Ben carson needs to look up definition of SLAVEs and SLAVERY. "Slavery is, in the strictest sense of the term, any system in which principles of property law are applied to people, allowing individuals to own, buy and sell other individuals, as a de jure form of property. A slave is unable to withdraw unilaterally from such an arrangement and works without remuneration."

BUT if u listen to the whole speech.. he implied they were "immigrants " who came to america for OPPORTUNITIES. that they WORKED FOR MUCH LESS and they had hopes of PROSPERITY FOR THEIR KIDS. and thats wr the definition of slavery comes in. slaves dont work for less. they work for NOTHING. their dreams get squashed beneath their master's shoes and the only opportunity they sought was FREEDOM (which had the same chanes as landing on moon). thats wr nova is ryt in calling him the SECRETARY OF BLACKS coz his role is to make republicans seem empathetic to blacks. HE HAD TO say something in favour of blacks while UNDER PLAYING the suffering part. truth is ... america belongs to the blacks too coz they wr plucked out of their homes and made to work tirelessly for the benefit of others. now u cant disrespect their rights over US. infact the whole color based term should be abolished. so thats the point here - if one is unwilling to acknowledge the ugly truth hidden inthe past... how will fix the consequences its lead to!

So the thing about uncle tom is that he was the lead character in an anti-slavery book that did some significant work as a touchstone motivating white anti-slavery sentiment. The character winds up being beaten to death by the slaveowner for refusing to give up the whereabouts of two escaped slaves.

At school it was once referred to as 'forced migration' which has a different meaning to 'involuntary immigration". The latter term is contradictory because I believe 'immigration' generally refers to coming to a country with intent.

I watched the film 'Imperium' last night, starring Daniel Radcliffe. It was about white supremacists in the US. I was riveted to this film, it being so on the mark with regard to the acts of terrorism undertaken by Whites in the US in recent weeks. It was both disturbing and informative. Has anyone else seen this film and what did you think of it.

A Utah company right now publishes a history school book which is being used across the US in grades 1-6. This company has a representative in N. Virginia. The book states that Africans did not enter America as slaves but as 'immigrants'. An elementary book on how to rewrite history. Maybe Ben Carson is the front man?

The point isn't so much whether slaves are immigrants, that's ultimately kinda semantics, it's whether slaves came to the US with 'hopes and dreams of a better life', as most other new-comers to the US did (although the reasons people have for emigrating varied a lot). Carson makes it sound like slaves ought to have been grateful or something...

Just wanted to point out, in Europe a lot of people travelling from Africa and Eastern Europe are hoping to reach the UK but are now being forced to remain in France or are being dispatched to other regions by force; yet these people are still classed as immigrants. Due to different historical interpretations, different definitions are taken for immigrant. Therefore slaves, on one hand, could be considered immigrants depending on the cultural viewpoint of the individual using that word. However this would still be a grey area. The point here is that immigrant can mean people who are forced into a country for horrific crimes, so maybe Carson and Obama were't entirely in the wrong. However I have not heard these comments in full context so I could be wrong!

I hate to defend Mr Carson but an immigrant is any person that moves to another country to live, it makes no distinction between migration which is compelled (against the persons will Eg. slaves) and that which is not compelled.
