able to fly and add its strongest point. It can even make the ocean into a giant war. Or make breathing bubbles underwater.

A permanent change to the ocean from a devil fruit would make sense but the user would have to be very powerful like how aikanu and aokiji permanently changed an islands climate

I think yes. I tried thinking about it, I feel like Emu has a devil fruit that just controls if other devil fruit users can swim or not. Maybe that's why the fruits are called "devil fruits", he doesn't want people to consume those fruits because then people might have the potential to do something against him. My theory is that the "devil" in devil fruits goes from water body to water body. Fruits are mostly water, people are mostly water, and in a large body of water your power is drained. If there's a water water fruit, it would make sense if the sea itself were inhabited by that fruit.

If a water water fruit existed i think a good compromise for oda would be to only allow you to control freshwater. It would be in line with the curse of the sea because that is than all saltwater. If its a captain perhaps they have barrels of freshwater just on hand/can emit freshwater by themselves but once it touches the sea it becomes saltwater and unusable

I cam up with the Wave Wave fruit a Paramecia-type basically makes you a water bender. My logic behind it was me thinking about how Oven has the Heat Heat Fruit and Sabo has the Flame Flame fruit, two Devil Fruits that are similar but are different categories but do almost the same thing. So have the Wave Wave fruit be a Paramecia-type and be different then a water Logia-Type

I actually think Blackbeards dark dark fruit is a water logia. Its really name is the abyss abyss fruit. The user can create, control, and become an abyss of water. The user however can not really become water instead they can more "coat" themselves in it. His move when he just absorbs everything is just the endless dark sea. When he touches a DF user the small "coating" nullifies the DF. the gravity pull thing I can't explain but I geuss it's just like a current or something idk. Basically I think we have seen hints of water fruits like Aokiji being strong and dense, Monet being soft and quite weak and the fluid would be weaker, but since everyone is immune maybe its strong. Though, there should be some kind of Mist Mist fruit with that logic and therefore I believe YES. There are MULTIPLE water devil fruits, BUT the WATER fruit is either quite weak, OR VERY OP. Could even be the one who put the entire One Piece planet submerged in water. And in some way there could be a chance that the person was a fishman, and maybe fishman karate is the way the fruit is used and therefore because it's the primary fruit that water can't be ruined by water, they don't drown and the fruit is actually just inherited by actual inherited skill. The idea was that the user could transform it into a "demonic" water (so called because the "devil fruits". its properties are exactly the same as classic water. like many Pharmacia it made him insensitive to most of the attacks, but they could be hurt by regular water, so hitting a drop of water was similar to hitting a rock, so making it evaporate or freeze was just as effective
