Is Duolingo effective? Is Duolingo a waste of time when trying to learn a language? Can you ACTUALLY learn a language with Duolingo, or is the Duolingo owl just a big bully?? In this video I review Duolingo to break down what’s good about it (which is why Duolingo is so popular), where it falls short as a language learning app, and who should (or shouldn’t!) use Duolingo so you can decide if it's worth your time. Hint: just because it's FREE doesn't mean it's best for YOU.
In this video I focus on reviewing Duolingo and talking about learning a language with an app, but on this channel I cover all things language learning related! Especially to make learning a language easier, more FUN, and how to get out in the world and actually SPEAK the language! Since, that is the point of learning a language, no??
P.S. If you want to check out Busuu, here’s the link:

I used Busuu to learn a language and now I’m excited to share it with you! I am selective about I recommend and by the time I do, it’s something I’m excited to share with you. "How often do you use the sentence 'The horse is eating the apple?'" Very rarely. However, less rarely I have said 'My sister is eating pizza.' Duolingo teaches the words for pizza and my sister. If you can't figure out how to make that sentence from the information given then Duolingo is not for you.

Duolingo's strength is vocab, but yes it's up to you to put the pieces together in order to make sentences you'd use in daily life

Great video! Duolingo is good practise and a sort of 'filler' while you learn, but it's defo SO useful to use others because learning on Duolingo will not cut it. I remember one of my practise sentences for Norwegian was "The bear is eating me, the wolf is eating him" which I will obviously need everyday because it's just so common yk

I'm glad you liked the video! And I certainly HOPE that your life does NOT involve having to use the phrase "the bear is eating me" hahah 😅
@prettyugly
@prettyugly 2 жыл бұрын
Duolingo is not just teaching you how to say "the bear is eating me" but also how to use a sentence like it to form your own. For example, learning this sentence and many other words, you can use the other words you have learned and replace them with words in the sentence. For example, "the dog is eating me". Or if you learn "the wolf is cooking", just replace wolf with a word like man, or replace the word cooking with sleeping, or both wolf and cooking with woman and running.

While playing with Duolingo's Norwegian course, I stumbled over the sentence "Hvorfor lær vi så mange setninger om ugler og skilpadder?" (Why do we learn so many sentences about owls and turtles?). They probably know, that their sentences are sometimes strange. I think it comes from their attempt to link the vocabulary of one unit with the vocabulary of the unit prior. The first unit with focus on food comes directly after the first unit that is focused on animals.

I checked out when the idea of pairing unusual sentences began. Turns out the Greeks, who were excellent at teaching ways to learn, came up with this approach, so it’s been around for a couple of millennia. Memorization champs use it to this day and so do many students when learning new material. Peace ✌🏼

I think its usefulness is directly related to how it's used. If you just blaze through the lessons, you won't retain what you've learned, and five minutes a day isn't entirely helpful either. I've found that a combination of a few lessons, stories and restoring broken lessons, while repeating everything you hear out loud, will help get the most out the app.

"I give water to my pig" is another Duolingo sentence that I'm sure I'll never use. I have used Duolingo to start learning German (in parallel with an actual class), and am now using it to keep from totally forgetting Italian, which I spent several years learning. I find it OK for reminding me of vocabulary that I thought I had forgotten, but it is getting kind of boring. What I like about learning languages is that you learn something about the culture and the country. Obviously, with Duolingo you get none of that. I tend to think of Duolingo as fancy flashcards.

Duolingo isn’t teaching you sentences to memorize. It’s giving you words and word structures to use in the real world. No, you may not use “The horse is eating apples” in the real world. But you WILL use horse, eating, and apples (even if you’re just ordering horse meat in a French bistro). Duolingo’s competitions make learning fun. That’s a good thing. More than twice I have been up at midnight doing lessons to advance a level or win a competition.

Hi ... good analysis of Duolingo except for one important thing. The fact that it's doesn't really help you with speaking, doesn't make it of zero value. Language acquisition occurs through numerous learning styles. Duolingo addresses a few of them very well, and develops vocabulary, and builds programmed grammar skills, but people know that you're not going to get reading, writing, listening and speaking all with one app. Its deficiencies (Duo's) don't mean that it should be discarded as you seem to suggest. It can very well be combined with other apps that address speaking and listening. Maybe the moral of the story is that you shouldn't rely on just one approach, or app. And that no app can really do it all. Thanks for posting though. I agree Duolingo addicts should broaden their scope of learning.

I’m curious if you’ve been able to try any of the Audio lessons on Duolingo (accessed via the headphone icon). These are only available on an IPhone (not available on Ipad or Android versions of the app) and they are only available for French, Spanish and English. These audio excercises require you to speak responses out loud in a conversational style. And the app judges your answer (unlike the Pimsleur program, which is similar). As far as getting comfortable actually speaking a language, the audio lesson section is much more useful than the basic learning tree. Also I enjoyed your video, thanks for posting

I had been using Duolingo to learn Russian and I never could figure out the difference between мой and моя and which to use until I started listening to a Russian learning podcast, even though you would need that concept to actually understand the language cause those aren't the only words that do that.

It sent me directly to have a conversation with an AI... I don't remember what exactly she ask, but I just mumbled my nationality, and then I left when she asked me more information. 😂

From the times of the ancient Greeks, we’ve known that learning is enhanced when using unlikely objects or ideas with each other. Pairing words in funny or weird or simply unusual ways is therefore beneficial and conducive to learning. After learning new vocabulary, anyone with normal intelligence and common sense can start using the learned vocabulary in sentences that make sense to themselves and others.

There are learning techniques that play with mixing up PARTS of sentences, but Duolingo doesn’t follow that. But, as a game goes it’s better than many things!

In any language learning app, it is what you put into it that matters. I grew up when young with Swahili in East Africa, hence followed a friend who wanted to learn it. I was surprised at its efficacy, with only one first real complaint, which was that one of the speakers was not from that country, though he may have had African features, as his pronunciation was just wrong. I advised Duolingo of this, and of some minor mistakes, Yes, it was a fun game type, but the object is to encourage persons in the beginning, not put them off. . Now, I have been checking out the French version, and found features that could be used to improve the Swahili one, these being the "stories" and the "podcasts" that I personally find GREAT, yet in just the phrase learning, if one listens well "TO THE SOUND" and repeats it many times, it can make all the difference. For most students I advice to write down both the one to translate and the answer, and since these are presented many times in the lessons, they become part of the student. A house is built in stages, and so is a language, When I finish this language, I will either brush up my Arabic or learn Portuguese, since I have many "friends" that speak it on Facebook. It is not the number of days or the points that matter, but what one actually learns and remembers, and also following the "tips" provided by the app.

Hey thanks for sharing! I do actually like the Duolingo stories and hope they continue to expand that aspect in the future in all languages they offer. Definitely agree it's not about day streaks or points, but all about learning the language, and using it with others!

@@BreakOutandSpeak Thank you for your input. I have tried one more aspect that I skipped previously, this being to open the "shattered medals" of those that have been completed previously You have to go back on the "tree", open them and do the "legendary" exercises, as this is a repass, with a few new phrases that help refresh the brain on those that do not live in the environment of the language being learned. Try the podcasts, if you have not yet done. Take care, and thanks again, from a language lover.

Domingo is decent if you are brand new to a language and are just getting your first bits of vocabulary. I used it when first learning German. However, after getting phrases to practice such as, "The bear often surfs in Sweden" and "My cat is always playing chess" I realized it was teaching how to talk like a Schizophrenic. Don’t @ me, but I like Duolingo. (American trying to learn German, on day 296.) But yes, some of the sentences are ridiculous. “The bear and his wife did yoga this morning.” I kid you not. But I do think those sentences are thrown in just to be silly and fun. Another one-my favorite one-is, “I do not love you. I only love mayo.” Again, this is for real. Folks at Duolingo have a twisted sense of humor, and I really appreciate that. :-)

4:29 this point is misleading. your example is vocabulary introduction so, understandably, the 'question' is fairly straightforward. you aren't expected to know the information you're being quizzed on. but as the lesson progresses, the questions (in the form of translating text) gradually intensify. here's my (very green) take: yes, i sometimes find myself anxiously questioning the practicality of what i'm learning, but at least duolingo does a great job of incentivizing that learning. and while i may never utter the sentence "die katze spielt immer sehr gut klavier", i am building a framework for reading and writing in german. my pronunciation and grammar suck and i couldn't hold a conversation to save my life, but i feel duolingo provides a great basis for taking that next step. i can't wait to read harry potter in german or rewatch dark while parsing familiarities, for instance. then maybe i'll befriend a native german speaker and begin strengthening my fluency. and so on and so forth; there are levels to this. i look forward to seeing what busuu has to offer as well.

I believe this video is quite outdated. I get your point but I have started to use Duolingo recently and the conversation aspect of it is quite good. I don’t see any absurd phrases being used anymore and a lot of real conversation ones that are quite useful. I also see you missed mentioning the podcast and stories aspect of the Duolingo app. In short, I think the app is evolving. Yes, it is not ideal. Ideally you would want to constantly have a native speaker for a couple of hours every day but this of course is not possible for everyone.

To expand a bit on her video: Duolingo rarely teaches you the proper grammar, and they don't teach you informal versus formal words at all. (At least not in my experience when I was learning German.) Busuu does all of the above, which is EXTREMELY important with the German language!) It lets you bookmark words you want to remember as well. If you're a premium member, you can make a study plan. That will allow you to pick your desired fluency level, give you an estimated date you'll reach it by, AND show you what percentage of the way you are to your goal. I found all of those features to be very motivating. Also, it only costs $10 more than Duolingo's annual subscription. I don't work for them or anything, but I wanted to help others make an informed decision. Pay it forward and all that jazz. One of the things that first convinced me to give it a try was the fact you CAN be a free member if money is an issue. Other apps I've tried couldn't say the same. Or worse yet, you only got to do about two lessons for free before you had to pay. And I'm sorry, but two lessons is not enough to give me a true feel of whether or not I'll like an app. They DO teach Japanese, but I know for a fact they don't teach a Latin. So if you're learning Latin and looking for a new app, please disregard this PSA.
