Does an Ultralight Airplane need a parachute?

Some people have argued that an ultralight airplane does not need a parachute. Let's explore that idea.

Remember this too....if you've built an ultralight and it sits a little heavy. You get an additional 25lbs of allowance by adding a parachute. Get a 15lbs parachute and this gives you 10lbs allowance for other things

you do NOT get an ALLOWANCE, they will FORGIVE up to so many pounds for the PARACHUTE, the only weight is the ACTUAL WEIGHT of the PARACHUTE. IF they allow UP TO 24 lbs for a chute, and yours weighs 16 lbs, then THATS ALL you get, there is no FREE EXTRA 8 lbs. This is a MYTH and there is an FAA memo that CLEARS THIS UP, same with FLOATS, you are exempted UP TO a certain weight in pounds, but if the floats weigh LESS you do not get those extra pounds to USE.

I feel like a parachute could be pretty useful in the case that you get hit by a large bird, or - god forbid - another aircraft.

When you talk about maintenance these 2 stroke engines can fail very easy and also you may have a new engine but there could be a flaw with the metal use in the engine and it fails . I have seen ultralight aircraft were the wing brackets had big scratches in the corners I fixed it and the brackets that hold the rudder peddles on had 3/16 pop rivets in 1/4 holes and it was loose had to fix that and a few other things . Been an engineer if you have to do maintenance have a full check list record the maintenance and always every few month contact the manafacture or some that has the same plane and ask of any problems they have come across . And the way I see it I’m going to build an ultralight and I’m putting a parachute so there is the protection should something go wrong

Good skills and good decision-making don't account for every possible scenario. Sometimes the fault lies with someone else, or a midair collision, a bird strike, 1 in a million failure, etc. You don't Need a parachute, but if you can afford one, why not? The argument made by that poster wasn't good nor accurate. It failed to account for a lot of obvious and common failure modes.
