Professor Skye's Record Review

It took at two listens, but I learned love this album and its challenging multiplicity. Watch as I figure out what makes this music so good and so enjoyable.
Skye's Stamp (Best song) La Chiqui- • La Chíqui
Throughout the video I ask for some input from the community so please feel free to leave a comment. Also, it is quite possible that I misspoke/misunderstood when speaking on issues of gender identity and presentation in general and pertaining to Arca in specific. Please leave a comment if you think I was off base on that as well. I spend a lot of time thinking about these issues, but my ignorance remains profound!

I think her most recent mixtape, "@@@@@" is easily her best project. It's off putting to a lot of people because it's presented as an hour long single, but every single minute is captivating and it has some of the best sound design I've ever heard. Definitely check it out I'd love to hear what you think about it

Also just some backstory on Arca and Björk. Björk was a huge influence on Arca when she was growing up. Arca actually did some production on björks 2 recent albums, almost entirely coproducing the most recent one Utopia. Björks take on melody and songwriting combines SOOO well with Arca’s production and sound design it’s a match made in heaven in my opinion. I’d agree that afterwards is a weaker track though, would have loved to hear them actually duet a little.

For context: I am Venezuelan. I've been hearing about arca for close to a decade now. For context, I grew up (forcibly) listening to my mom blasting electronic music all the time, and I ended up being an electronic music snob, basically. And I just can't even get into Arca. I've given her four chances now, with four different albums, but recently I feel like I've figured it out: Arca is to music what high fashion is to clothing. Pushes the envelope, is avant garde, is artistic, and so on. Arca is a sound designer, and her albums are an exhibition.

That's a good way to explain it! But dont forget some people enjoy exploring exhibitions. Some people also have slight adhd so to have something that entertains that (craft-fully so) is very nice. I grew up listening to heavy and fast music. I've found however I don't like most of it. A lot of it is either boring or not creative. So... The few bands I DO like I love. Overstimulation sucks as well.. but the right balance is thoroughly enjoyed. I haven't explored WHY I love a select number of arca tracks but I figure it's the same reason heh. Hopefully that's some appreciate-able food for thought. Because I totes appreciate your input and exhibition talk. Good mind!!:)

Actually this is the best explanation for what Arca is, because I too can enjoy the sonic experimentation (I can be into weird stuff), but overall the album Songwriting wise is not that great imo. I do enjoy the first 3 tracks, and a couple of other, I think the next 2 are the ones I enjoy as well, but after that, right till the end, Im just Not into the tracks, especially none of the featured ones, except for the Shygirl one, which was decent.

Responding to 18:10. You may want to listen to ‘Vulnicura’, an album by Björk produced by herself and Arca. It’s actually accessible, comparing to this one, and you should “get” avant-garde Björk a lot more.

This is her "pop" album actually :v My fav Arca album is Xen but her self titled is her most celebrated one and yeah i dance to Mequetrefe and KLK xD It's great to see people from all ages and sexual orientations reacting to her work and trying to understand her vision // And a way to reconnect with Björk is with "Vulnicura", the album she made after her divorce with artist Matthew Barney, was coproduced by Björk herself and Arca and it's not that avant garde. It's a really personal and heartbreaking album, yes the melodies are not as "pop" as her first years but it's a great moment in her career and one of the best break up albums recently.

Pertaining to your future Arca listening.. Her self titled album is probably her best in my opinion, the first where she utilizes her voice. Her first 2 albums Xen and Mutant sit more in the ambient/IDM genres. They’re both great albums which paint soundscapes of alien worlds with this feeling of almost body horror. Totally different listens than kick i though her trademark sound definitely still makes its way through on this release

Prof Skye: You are a brave man for reviewing such a challenging album. You made yourself vulnerable and (as a result) also an authority on how a lay person experiences an album like kick i, which is interesting to me as a person deeply emerged in edm, reggaeton, and artpop experimental music. To answer your question, YES! People exist who enjoy listening to this (beyond mere appreciation). I find nearly every track empowering and searching for either the divine or the depraved. Also, the way the music is at once wholly original but also has clear references to pop ideas feels fresh and familiar. I play it at home or while i'm driving and feel invincible.

I added a couple of Arcas songs (KLK and Mequetrefe) to a group playlist during a road trip, and all the 40 year olds in the car just kept roasting it and insulting my "taste" in music. They skipped my tracks to play their music instead. Liking Arcas music, and similar artists, can feel extremely isolating, especially if you're the only one in your group of friends that enjoy it. It makes me happy seeing you review this album with the willingness to understand it beyond the "noise".

great review! i really enjoy all of Arcas music because it gives me a lot of inspiration for my own instrumentals since i am a producer. it is very innovative, and when listening to it, the songs somehow capture true human emotions. real feelings and emotions arnt all perfectly in pitch, perfectly on beat, in reality they are very messy and all over the place and the music captures that very well.

I came across Arca because she was one of the producers in FKA twigs' LP1 and that album was ahead of time! I just listened to KiCk i for the first time minutes ago and I cried because of how beautiful everything was made. It was coherently electronic and an expression of abstract emotions converted into sound. Love this review from someone who doesn't listen to these types of art. Thank you!

Arca designs sounds(noises), make experimental rave music, beautiful songs about many live issues, and does weird things as well, yes. Her public listen to it because we understand her vibes/message. It is simple. And I strongly believe that it is not just because it is cool/trending now or something. Among my favourite love songs, many of them are by Arca (...) What I think I mean, it is there was no need, in my opinion, to that question BUT yes, there are people who not only admire, but also enjoy, (+understand) her art/music. :)

Just a little bit of info: the main genre that this album is considered is "Deconstructed Club" which you were approaching after noting how deconstructed the music felt right after discussing genre haha. The first video i saw from you was Callahan's Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest review, so now i feel like i have to point out, in case it's passed you by, that he's got a new single out and his next album in September. Arca also worked on FKA Twigs LP1 and Kelela's debut album. I can't seem to remember the title which is frustrating me and my home girls.

You should listen to Xen and selftitled by her. Arca also produced the last 2 bjork albums. Vulnicura and Utopia. you should really cheak that out! :)

Time is such a nostalgic banger it’s become my 2nd most listened song of all time and in such a short period of time. My # 1 song is Faceshopping by SOPHIE of which you should definitely take a listen and make a review.

I put the album named after the artist's name on when I feel or want to feel doom. And it's enjoyable (perhaps soothing's the better word?).
